Description This was my submission to Convoy of Hope 's "Heroes Give Hope " charity auction benefiting disaster relief in Japan following the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The organization's name inspired me to use Star Convoy , a version of Optimus Prime that only existed in Japan during the waning days of Generation 1 .

Hear, hear. Not only have I never liked the aesthetic of the movieformers, but the character of Optimus Prime has been dragged through the mud. I haven't seen Dark of the Moon yet, but I've heard that he's even more brutal in that than he was in Revenge of the Fallen. Dude sure likes executing prisoners! So I was happy to do a piece celebrating his classic heroic, peaceful ideal.

Dont see it, trust me it's really bad. now Transformers drool more than a fat guy taking a dump and they actually bleed red! it's just a massive clustermolestation of our childhood improved and optimus prime DESTROYS CYBERTRON!! for the sake of a tiny city >___< and Megatron gets killed for real this time and only in 3 seconds!!! Bay has successfully managed to destroy an entire childhood toyline forever since Hasbro/Takara has adapted the movie theme.

Actually I did see it a couple of days ago, and dude, you've got to take some deep breaths. It had its problems, but seriously. Cybertron was a dead husk that Prime repeatedly said didn't matter anymore, plus all that the 'Bots did was disrupt the space bridge, which seemed to be the only option to stop the 'Cons. Cybertron's destruction was an unfortunate but unavoidable side-effect. And it wasn't just Chicago they were saving - it was all of humanity. As for Megatron's death, I was actually happy to see him go so quickly and decisively. No more of this dumped-in-the-ocean or shot-in-the-head-but-still-alive crap. Besides, the TF mythos has plenty of 'Con leaders - hell, Megatron's "screen time" in the old Marvel comics was nothing compared to his successors like Shockwave and Scorponok. I enjoy seeing the 'Con leadership turn over; it feels natural.

And Bay has SO not "destroyed TF forever ." The Classics-style toys have been consistently present during the movie era, the Prime cartoon has at least a three-year plan, and its toys are just around the corner. The massive piles of cash the movie products bring in give Hasbro the means to also invest in side-lines that are geared to us nostalgics. TF could never support itself just on rehashing 1984.

They also died, there went the idea of five movies, i hope there will be none after this one because if i dont get my TF rarities sold on Ebay then i'm going to burn them after what letdown Bay did to me the first time i saw the first movie, i seriously wept outside the cinema so the chance for deep breath is long gone my friend.

MattDrawsRobots In reply to Nils-Iver [2011-07-30 19:08:00 +0000 UTC]

Well, you can at least rest easy that Bay has made very clear he's not going to do any more TF movies. Of course Hasbro wants to keep milking the cash cow, so they'll find somebody else to make more sequels, and perhaps he or she will be better.

Thanks! Yeah, I had the time to spare, and the idea came to be pretty readily, so I figured why not. It's also nice to put this out to the world at the same time that the new movie with its brutal, arguably amoral Prime came out. I haven't seen it yet, but I've heard he's even harsher than in Revenge of the Fallen, so now seems like a perfect time to remind people of his classic, heroic ideal.

Ha-HeePrime In reply to MattDrawsRobots [2011-07-07 17:45:45 +0000 UTC]

Yes, we need to remember the "true" Prime.

Prime's killing sprees upset me a lot more in ROTF than in DotM.
He has his reasons for being ticked off.
And while my own version of Prime would have loved for things to end differently than they do in the final denouement of DotM, even I can understand why it might make sense in the movieverse as it's been set up.
I comfort myself, though, that the novelization of the movie and the comic book both change the ending.
I hope you enjoy it, when you see it. It is worth your time, imo.
Cheers!

MattDrawsRobots In reply to Ha-HeePrime [2011-07-10 17:32:43 +0000 UTC]

Okay, I've seen it now, and I agree that the more disturbing stuff is in RoTF, such as his execution of Demolishor. Still, while his actions in DotM can be rationalized, I think the key factor is that the movie doesn't bother to. We're meant to accept that Prime can do what his brutal enemies had just done a half-hour earlier because he's a "good guy." That kind of thinking is arguably the source of most of our problems in the real world, and to see a character like Optimus being used in its service is just sad.

That having been said, as an action movie it was pretty solid and enjoyable. It had its regrettable moments, but it's about the best send-off from Bay I could've expected.

Ha-HeePrime In reply to MattDrawsRobots [2011-07-10 22:37:16 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I agree with what you say about portraying violence by The Good Guys as ok. A pal of mine noted that the DCons take prisoners, while the ABots just kill. (Granted, the prisoners later get shot, but still.)

And this is why I write fanfiction.....

It's been nice talking with you!

MattDrawsRobots In reply to Ha-HeePrime [2011-07-11 19:44:20 +0000 UTC]

Heh, I like your friend's observation. Like I said, it's easy to rationalize: The Autobots are, what, maybe a dozen strong? Against a gigantic Decepticon army, they don't have the luxury of taking prisoners. Prime's actions at the end could still be justified if the battle was still going offscreen - cut off the head to kill the body, as it were. But the fact that I have to apply that rationale myself doesn't give me a lot of faith in Bay not being psychotic.

I feel like this movie confirmed a notion I've had about Bay for a while: He believes the default state of every non-female is violent rage. This showed up in the first two movies, when all the Allspark-generated TFs instantly started trying to kill people (and arguably succeeded, with that random woman's creepy face-hugger steering wheel. Come to think of it, Carly was also threatened in a similar way inside Soundwave...). It exhibited itself again with Sentinel Prime's attempt to kill Optimus the moment he awoke, and the scene when Dutch went all Bourne Identity and Simmons had to talk him back to rationality. And it infected Sam this time around too, as he spent most of his time yelling, kicking, and generally being a douche. I think I can add "never go drinking with Michael Bay" to my life checklist.

Ha-HeePrime In reply to MattDrawsRobots [2011-07-11 20:13:56 +0000 UTC]

No, Bay does NOT have a very high opinion of his audience's intelligence or capacity for subtlety.

The one thing that gives me hope (and makes me really feel for Prime) is the way he throws his gun down at the bitter end. He knows what he's become. I just wish people would stop trying to see how far they can push Prime into the Evil Zone. No one ever tries to push ol' Meggsie into the Good Zone! And they darn well should. *soapbox moment is a go*

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MattDrawsRobots In reply to Ha-HeePrime [2011-07-30 19:05:28 +0000 UTC]

I don't think Bay is dumbing himself down for the audience's sake. I think the level of intelligence and subtlety, not to mention the underlying concepts about how characters (and by extension people in general) behave, are his own.

As for Megatron getting pushed into the Good Zone, you might be interested in picking up the latest issue of the IDW G1 comic, #22 . It explores Megatron's past in that universe, where he started out as a nonviolent crusader for social justice. You don't finish the issue thinking of him as a good guy - he's still a monster - but at least his history is a bit more nuanced.

This is jaw-droppingly wonderful!! And Yes, if I had money I would TOTALLY bid on this! <3 My only suggestion is maybe that the "Charity Toy Auction" text segment is a little too small? But since it'll be bigger on the poster I really don't think it matters. Seriously though, awesome job!

MattDrawsRobots In reply to CurtainComedy [2011-07-07 15:31:29 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Yeah, the "Charity Toy Auction..." bit will still be pretty big on the final print. Maybe not readable from a distance, but I think that's okay. It's like a movie poster - if the headline makes you interested enough, you'll go in and look at the details.
