Description Due to upcoming "Superman - Man of Steel" reboot i thought i draw my own take on Superman's costume. As much as i understand how Superman's classic look is iconic, it really has to go, let's face the fact's...red underwear over blue tight's is just far to silly, i really liked the origin of it in Superman-Birthright, where he based it's design on some Kryptonian warrior's uniform...but he ended up with the regular Superman costume and that kinda ended-up being silly as well.

As for the movie, i would like the costume to be similiar to the red n blue classic wear, but make it more "alien" lookin, maybe even make it something Jor-El left for him in the fortress of solitude idk....Just dont make it Christopher Reeves/Brandon Routh "fabulous" skin-tight uniform.

was never too much into Superman, but this uniform design for him is kickbutt 8'D i also dont like the red undies portion too much, but i understand why it's been that way for over...what, 60 years? (lul, dont quote me on that).

T T
This is beautiful.
It lightly reminds me of the spaceman outfits from the '50's, but it's not cheesy,
I think I love his lack of undies on the outside the most, his cape attaching to the logo is a close second.
(the gold line moving down from the 'S' is excellent as well.)

I hope we can see your take on Lex Luthor next. Normally all we see of that guy is Mad Scientist or Business man.

My favorite part of looking at this is the shading for the dark blue leather.

To quote JewWario, "I like it." Though it looks like the cape and the mid-section are connected, which makes it seem like it'd be difficult to take on/off. But VERY awesome none the less.

Hi!

I agree with the others in that it looks heavy with details that Superman shouldn't be bothered with. Clark Kent/Kal El is a very humble guy who does things rather straightfoward and simple. I know that he comes from an alien planet which is far advanced than Earth and that his dad was a scientist but his costume should never look too bad ass or heavy simply because that's not who he is as a hero.

Have you seen Jlustice League Unlimited, more specifically Justice Lords Superman. Maybe that will help you with your redesign goal. Here take a look at some of these pics:[link] [link] [link]
Just replace the black field with the blue since he was a dark version of Superman from an alternate earth here. Hope this helps.

Judging by this and the Spider-man redesign, you seem to like making shoulder pad/poncho type looks for heroes. Spider-man had the look of his mask connection all the way down to his mid-chest and forearms while Superman has his cape going into his logo. Kind of looks similar to me.

Nice look, it is new and different, however his expression is a little stern even for Superman.
The reason that Sup’s always ends up in his traditional red undies-blue tights uniform is that it is classic / an icon and most people know that suit. If you were to remove the colors and the S symbol it would still be identified as Superman.

Plus the fact that Superman - Kal-El is bullet proof, one of the strongest heroes in the world of comics, and has long list of super-powers; he really does not need a bulky suit / armor.

Overall, great new luck and redesign on the old suit.

Finally - I hope the reboot move is good. The last move was okay, but with Batman and Iron-man and Spiderman movies really hitting high marks, the bar is really high, people want to see something that is more than a comicbook transfered into a movie.

My personal problem with it is that form has GOT to follow function. It's implied by the metallic looking coloring that the golden parts are metal armor. Therefore, the placement of some of them (particularly on the side of his torso and the leg) would make movement difficult. Especially the one that's on RIGHT where the leg bends (like when sitting down). The belt also is a tad big and because of the metal pieces, it would also be odd sitting down or generally bending. Same with the gloves. Even though you separated the metal pieces from his arms to his hands, I've work similar gloves to those before (but with plastic and a different design but same concept) and it is VERY difficult to move your wrists around. Those particular types of capes where they cover the shoulders completely and connect with the S on the chest can also be cumbersome and in the way when trying to raise his arms and such.

The artwork is lovely, I have no comments on that. When it comes to costumes, however, they have to be simplistic enough where movement is easy and things aren't getting in the way. This is why a lot of characters wear skin tight things to begin with because nothing is going to flap in your face while you're fighting bad guys lol. Remember, form MUST follow function.

Well, the idea was to make it "mettalic" but not exactly metal, so it's somewhat flexible, and even if it was real metal, I think Superman is one character that actually CAN bend it without any problem .

But then it'd get stuck that way and he'd have to bend it back all the time.

For some reason there are so many different interpretations of Batman that work perfectly.
And yet I have never seen a variation on Superman's costume that I really liked. Unless you count Red Son, the uniform and darker costume he wore in that were pretty good.
They say you can't perfect on perfection, so that must mean Superman's costume is perfect right?
It somehow works in the comics, but it would be really silly in reality.

Now to this costume:
It's far more intimidating and believable, I could see this standing next to Nolan's Batman.

Gold instead of yellow is nice.

I like that there's a sense of alien culture in it.

The 'S' symbol incorporated into the cape is not only good from a visual standpoint but makes far more sense in terms of contruction. I never could figure out his cape was attached or removable for that matter.

The stand collar gives an instant sense of military, perhaps inspired by the uniforms of his home world?

The one thing I'm not too sure about is the bodysuit. I like that it's a darker shade of blue but is it supposed to be leathery?
The movie Thor costume is doing that and I don't like it.
It doesn't work for either of them because it's such a motorcycle look. Works for Tron and other sci-fi's but not here.

