Description Aaand the final commission for this slot set is complete! This one is of the captain that I have had the privilege to draw several times now, this time discussing service history with Commander Shepherd from Mass Effect. This scene went through lots of different pose renditions, and I'm really happy with the one we decided on.

I initially had the WORST time trying to draw Shepherd. All of my practice sketches were turning out as absolute garbage. In the end I realized that I was so focused on drawing her features that I wasn't drawing in my own style. Instead of drawing an eye and adding the make up/refining the shape to be hers, I was trying to draw her eye with no base. Same with the chin and lips. I wasn't mapping the face, so nothing was where it should be. I switched back to my normal routine of mapping a face and refining it to match her features from there.Things started running far smoother after that. (Her hair was another story.

I would have really liked to make the floor a darker grey, as it would have separated it from the light chairs and walls and given me more of a base to shade the chairs with, but the reference we used had light floors and all of my mid-grey markers are DEAD (which only happened after I'd started colouring the outfits, which are nearly entirely coloured with mid-greys, so that was fun...*SCREAMING*). Copic refills still aren't available in Canada (leastways, none of the in store or online resources I use), so I won't be able to take any commissions with neutral greys or blacks for a while. The background is based on a room I found on StarStation. While I moved some chairs, added a table, and threw in a planet and the fighters outside, the architecture is heavily based on that 3D model. (I'm not sure if it appears in a game or not? I'm still very new to the Trek universe.)

I just sat glued to a chair for three days working on this...and my hip and back have no complaints. Normally I'd be hunched at a 90' angle for the next 48 hours while I try to straighten my back out. This drafting table was everything I was hoping it would be.

Commissions will be closed for a little while (not the three months they were last time, I promise ). I spoiled myself and bought "The Sketchbook of Loish: Art in Progress," which includes tips and tutorials, so I want to give myself the chance to read through it (and practice the things I want to integrate) before accepting any new ones. It should arrive in about a week, so until then I'll try to finish some personal projects and perhaps get another YCH or two pumped out. As always, if anyone has any questions about future commissions/quote inquiries I'm happy to chat.

I'm most of the way done a piece that's painted with dissolved iron supplements, so that should be up soon.

Done with Copics on Strathmore marker paper, as always. Hints of gel pen and white pencil crayon are added for accents. Commander Shepherd and Mass Effect are owned by EA and Bioware.
