Description I decided to see how much I've improved since I first learned what the word "amigurumi" means and picked up a hook and yarn.

After pondering which of my early work to revamp, I finally decided on the galaxy far far away's resident military genius and buster of Rebel balls, Grand Admiral Thrawn!

I made a series of small changes, which I hope add up. I used better-quality yarn, adjusted the clothing patterns--most noticeably, the trousers--and remade the ysalamir.

"Stands" approximately 13" tall. Materials for Thrawn include Loops and Threads Impeccable in clear blue; Tahki Yarns Cotton Classic in white, black; Plymouth 24K in gold; Cascade Yarns Pima Tencel in midnight; DMC embroidery floss; buttons; FolkArt and Americana acrylic paints. Materials for happy ysalamir include Bernat Satin in goldenrod, pipe cleaners, and safety eyes.

Ultimately, I suppose it's up to the viewer to decide how much I've truly improved, but I think I've improved in three years.

I adore Thrawn and have some more artworks of varying quality in my gallery.

I saw that and as a die-hard SW fan, i'm naturally a fan of the BEST admiral that the Empire has ever seen!

Just his whole name... Mitth'raw'nuruodo. Delicious.

And no, that's not the case; most of my plushies I've sold and the rest I've given away, with a few exceptions, like the above deviation!

The new one looks more muscular! and still so cute! ^^

Oddly enough, I did not change the basic body pattern and only made minor changes to the clothing. However, I did use thinner yarn to make the clothing instead of the worsted-weight yarn I previously used, which is probably why he looks a bit less chubby here.

I wish I could do my Thrawn plush again too

Both are good, but the new one is definitely better, I would say. The small details and thinner yarn work very well in your favour.

The thinner cotton yarn costs a comparatively outrageously high amount for a comparatively outrageously small hank of yarn, so I don't want to use it often

Ah, I see. That must be irritating.

It's fucking mercerized cotton. There's no way it ought to cost $7 per 50 gram hank.

I've traditionally used Caron Simply Soft acrylic which costs $3.50 for a nice 6 ounce skein for clothing, but it is worsted weight and it can make the clothing a bit too bulky, especially layered.

$7 for 50 grams?

And about 108 yards. Which runs out pretty fast.

Still, it is pretty nice, if only I could find a lower-priced DK weight cotton that comes in so many colors...

Perhaps it's because I used a thinner yarn for the clothing. I didn't really change the basic body pattern.

At first glance, I couldn't really see any kind of improvement, but unlike the "draw again" memes you have to actually take a good look. After looking closer, I'm seeing the improvements of the final product; it's all in the little details, such as the ribbons on his chest, and (a little more obvious) his critter. Probably what made it hard for me to see in the first place was that your "before" starts at a high skill level to begin with. Something that can't be noticed from just looking at the images is how long both took. I'm sure the second time around didn't take as long as the first time. Both look really nice, but the extra details on the "after" puts it on a higher level than the "before".

Yes, what I was trying to do was see if I could take a plushie that was already pretty good and tweak a few little things until the changes added up. Version 1.0 took me three days to make, and Version 2.0 took me five, but I actually made 1.0 when I was in the hospital with nothing else to do and 2.0 required a lot less effort since I already had the basic patterns drafted.

seapuppy In reply to MasterPlanner [2013-04-10 01:01:07 +0000 UTC]

Awesome. Did you make version 2.0 from scratch, or did you change the details on version 1.0 leaving the base along?

MasterPlanner In reply to seapuppy [2013-04-10 01:04:58 +0000 UTC]

I made version 2.0 from scratch, if you look at the picture you can clearly see I used two different colors of blue yarn.

Version 1.0: Red Heart Super Saver in light blue
Version 2.0: Loops and Threads Impeccable in clear blue

seapuppy In reply to MasterPlanner [2013-04-11 03:13:40 +0000 UTC]

I wasn't completely sure since the first version looks like it had dimmer lights for the photo than the second version.

Or maybe it was the different backdrop.