But if it's just supposed to be a heavy material then it's fine.

sstarkm [2011-03-18 06:39:22 +0000 UTC]

It really misses the whole concept of superman by far. It'd look decent on another superhero, but it really doesn't fit Superman. Superman is simple, and he likes simple. He's not like Batman, he doesn't try to scare his enemies (most of the time), he fights by trying to be as compassionate as possible, which is his real weakness. Giving him an overwhelming look just misses the entire point of the character.

I suggest you look into Tim Gunn's view on Superman costumes, he really is a genius: [link]

I feel that, when designing a costume, one should treat it as if they were making a logo or an icon. Something catchy, but really simple. Batman has the cowl, WW the primary color scheme and the lasso, Green Lantern with a simple green/white/black motif as well as his symbol, Spidey with the blue/red patterns, etc. And as always, I feel context upon the character should be considered, which is why a lot of redesigns usually fail, because artists may have a good superhero design, but it doesn't fit the character they're making. X-characters could tell you all about that.

I will admit though, that this would probably work for something like Zod being his own Superman of sorts. Very "New-Krypton".

MaroBot In reply to sstarkm [2011-03-18 13:06:44 +0000 UTC]

Actually i think i give Superman far more credit than this...you see, i dont think it's the costume what is so iconic, but the character itself...look at Batman, everybody knows him, everybody loves him...yet he had more costume redesigns than any other superhereo...yet people ware still able to point at him and say without a doubt "THAT"S BATMAN !". When redesigning a character's look im trying to give his costume an origin...And with Superman, only way it CAN work is for his costume to be made by him based on something he saw on the recordings of images from krypton, or even something Jor-El left him to wear as the last son of krypton.

You say that Superman doesn't try to scare his enemies...i agree 100%, but he doesnt want to make em piss their pants out of laughter either. With Batman, his costume should be Dark, should be intimidating and even somewhat scary, because that's what this character is all about, but Superman ? his uniform should be something entire DC universe would respect, and as much as his classic look can work in comics/cartoons, it looks really silly in movies, Look at Brandon Routh, he's not a bad Actor to play Superman, but after he put on his blue tight's he looked more like someone who's cosplaying as Superman, and not Superman itself.

sstarkm In reply to MaroBot [2011-03-18 21:02:02 +0000 UTC]

You're correct that the character is more iconic, but their costume is supposed to be as well.

Look, modernizing isn't bad, I usually encourage it, but other artists have done better jobs at it than others. You pointed to Batman having the most renditions, and that's true, but one essential thing they've always kept was the cowl, because that was the iconic part of the costume. Adding fancy things like plates and such doesn't make me notice them as much as the cowl. With Superman, you're correct. He needs a costume change, it is incredibly outdated, but yours doesn't really come off as being that great. That said, I did make a mistake in my last post by NOT telling you what I liked, because there is stuff to love here. The cape combined with the center symbol is a GREAT idea, and the gold plating on the symbol is very original, while keeping on with the iconic feel. The belt I'm not so sure on, but the belt (or at least the area it surrounds) has always been the hardest part of redesigning Superman's costume. I will admit that I like how you gave homage to the underwear by having it point down. I think it just comes off a little thick. I would also suggest perhaps putting spaces in between sections of the belt like - - -. I also like the plating on his collar ONLY if it served as some sort of communication device/translator/whatever.

The things I don't like are gold platings on his glove, pants, and below his chest. They add nothing to the character, and moreso distract. Shiny things don't make a thing better, and too much of it just makes things chaotic. I also have personally never been a fan of having Superman's hands covered. While I incredibly doubt this was the intention of the original artist, I feel that having his hands uncovered adds to Superman's character by showing that he's willing to shake your hand "unguarded". I also think you have a wrong idea about Superman. He doesn't necessarily want respect. It'd be nice, but he doesn't care if people think him silly or not, he just cares about if everyone's okay. Go read All-Star Superman, this would probably give you a fair idea of how he see's himself as well as others.

This all said, I do kinda like your idea of having the costume as something Jor-El left him. I think this suit would make a better alternative suit for special occasions. I'd even be willing to say this would make a good suit for when Supes goes out into Space and such, sort of like what Spidey is doing right now within the new Fantastic Four series and his regular series.

As opposed to Batman, who can even kill God with enough "prep time"?

I love how Superman always gets bashed for having powers suited for big, epic sci-fi adventures, but how (a) Batman gets a free pass for being the biggest Mary Sue going and (b) other characters like Green Lantern and Silver Surfer don't get anywhere near the same grief for their power levels. I guess it's just cool to hate Superman because he's Superman, right?

I don't hate Superman, I just don't like him. You can't tell a good story if the hero has little to no weaknesses. I also dislike Batman for the reason you mentioned.

Conversely, my favorite superhero of all time is Spider-Man and I have a reason for it. All of his problems are explained in detail; he's young, he has issues with his jobs, money, even his love life. He has a ton of vulnerabilities and risks in his life but he doesn't let them get in his way of doing the right thing each time. And unlike Batman, he's not afraid to hide his face when masks don't matter anymore.

When looking at the traditional Superman costume, people think "superhero." What most don't realize is that when it was created that look was meant to imply "alien."
Flash Gordon popularized the image of aliens wearing skin-tight costumes with capes.
