Description [Now that my wings can no longer fly
I'll tear them off
and when I do
I'll walk on air and float in the sky.]

All About Lily Chou-Chou is a astoundingly confusing and astoundingly beautiful and thought-provoking film. I've never seen such a use of color and scenery used like that before (Zhang Yimou is big on color, but in a different fashion). Plus the acting was great, too. And the music blew me away. That's always a good thing.

You'll probably get a lot of the imagery I used here if you've seen the film before. The boy in the center is Yuichi, the poor sod.

Anyway, I don't think this will be the last Lily painting of the lot. I'm not really satisfied with the way it turned out, but hey, that's self-criticism for ya. The blue stuff is water, BTW.

Watercolor, pencil, gel pen and Photoshop (for contrast/sharpening).

I really like how you did this painting. It has that ethereal feel to it, like the movie. I cried while watching that movie. Great job!

Really stunning piece of work you've created here.
Yuichi is drawn so well, instantly recognised him the moment I laid my eyes on this.
The mix of dark and bright greens at the forefront of the picture is excellent, I especially like the white outlines of all the people.
Back to Yuichi again, I particularly like his hair, and the expression he holds.
All the different pieces from certain scenes are also apparent, and really put together well.
Stunning work.

UWA! You always do such inspired pieces X3 I'm always excited to see your name come up for a new piece. This one is very striking. I love the colors and the composition is to die for! I really like the people at the bottom..and wow..that flower really catches your eye X3.

I have to ask one question..The triangle design around the eye...Did you perhaps use that from an African tribal design? I know I've seen something similar to it, and it represents eyes that are always watching. I know that they're used as tattoos so that you can "see behind you", or keep an eye on someone. I loved that concept since I'd seen it, and I was just wondering if you were using the same thing, or just found the design to be nice.^^

Thanks so much for the lovely comments!

Actually, the triangles are inspired by the work of David Mack, the artist who created the comic series "Kabuki". He uses the triangles a lot in his paint and ink works. You should definetly check him out!

bruceleewannabe In reply to mementomoryo [2005-04-21 21:27:51 +0000 UTC]

hmm, it might've been in the beginning... there was a girl in a field and she saw a group of boys flying kites and one of them let her fly one. in between there was a scene with five boys and a girl and... flashlights. o_o that's all i remember

The people around the bottom are all like: "Hi, we're people!" And I'm like: "You sure are."

I dunno, that really strikes me. I'm liking the vague, green, people-like sillhuettes gradually fading into obscurity behind them, before it gets into that whole stripe of white separating that whole thing from the mask-like bit.

The city/industrial backdrop is kinda neat, almost overlooked that with all the water, butterflies, fish and grass and whatnot in the foreground.

Oh look, headphones!

That's some crazy detail.

The picture itself is very thought provoking, very surreal and beautiful.
The use of colors, blacks and whites, blues and greens really evokes the mood and setting of the piece. I think this one of your best yet...Very impressive !

Actually, it wasn't a carp. It was like this huge crazy fish that almost killed a character in the movie because it flew out of the water towards his torchlight. Crazy! But you can hug him all you want.
