Description
My rendition of Little Red Riding Hood. I have to say, I was really influenced by golden age illustrators when working on this piece, people like Kay Nielsen and Virginia Frances Sterrett. Their work is so beautiful, and I highly recommend that anyone who enjoys my piece looks up theirs as well.This took a LOT of time because of all the detailing that I did in the trees - I'd say it totaled out to around 50 hours. Let's just say I watched a lot of Law and Order while making this one.
I did all of it using pen and ink, a red Prismacolor colored pencil, and 18x24 Strathmore gray toned sketch paper.Tumblr

I totally love this. All the wonderful patterns and shapes, the lovely flow of the wolf's fur, so spare use of red that really really makes things work. I would not have thought of using a gray toned paper, but I think it adds to the subtlety. White would have been too stark. Did you use a white Prismacolor for the bits of white I can see? And also agree with you about the illustrators you recommend.

Oh, thank you!! I LOVE working with toned paper, there's something about it that makes ink less scary to use.
I actually used white charcoal for the highlights, which worked very well. The colored pencil (as I found out after coloring in the red areas) gave more of a waxy finish than I was hoping for, so I went for the charcoal instead.
