Description "Nightbeat & Co.: In-and-Out, No Problem"
Prints available: 8"x10" and 11"x14"
The Autobot Nightbeat (the one in the middle) is a would-be detective who doesn't always exercise the best judgement in dangerous situations. His partners, Siren and Hosehead , are always there to cover his back - or at least let him know how badly he's screwed up.

Holmes, Watson and...Lestrade?

That third one is hard to peg. Detectives tend to have no need of more than one sidekick. I see Hosehead as the quietest, least imaginative, and possibly most competent of the three. He's the one who does the practical but boring work that needs to be done, while Nightbeat and Siren puzzle stuff out and squabble.

Thanks, Beamer! When I was doing the Energon Galvatron pic, I kept thinking about your old Energon Megatron one. Always liked the composition.

I used to have Hosehead, he was one of my faves even if his bio depicts him as the inept firefighter that saves the wrong people and douses water on buildings not on fire. The other two are interesting characters too.

Ooh, these handsome boys look great! Nightbeat's my personal favorite TF, so I'm always so happy to see him get some fanart love You really got his face so spot-on, the Bogart scowl is to a T. The lineart and coloring is great, and it looks like you've stuck faithfully to their G1 figure designs! Also glad to see the gold visor on Nightbeat, I've always liked it better than the blue one ^_^

Thank you! I wasn't sure exactly how to balance my love for toy-accuracy with Nightbeat and Siren's iconic-yet-wrong comic appearances. In the end, I decided to err on the side of all of them wearing "sunglasses"... kind of a Blues Brothers thing.

(sorry for the late reply!)

I've run into the same issue, it's hard to decide which helm to stick with for Nightbeat and Siren--but I honestly can't bring myself to draw Nightbeat's helm without the little wing-like chevrons on the front, they complete his look! Also, love the Blues Brothers thing, I totally see that In my opinion, these guys pull of visors better than any other character.

Haha, this is awesome! Really, beautiful lighting and colors. I can almost hear the chaos.

I love the look Nightbeat's giving Siren. Siren doesn't understand the wisdom until waiting until a better time (such as when they're not getting shot at) to give someone an audio-full. AND HE GIVES REALLY LOUD AUDIO-FULLS. The people firing at them can probably hear every word loud and clear 8D

Random Bad Guy: So, uh...should we just wait until he's done? I mean, us shooting at him right now kinda seems like overkill.
Siren: AND ON TOP OF *THAT* I'M NOT EVEN GOING TO *MENTION* THE-
Nightbeat: outwardly: > Shut up, Siren
mentally: ;A; my auuuudios
Random Bad Guy #2: ...Actually, I think by now it's a mercy killing.

Some of my favorite characters ever. Thank you for giving them some love :3

Thank you! I'm glad all that atmosphere came through. I agree that the characters are awesome, and I would've loved to have seen Furman write more "Bird of Prey"-type stories. Especially since Siren and Hosehead didn't get much characterization in that one, and they have a lot of potential.

MattDrawsRobots In reply to coraxonyx [2010-08-11 19:35:46 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, he got a great opener, but then I think Furman was kind of at a loss as to how to use him. Furman did try - like casting him as the one who sought out and found Ratchet and Megatron - but it never worked as well as in that first genre-piece.

Then Furman tried again in the new IDW comics, but it didn't really come together there either. It was an interesting setup - Nightbeat's memories were tampered with in his first story, which I think has great sci-noir potential (think "Blade Runner" or "Memento") - but there was no payoff to speak of.

Maybe someday...

Man, I hear that. And Furman had also killed him off back in G2. I respect that Furman is willing to pull the trigger on even his most popular characters, but honestly, I don't think he's a good enough character-developer to be so cavalier with the few real gems he has.

Very cool. When I saw the thumbnail, I thought you'd straight up copied one of Geoff Seniors pages from the afforementioned "Bird Of Prey" story, but then I saw they had much more Pat Lee-like proportions.
I'm in the middle of doing my first Nightbeat, as a favour to someone, and this has really gotten me inspired!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MattDrawsRobots In reply to Kingoji [2010-02-20 07:17:34 +0000 UTC]

Thanks - Geoff Senior is arguably my favorite of the Marvel TF artists, so I take it as a compliment that you thought of his art first. And I take it as.... not exactly a compliment to be thought of as Pat-Lee-esque. But I can see where you might think that, given Hardhead's proportions especially. I made his head disproportionately small because I wanted his body to be bigger than the others, by the logic that his firetruck alt-mode should be bigger than theirs. And also because I wanted to play up the notion of him being the "big lug" of the trio. (He also sounds like Dave Thomas in Strange Brew in my head, but that's neither here nor there.)

