Description i'm reluctant to call this a "starfield tutorial" since it can be applicable for just simple stars. This is less a tutorial than it is a general guide for the techniques of making stars. this is the way i do it, slightly adapted from *DKF 's method. Anyway, i hope some people find it useful.

And to think I used to believe all star fields were drawn pixel by pixel.

Again, your tutorials are very well explained and easy to understand. I think I can even do this with my ancient version of PS.

Thank you again, and I hope you do continue to make tutorials; please don't let the opinions of a few elitists ruin what could benefit so many other people.

either do one of the following -

1) try different levels settings
2) continue with the tutorial.... it's like in many tutorials where whilst the middle step looks poor, the end looks good.... just go with the flow

I like this tutorial for all the interesting techniques, but the one thing I don't like its that you generalized it to the programe you use because of how you explained "clt+u" and things like color burn. The programe I have can do most of that stuff, but has difernt keyboard functions and differnt layer options. You should add a more in depth expination as to what your doing so that any progamr can be used without you having to know how to use them.

It's a damn shame we've got foolish children here, wasting time talking shit, instead of praising you for your Tutorial and all the hard work you've put into making it for the DA community.....again....cheers for you work and keep them coming in!

I don't want to rank each tutorial, both alyn and sirgerg has different positive aspects within their tutorials.
Tutorials and feedback are the foundation of a good community - and someone is trying to ruin both factors here.

oy... gotta love the morons.... probably the same kind of morons who insulted one of my trial art peices, because it used a filter to make the planet (which by the way, i used lunal cell, and glitterato, because i wanted to see if i liked the results enough to perfect it, i didnt, i dont like space pictures.)

as for this tutorial, all the people flaming it really need to realize that most everything thats been done in art, is a copy, or reproduction or something else, its all in how its laid out.

I think it's time for some people to take a step back and think about what's going on here... This is an art community. And apparently some people have forgotten that art does not revolve entirely around the unique. Instead, what makes art are the individual ideas and qualities that each artist brings to the table. I see people attacking Alyn here for doing just that, and it's absurd...

How is something like this unacceptable, but the thousands of anime and fanart deviations submitted on a daily basis are perfectly okay? What about the 3D abstract artists? When you get down to it, everything they submit is very similar, the difference is their own style. Taje what Alyn is doing here for what it is, an attempt to help the rest of the community out, and an insight into his own personal style.

I think people like seas need to reasses the situation and decide if this is the hill they want to die onor not...

quite similar to greg martins tutorial, but there some diffrences that can change the results significantly. If I was going to try to make a star feild ofr the first time I would try both methods several times

Remember noise is random so just ctrl+zing back and re noising the work area can help alot if your feild is not working out

Also anyone who copys the tutorial directly and then posts it as his own work should be shot, try experminting around first, the internet is may too full of lifeless and uninteresting starfeilds

I'm sorry, but GregMartin have already done the tutorial I need. It's nothing new you are coming up with. But still a good idéa to make a tutorial. But I think youv'e been a little lazy and I have a good argument for it.
Arg: If you ask the reader if they know how to use the "clone stamp tool", they problably know how to make stars... If not it's good you ask.
If they don't know how to use the "clone stamp tool" they certainly will have problems finding the ways to make monochromatic noise and they will lose interrest because of the too high level.
If your'e going to modify or rewrite your tutorial, then make it more detaily explaining and make some pic to tell where to find the tools and effects.

One great thing, the idea of making random star luminosity with "render clouds" in a overlaying layer, never thinked of that.

internethead In reply to Alakai [2004-05-07 16:32:23 +0000 UTC]

does greg martin use cloud layers set to multiply? greg martin's tutorial is a lot more basic, shows you a pixelated star field and just says now erase it. alyn has gone inot a lot of detail, shown lots of new ideas in this field, and you just need to look at the number of comments to see how many people it's helping. and if he's beign lazy, why is he making a tutorial. if he was lazy he'd be spinning on his leather chair, not making tutorials designed to help you. be grateful or people won't make tutorials.

alyn In reply to Alakai [2004-05-07 15:14:18 +0000 UTC]

who cares if it's not an original subject? there are SEVERAL planet tutorials on the web, not to mention a good few hundred tutorials on how to make random effects that no-one needs. This tutorial IS unique in the way that it gives thorough methods in the technical aspect of starfield creation. As for lazy? that's totally unfounded, it's not lazy since i don't see many other people taking time out of their busy lives to make tutorials. Lazy would be not sharing AT ALL.

also, it's not a clone stamp tutorial, if i wanted to teach people how to use the clone stamp tool, i'd make a tutorial for it, i don't intend on making a tutorial inside a tutorial.

sorry, but i've had a bad day and i don't need to read comments questioning WHY i should make something. I'd rather people took it for granted that i did actually spend time to try and share something with the artist community and appreciate that.
