Description
I'm back with another drawing! This one is an introspective self-portrait that I did in my composition class. The assignment was to include a minimum of 5 objects that you feel are closely related to you or your aesthetic, so I'll go through mine briefly.Jellyfish and koi: Some of my best childhood memories are of fishing with my dad when I was little. We used to go way out into the ocean and see sharks and sea-turtles and jellyfish, and all sorts of other awesome things. So the aquatic animals in my self-portrait are a thank you to him.
Japanese fan: This is a reference to my instrument, the koto (Japanese harp)! Because it's basically a 6ft. long hunk of wood, it would have been hard to make look good in the piece. So that's why I chose a fan to represent it. I also coincidentally received that fan as a thank you for a concert that I did, so they're still closely related.
Cherry blossoms: The cherry blossoms are a nod to my old art teacher, who is really responsible for pushing me back into the art world after I had pretty much given up on it. She taught me to do sumi-e, or Chinese ink painting, so that's why I rendered the cherry blossoms in that style.
Art utensils: Well this is pretty explanatory - I don't think it's any secret that I love art! The tools behind me are all my favorite things to use.
So that's it! This self-portrait took 40 hours to complete. It's 14x17 on Bristol, and done in absolutely nothing but colored pencil (which is probably why it took so long). This piece is actually going to hang in the Capitol Building for an ENTIRE YEAR starting this summer, so you guys have no idea how excited and honored I am!!!

How can I even make a critique on this work?
I mean, all I see is an amazing work, emotionally and technically.
If there's some mistakes, I can't seem to find them.
What I like the most is the objects and animals related to you disposed as a fan around you ( seems obvious, since there's also a fan, but I was talking about the whole composition.), like an aura or a halo related to your passions.
The really outstanding thing is the ghostly effect you got with the colors.
As I stated before, the composition is perfect.
The anatomy is pretty spot-on, the only flaw I see is the shoulders, they seem too small, too close. But maybe I'm wrong on this one, I can't tell.
Anyway, in two words: Outstandingly Dreamy.

Amazing artwork! I love how it looks, the colors you used and the composition in general. It's hard to use colored pencils, since it gets a lot of time.
If I can make you a question... I'm searching for buying some colored pencils. Which ones do you recommend me?

Thank you! I appreciate the comment.
Well the pencils that I use are Prismacolor - I got a 72 count set for Christmas a couple of years ago that I'm in love with. I know they're pretty expensive though, so you could also try out Derwent - I've heard good things from my art friends about those.

Thanks! I can't buy the most expensive ones, so I will look if Derwent ones are available in Spain.

very nice! I wish the colors were a little richer/darker/fuller though. Colored pencil is hard to work with... What kind of pencils did you use?

I used Prismacolors - I've used bright, solid colors with them before (see image below) but was kind of scared to do that with this piece since I was working with flesh tones. I wish I would have looking back though, haha. Thanks for the feedback!

Congratulations on getting this displayed!
Lovely composition, particularly how you interposed the utensils into the Japanese fan. Love the tones in the hair.

I really like this piece, especially the dynamic composition and the realism of the portrait. You did a great job with your use of colored pencils! I also really like the color scheme of the fan behind you.
As for improvement, there isn't much I can think of...if anything, I think parts of the top part of the piece (like the two fish) could use a bit more detailing/color variation to better match the level of realism of the rest of the piece, but that's a minor thing. Overall, I think the piece is very well done both technically and conceptually
