Description
I've had an armor piece brewing in the back of my mind for some time now. I love the great German tanks from WWII but they are very well represented. I decided to go with the Sherman for this piece. These are late war versions. The M4A3E8 with the HVSS suspension and the 76mm gun.I added a couple of Mustangs making a low pass. The combination of air power and armor was unstoppable in 1945. Hence the title, "Forces of Liberty".
I painted the overall piece at 20" x 24" to allowfor various aspect ratios when printing. This version is 16" x 24"

Love it ... been playing a WW2 game heaps lately. Any idea how a 17-pounder rates against the up gunned Sherman?

Not sure. They are both about 76mm. I guess it depends on the barrel length, muzzle velocity and ammunition used. I don't have the stats at hand for comparison but I'm sure they must be out there.

Yeah, both were designed to be high velocity armour penetrators. I'm gonna go and look I think. Would be interesting to see which Sherman would've won in a head to head. Were the later model US Shermans up-armoured?

I beleive they were. I know they did add wet jackets around the ammo stowage as well.

Yeah, I looked it up. An extra 4 inches of armour on the Sherman Jumbo's. Thats a large amount of armour for a WW2 tank! Of course, a lot of that was on the front though, to give them the ability to survive hits from Tigers and the like.

What's even more interesting is what the Israeli's did with them once they got their hands on 'em. As the Super Sherman it became a truly bad-ass tank.
Allot of those ended up in South America, I believe they went to Chile. There they were modified even more being fitted with super high velocity guns.

Yeah, but after my experience in games, I'm not so sure I trust low calibre high velocity guns. Sure, they punch through the armour but they don't do enough damage behind. Pretty grizzly subject but a bigger shell means more of the crew die and there is a big difference between the Chilean 60mm high velocity shells and say a 105mm howitzer, which was also mounted on a Sherman.
But yeah, the Super Shermans are pretty damn interesting. I am going to try and dig up some first hand accounts of those things facing up against Egyptian tanks, preferably of the WW2 vintage. No doubt the Super Sherman out performed them but by how much? How capable was the platform???

Another Sexty picture!, and i may be wrong but, these shermans are not the regular, 76 Pounder variants, but the 76.2 MM Anti-Tiger versions right?

Thanks. I believe it was a 76.2 mm gun which was used.

Great piece of work that you have no doubt put a substantial amount of effort in. I did actually think this image was a combination of photos and digital painting. Is it all just painted?

Damn awesome. Like Patton said it, keep up the whackin', son.
How about a british customised "firefly" next? With the 17 pounder Tiger killer.

Thanks. Yeah, the Fireflies are cool. I'll probably switch up a bit on the next one since I just did the Sherman. I don't like to get too burnt out on one subject.

So that would mean an M series 46, 47, 48 or 60 Patton then?

I like the Shermans which I have depicted but I also like many more. The German Tigers and Panthers come to mind. For modern armor I like the M1A2 Abrams, the Challenger II and the Leopard 2A6.

Thank you. I haven't done the Tiger yet but I want to. The Tiger is my favorite of the German tanks from WWII. I like the Panther and the Panzer IV too.

NICE! I love the armor from WWII, especially the Sherman. I find it ironic that they put the "tank-buster" artillery on those very same vehicles.

Thanks! I love the armor from WWII also. A painting featuring the M10 or M36 would be cool. I'm hoping to get to some of the tank destroyers before my enthusiasm wanes. I also want to do some of the awesome German tanks. Some Tigers or Panthers maybe.

Aye. I'd like to see some art with the old artillery and whatnot. Maybe something with the old A-bomb cannon.

I am in awe of how well you paint. This looks so realistic, Mark. You are a true painter talent. Reminds me of the program my father use to watch, 'The Valiant Years'.
May the New Year bring you and yours much love, health and many joys, mark.

Most of the Soviet WW2 military fans never admit that, but "Easy Eight" was fully comparable with T-34/85.
