The first tutorial by alyn
released for my website, except that isn't up yet.... so erm... released here.I emphasise the end note. This tutorial appears here, ~scifisrc , and at my website only, no-where else. If you see it elsewhere, it's a rip, this is the original.
And, please EXPERIMENT around what i've laid out here, change the ctrl+u values, try different blending modes, you might well stumble across something new and BETTER.
as for the example image, a few other effects and techniques went into that to enhance the effects... so don't be restricted by the full stop at the end of point 5.

I had problems too, I had no experience but I did some research and this effect can be easily done with the scattered maple leaves brush used as eraser with the opacity around 35 and the flow around 15. From there just play with ir

I've got a couple of questions though, if that's okay? About the dreaded 1st step:
1. What do you mean by a 100% thickness white brush?
2. Are you using texture on the brush?
3. What mode is the brush set on?
I know you didn't really want to explain the brushing in any detail, but i've yet to find any good brushing tutorials!?! I'm scouring through the archives at the moment lol!

whoa thats an awesome explosion thing though people will have to no how to use brushes pretty good before trying this. nice tut though. ugh for some reson deviantart keeps slowly changing to different shades of green i think im going crazy

Question about #1:
Brush: What opacity? Layers would help, I think... And What's the fuzziness of the brush?
Everything else is pretty basic. The first # needs a bit more explanation.

the tutorial assumes you have a knowledge of brushing, if i were to fully explain how to recreate that shape, i'd need another tutorial.
The tutorial is aimed moreover at the creation of the fire effect, as opposed to the shape.

Great tutorial; I've been wondering how to do that kind of effect... but, like everyone's been saying, the first step is quite intimidating. Still, very useful and well explained. I'm definately going to see how close I can get with PS5.5^^:.

Hmm, i guess you assume that people also have basic brushing skills. Like the guy above me said, making the original explosion would be really hard. You should make a tutorial on that first.

there are already many brushing tutorials available out there already... smudging and using textures to overlay can help to achieve this particular effect, but i probably won't make a new tutorial just to cover this particular aspect since it's been done before.