At any rate, I'm glad to have inspired your own work! Like I said to victortky above, I consider that a measure of my own success.

Wow, a three year delay before replying!
Thanks for taking the time to do so. For what it's worth, looking back, I'd say the proportions are much better than Lee's. If they're similar to anyone's, I'd say Joe Ng.
Hope to see more come from you!

Heh, yeah, I really haven't been giving my DeviantArt account the attention I ought to have. No better time than the present, and all that.

I don't know if you saw, but I actually did just put up a new pic a couple of days ago. Talk about delays - that was my first piece of fanart in TWO years, so clearly it's not just the DA comments I've been letting fall to the wayside.

Wow!! Nice! I love the action and the shots of firepower is also very well done! I love the facial expressions and the pose of the characters! I also like the composition designs!

A conversation will be nice!

Siren: Slag! We are pinned down here! Are the reinforcements coming?

Hosehead: COM is jammed, Siren. You know, I did not know that this espionage mission could be that risky! Nightbeat, have you got any spare battery cells? I'm out!

Nightbeat: I know! I know! All matters now is that we must get out from this place and get that decepticon computer out of here!

Siren: Easier said than done! The decepticons want this computer very much! They are not going to give this up without a fight!

"ducks as a missile shot over their heads"

Hosehead: Any more bright ideas?

Nightbeat: I have one...we have to improvise!

That's a brilliantly composed action picture! I think a lot of action shots tend to lack the drama needed but this one feels like i'm right there in the thick of it. Excellent work, and great choice of characters too. Always had a softspot for Siren.

MattDrawsRobots In reply to Jimbobfury [2010-02-20 07:02:30 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! That's exactly what I was going for, so I'm glad it worked for you.

Siren was perhaps the first Transformer I got in that year's lineup, so his tech-spec bio personality as an insufferable loudmouth is who he is in my mind. But then, I really liked Furman's depiction of him as just a straight-man for Nightbeat. I think I managed to capture both elements in this pic, but I don't know how I'd ever write a story that balanced the two throughout.

Carnivius [2007-03-22 17:37:22 +0000 UTC]

Furman sure had that knack of making some of the lesser impressive or not so famous characters (as in not much screentime in the tv show) of the toy range into superb comic characters such as Nightbeat here.

Another fave for me.

BEAUTIFUL! Oh, I love the colors and composition! And so much love for these guys. I unfortunately didn't get to see much of them in action as I only have a very scattered collection of the TF comics, but still.... And man, the look on Nightbeat's face! He almost looks annoyed with his comrades, but maybe it's because he knows he's gonna get an audio full later? XD

MattDrawsRobots In reply to Uftaki [2005-12-07 22:16:26 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, Nightbeat was one of Furman's best characters. It was years later that I found out Furman's personal tastes run to the detective/pulp/noir genre, as opposed to sci-fi. It really showed with "Bird of Prey," and it makes me wish he'd explore his favorite genres more often. Some good mysteries would really bring life to modern TF fiction, I think.

Anyway, thanks for the comment! I'm glad you like the piece.

MattDrawsRobots In reply to Uftaki [2005-12-08 18:01:07 +0000 UTC]

Really? That's a cool factoid.Yeah, I've seen him mention it in an interview or two. Ah, here's one . (Scroll down to question 10.)

Though he mentions being a fan of "real science thrillers" like Crichton, I remember him saying in some other interview that he actually DOESN'T read much straight-up sci-fi. Irony.

Hopefully some mystery elements can be brought in to the TFs...Have you read the new IDW TF comic? It looks like Furman's playing up the clandestine warfare aspect, going back to the robots-in-disguise roots. Right now, the only "mystery" is the one in the eyes of the humans, who don't know what TFs are yet. But there's definitely potential for interesting secrecy and detective-themed stories.

Ah... cool. :3 [irony indeed XD] Ah well... though it has it's basis in sci-fi, the Transformers aren't entirely about sci-fi... It's a mix of genres, with their stories. :3 And yes, I have seen the new comics... Looking foward to the new issues. ^_^ The potential is there, definately...
