Description
I was a little fed up, and I wanted to help a bit those who don't know how to extract an object from a stock image properly.
So here it is, my little crappy tutorial! This is the first I ever made, I hope you'll find it useful and clear..
All stock is mine.

Don't forget to read the stock rules , credit and fav!
And most important, have fun!

It's crappy and really ugly, but I don't like to make tutorials...
But I was a little fed up to see so many nice manipulations with an ugly extraction

I never tried the pen before... I really love the magnetic lasso

The lasso is quite good, but it's really not precise...
And to have a nice line, you have to add a lot of points, which is as long as the pen technique.
It's different for everybody, all depends on the result you want to have.
This way is a little more complicated and long maybe, but the final image is neat, well cut and easily added to another background.
I don't want to oblige everybody to use the pen, but I think it's truly the best way to extract something like a pro.

what does the feather modifier do? I only have Gimp. I also use pathes to extract objects and then i fill the selection with black in the alpha layer, deselect and add a little blur to the alpha layer, so the edges combine a bit with the background.

The feather helps to have the lines blurred on 0.5 px so the whole model/object is neat and the lines are smooth, so the integration is more natural. 1 px is too much 'cause you can see it clearly.
There's a lot of ways to have the same result in Toshop and Gimp, if you like the way you make it, there's no prob

this is excellent. i knew about the background eraser and the magnetic lasso but i always prefer the magic wand tool to the lasso. now i can give the pen ago. thx
is this good with removing bits of background where sum1s hair has parted slightly as well?

For the hair it's a little more complicated.
You can make it with the pen, but the result won't be natural...
I'm working on another tuto for the hair ^^

My favorite way to cut things out too.
Except hair.

Indeed, it doesn't work for hair ^^
Maybe I will make another tutorial for hair, but with the technique I know, it demands an image with really high resolution...

Usually what I do for hair is create a channel mixer layer in monochrome, copy it as a new channel, burn the shadows and dodge the highlights, and hope for the best.

^^
My technique is a little more complicated, but when you know how to do the result is always nice
You have to play with the layers of the image, and make a selection in black ad white..

Thanks for this. I get a good result using my own method, but not as quickly as you do here. I was in a photo "sweat shop" in Phnom Penh last month and the dozens of workers touching up photographs were all using a tool that I didn't recognize. I see here that it was/is the pen tool. Mystery solved and time saved by you for me.
Thanks
