Description
There hadn’t been any wail of the early warning system. Several sudden, rhythmic shudders pulled heads up from computer screens and sent shelved books spilling to the ground. In the next instant, the people of the office were buried under thousands of pounds of building. Some managed to survive in the pockets between the stones and beams. The shuddering and quaking never relented. For several perilous minutes, it grew to a thunderous cacophony that threatened to shake the survivors apart beneath the debris.
Instead, the rumbling ceased, and light penetrated the claustrophobic gaps alongside prodigious fingers. The carcass of the structure was heaved away, and a booming voice, nearly inaudible in its bass but distinctly feminine, declared, “I found them!”
What do you think? Personally, I feel like I leveled up with this one! My process was pretty consistent with the way I've built up previous paintings, but something just seemed to click this time.
Having piles of smashed up plaster chunks to look at for the rubble really helped, and I think the realism of this one is in large part due to that reference. It encourages me to keep going with my maquettes and to keep pushing the details with them. It seems like the less I have to try to make up stuff from my imagination, the more I can focus on painting well, technically speaking.
If you're interested in model making for your own art, I highly recommend checking out James Gurney's work. He's got really informative tutorials available on Gumroad, as well as two fantastic books out (Imaginative Realism and Color and Light. They're awesome!).
My first convention is drawing near (October 25th and 26th at the Illuxcon Showcase!), and I think I'll be able to get one more major painting done before then.
A super colossal thank you to all of my patrons for supporting my work and making all of this possible. It means the world to me! If you'd like to support my work, check out my page on Patreon.
Found, oil on canvas, 13.5 x 24 inches.
Also, I recorded myself painting this and made a short video where I talk about technique and stuff. You can find it here!

I really like the idea and execution is so wonderful, as well as lighting, but hard to recognize what's that between giantess hands in the right top corner?

Thank you so much for the kind words! The thing behind her hands in the upper right is a little bit of her bent leg. I wanted to really push the sense of scale with this one, and I think realistically, these giants are so large that it'd be difficult to see all of their bodies at once. If you're curious about the reference photos and process I used to paint this, I have all the behind the scenes up on my Patreon , and well as this Youtube video where I filmed myself painting!

Oh, now it looks like leg, but I think that black line on it confused me somehow. Visual perspective maybe. Thanks for the links!

Oh man, this came out so awesome! Can you imagen being one of those people down on the ground? Rubble collapsed all around you, feeling the rubble shift with each step of these massive creatures walking around and then one of them lifts the building off of you.

Thank you so much man! Yeah, it'd be absolutely terrifying to be on the ground. Especially that moment of uncertainty when the rumbling gets close, and you're not sure if it's a friend or foe.

I really like those hands. Beautiful nails just the right size covering the top of the fingers perfectly. Excellent.

No early warning...so this could be a time when the systems were still nascent along with Lioness, this wasn't an area where the researchers believed the creatures would move out to, someone didn't pay the early warning system fee, or this was an earthquake plain and simple and Lioness helped out without prompting from a giant monster being the culprit.
Regardless, nice hands. Strong but still feminine. And the leg too, sturdy. The light filtering down, the giant's own big form obscuring more of the light from reaching the people below. And that rubble, great stuff!
From the Work-in-Progress back in June I thought it was a more party type dress; but this was an office encounter. The red is not there, or at least I can't see it so maybe she'll live.
If more of the vehicle was in the shot you could have probably put "Huntley 2019" on the car itself like a bumper sticker of you running for public office.

Thank you for your always wonderfully detailed comments! Sorry it took me so long to reply- life has been really busy since I posted this one! I had a really, really good time painting the rubble. And I think my girlfriend did a fantastic job modeling as the giantess! The light filtering down was the core idea that inspired the whole piece actually. I was looking at a lot of Baroque classical paintings, especially Caravaggio, and that's a big feature of his work.
It's funny, another friend had the same suggestion to put the signature on the bumper. I did a mockup in Photoshop of it, but it just didn't feel quite right. I worry a lot about distracting the viewer with the signature, or breaking the immersion, so I try to always keep it separate from the actual content of the painting. I saw a portrait painting of Wolverine once, and the artist had put his signature on one of Wolverine's claws! It was so jarring, and I always think back to that when I'm figuring out where to put mine.
Thanks again for the kind words! I'm excited to start showing off things for the next piece soon!
