When Mai first showed up in Avatar, I despised her. She was a pouty, depressing, heartless crony of Azula. In that first episode that we meet her, she even trades her baby brother's safety for Azula's delusions.
These feelings stayed pretty constant throughout the series until this moment. Her ex-boyfriend Zuko, having turned traitor and joined the gAang, locks her in a cell. When she gets out, she finds Zuko and his friends on the gondola escaping, and the guards in the midst of cutting the line.
She has a choice to make. Azula or Zuko. A rich, safe life in the fire nation with her family, or imprisonment for treason and betrayal.
This time she doesn't choose Azula.

It was an epic episode. It was a spectacular manner of a character's heel-face-turn...a defining period of character development, and a revelation of her true self. She lived up to all of my expectations....and more.

I think she was mighty courageous to stand up to Azula. She threw away her life to help him escape on a mission she didn't support.

Thank you! Those mountains took longer then I expected (and I ended up covering half of them with fog), but I'm happy with the end result. The clouds could have been done a little better, and I wish that I had put a little more shadow on Mai's face.
