Description
GO, GREEN RANGER, GO!Hokay. First off, I take no credit regaurding Zyuranger, Power Rangers or anything related. My last Deviation had some copy-righted materials (in a non-infringing way) and it got taken down, so I'm making my disclaimer now.
In case you can't recognize him, that is the nefarious Green Ranger! Here we see riot police attempting to take him down after a rampage of distruction. However, he is impervious to their counter-offensive and seems to barely notice.
This is the second bit of promotional art I've done for the upcoming project between one Jack Bacon and I. We're taking the original Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, which we adored as children and completely redesigning it to be an online manga more befitting our matured tastes. Our version will hopefully be truer to the original Super Sentai shows, have more epic action, a cooler look, more compelling character development and just generally be more badass. However, we also intend to not destroy the ideas that made us love the show when we were growing up, so other old-school fans can still appreciate it. We are of course, looking for help and support.
Artistically, this piece held some challenges for me. This is my first real attempt at working the lines out of the piece. It makes me overjoyed that it came out so well. The background isn't nearly as good as I wanted, but the real focus is the ranger, and trying to convey him as scary and powerful. The rubble he's sitting on is done in ArtRage, which I find is excellent if you're looking for a painted look. Hopefully people will FULLVIEW in order to see all the detail I tried to put into it, such as the texturing on the cape. (speaking of which, not all the rangers have capes, just the Green, and it will probably retract.)

They're actually supposed to be cops in riot gear, but if they look like Mandalorians to you, that's awesome enough to let be.

Even lasers, with the proper application of the Dagger's music, just reflect off of the shield armour, so why the riot police think THEY would have a chance...
Still, great piccy.

I actually thought it was weird that with big green or any of the various monsters that went around destroying buildings, that the cops NEVER tried to do ANYTHING in the show. They never would even try to contain the situation until the Power Rangers arrived. I mean, what, did they have something /better/ to do? XD
And just for fun's sake, there's one cop in there with a bazooka. Poor guy thinks it will do more than just piss him off.

Well, with Green, if the Power Rangers got easily defeated by him, twice, then you'd lose heart in trying to stop him through the police too. Plus while Villians attack it would be the perfect time for crime to strike.
Still, Evil Green was the most awesome force on the show eg. when he had to be beaten by the Megazord, while he was still at normal size.
Course, if Green really wanted to be evil, he could play the tune that allows him to reflect projectiles (As seen in the last Green with Evil part), cue dead policemen.

Oh wow! I'm really liking this. I had similar idea for reimagineing the rangers too, but I could never sit sown and write it. I really like where your idea is going, and using the movie designs as a basis is perfect. I can't to see how this turns out. Long live the Power Rangers!

Thanks a lot, man. And yeah, I was going for the movie style, but trying to take it up a notch. On the other rangers' costumes I pretty much took directly from the film, but changed a lot of little things, especially on the helmets...

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that that shouder vest was incomplete without a cape!
And it does indeed look more badass.
Be sure to make an uber dark Lord Zedd and/or Ivan ooze!

Shoulder armor gots ta have a cape, that's the way it goes! I dunno if you've heard of Guyver or not, but I was a bit inspired by the Zoalord armors in that particular anime. Besides, capes and cloaks on badguys is just so cool. I mean, look at Darth Vader and Doctor Doom. You want a guy to look dynamic, you give him a cape. Want him to look sinister, give him a really big cape and pointy edges. X3
As for Zed and Ivan, don't you worry. Those to granddaddies of all PR villians will definately get attention. Our writer JB is thinking up some pretty interesting backstory that relates them to Zordon and Dulsea in some neat ways. That'll all probably show up in the prologue... if we ever manage to get this off the ground. >.<;;

I know EXACTLY what you mean. It's also like in Dragon Ball Z.... Vegeta's armor looked MUCH BETTER with a cape.
Capes do much for one's image. It definately adds a sense of power behind them. Hence why movie Doom didn't feel nearly as imposing as his comic counterpart: he wore a green trench coat w/ a hoody... oooo, i'm shakin'!
Yay!! I was re-watching MMPR: the Movie. I saw much potential w/ both of them, especially Ooze. But all those one-liners... *cringe* I ended up imagining editting the movie to get rid of those one-liners. I mean, I'm all for a dark villain with a sense of humor (my favorite villain of all time is the Joker)... but "What is that odious stench? Smells like teenagers...." I'm just askin' you, beggin' you!! Give him darker humor!
I wish you the best of luck on tht. I know what it's like to have a story, and you have basic plot, all the characters, even drawn out the chatacters... but when you go to write, you end up staring at a white screen. Hence why a character I created in Kindergarten still doesn't have a decent story behind him... I'm a sophomore in college now...

Actually, I think the cape works great with the character and design, it's just the texture made it look washed out in this image. And of couse there will be other rangers! Couldn't very well be Power Rangers without ol' Jason or Billy or Kimberly. Though, Trinny seems to be inconsequential... There will even be other PR series characters like Doggie Krueger, and even some non PR characters, like Kamen Rider. I don't know why it's not uploaded in my scraps, but here's an image I did a loooong time ago of the rangers as a kinda teaser (sorry it's lo-rez) [link] rposternu3.jpg

Thank you. ^_^ The costumes in our version are a little bit of a revamp from the movie, and I thought I could take some extra liscences with the green ranger, as he's supposed to look different from the others.

Yeah, I would expect it to be one of those really time-consuming things, like removing lined paper lines from pencil drawings . . . ><;; You did a fantastic job, though, especially keeping details in using only colour.

Yup. Those riot police don't stand one eensie chance.
I am digging that CAPE! And the little details in his armor that you made shiny. You did a really excellent job! I agree, the lines aren't apparent at all. Nothing to distract from the color. That's the other thing. It's nifty how he stands out amidst all that darkness.

What I loved about the green ranger of the original Power Ranger series was the fact his weapon double as some sort of flute/wind instrument and could summon his godzilla-like machine to do his bidding. lol.
I also love the extra details in this image, notably the design on the bottom of his sole. You'd think you wouldn't pay attention to things like that, but it sorta draws you in. (Imagine, of all the impressive art in the image, the thing I'm attracted to the most are the bottom of his boots. XD)
Very nice overall. Your joint project sounds intriguing. Can't wait to see more about that later.

Oh, rest assured, his flute still does that. Among other things. >.> I don't know if my brother has decided on this, but I believe our version of Tommy may be much more of a musician, so to speak.
As for his sooole, that really comes from this weird thing I have about not wanting an area of a character's design not to look too bare. The designs of the Rangers in our version are based off the outfits worn in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers the Movie, though the green ranger is, of course, signifigantly different. Still, in the film, the bottoms of thier shoes were flat and I just thought that was way too simple and l4me. I mean, if it's there, why not do something to it to make it worth seeing, right? The only thing is, my brother said since I put the green ranger's symbol on the bottom of his shoes, I have to put everyone elses' on theirs... and everyone elses are way more complex... -_- I don't know if anyone noticed, but that's actually the White Ranger's symbol on his heel... foreshadooowing...

I can understand how you don't want any area to look dull, but at the same time, sometimes simplicity is best. Having something to cover in each area might actually ruin the image in my opinion.
And considering I haven't watch the PR since I was in elementary school, I don't even remember what symbols they have. XD
