Description This tutorial will show you how to add 3ds max's Biped system into your 3d character model. Once completed, you'll be able to animate and pose your character however you like!

If you have any questions or suggestions, please ask below!

Enjoy the tutorial!
NOTE!!! If you can't copy a pose from one side of the biped because the button is greyed out, read THIS!
I made this tutorial in an older version of max (probably 7) that did not require this step.
Above the copy pose button is a yellow "new" button. You must press that first to create a new set of poses in order to copy poses to the set. Doing that step first will let you copy poses on your biped and continue the tutorial as shown.

Is there any other custom made biped like if you were to do a mermaid or like a bird, or would you have to do costum bones for that?

For all who struggle with the ''Attach node'' -> to -> ''Pick object'' pop up, this is what you do. After you click on the little man (''Attach Node'') you directly click on Edit -> Select by -> name -> Bip001 Pelvis, and then you can go on where you left!

I am using 2012 version , I had your same problem an hour ago..the reason is you haven't created a collection yet, so the button won't be available until you create a collection first

Select any bone of your Biped > go to Motion panel > Parameters tap > Copy/Paste > .. then press the button which looks like a small sun .. now you have your collection you can copy/past pose, postures, or tracks;

The tut is great, but why are her highs thicker than the head, and why are the legs in general that muscular while the arms look like wimpy twigs that are about to break?

i noticed you used scale
i though scaling was an animating/rigging no no

when ive done it (with bones and linked objects at least) i get retarded warping
cant you modify pivot point under hierachy tab or something?
im probably completely wrong, im a bit of a rigging noob

bloody fantastic tutorial there, thanks very much for posting this info! I came across this searching for biped tutorials on google, I'll be honest all the other ones I found on other sites are just crap and expected you to know what buttons to press. You're tutorial is not only indepth but straight to the point, well done. Because of this I have fully rigged a character I made in 3DSMax for my uni project using your tutorial in just under an hour with very limited prior experience. Thanks alot!

One thing I like to point out is your tutorial didn't mention about changing the number of fingers to 5 (Default in Max was 1). not too much of a biggie though

One of the most helpful tutorials I've seen, thank you!

I'm a noob to animating so I used your tutorial and then exported in .fbx and uploaded to www.Mixamo.com. I found it on gamasutra...The site retargets animation automatically (which is great because I haven't learned that part yet!). So I'm learning keyframing quick and dirty by playing with their animation but I would imagine it could be useful for the rest of you guys too (noob or not).

I don't get a pick object pop up in my max, so I'm stuck.

So what can I do now?
I selected the skin, physique and the attach button, but nothing happens

Sweet. Best, or is that ONLY, tutorial I've found that uses the built-in biped and works for beginners. Thanks a lot, got my character rigged a bit too!

With this I should able pose the character in any way, without editing the envelope again, is it?

Anyway, I never use weight before. nut with this I might try one.
