Description
I finished one of the two commissions I wasn't able to work on from the last batch! This one actually came together really quickly, which was nice.
I tried a new method for colouring the background where I use washi tape and cut around it with a box cutter so I can mask off things like the hand and her hair when I was colouring large areas so I didn't have to painstakingly go around them (and mess up anyway), resulting in the area to be streaky because it dried while I was working around corners. It worked wonders! Kept my lines straighter, too. (I know the wall still looks patchy, but that's because my scanner eats gradients for breakfast. It's not perfectly smooth in person but I promise it's better than the comb in the corner.)
One more commission from the last batch (of which I'm still waiting on fabric in the mail) and then I can open the next batch.
The last time I was commissioned to draw this character (the Captain) I wasn't fully happy with it. There was something I couldn't put my finger on. (I know what it is, now: for all of my art back then I had the eyes sitting on the face instead of resting down into it, so they all ended up looking super close together. Same with the mouths, looking too far forward. It looks like they're all having small-face contests. *shudders* Oh, how we learn.) As such, I was thrilled for the opportunity to tackle him again. While he doesn't look a lot like the character I drew last time, I feel like he looks a LOT closer to the person he's based on, plus just improvement in general, so I'm pleased.
Last time I drew him:
If anyone sees anything major I keep doing wrong in my current art, please point it out so I can fix it. It takes me forever to find these things on my own.
As for Samus, she was fun to draw, though I kept thinking her mole was an eraser shaving and continuously tried to sweep it off the page. I've been meaning to practice loose-ish clothing (Sam tends to wear fitted knit fabrics and I often draw them in an ironed cotton shirt), so this was exactly the type of shirt I was looking to work on.
This is actually my fifth commission from this individual (which I super appreciate!). The other four have been military-style portraits, and while those are fun in their own right, it was nice to be able to loosen up the characters a little and put them in a scene.
ACHIEVEMENT ONLOCKED: DREW A CHAIR THAT ACTUALLY RESEMBLES A CHAIR
(I'm really bad at drawing inanimate objects, okay?)
Hope everyone's staying safe! While I wait on the fabric for the last commission I hope to get a mermaid or two done.
