So, the other three parts were BASICALLY centered around Hans' anatomy cB
but I did want to show something where all that information applies
I'm chill with you using the other information, but DO NOT steal these character designs

After reading all of your winged humanoid tutorials, I thank you extensively for them. I have been trying to make all of my OCs more anatomically correct and many of my feather-winged OCs looked strange to me. Many made me wonder how they were even airborne and some, even now that I am correcting thier anatomy, still bother me. Besides looking at birds, I had been using dragons to get around the double shoulder issue. However, applying that design to humans was difficult especially since most dragons have bat wings and are quadrapedal. Plus, finding good winged human anatomy is hard. There aren't enough good references to be found honestly. This is a beautiful study into how the body would function with wings. I really can't thank you enough.

thank you! my inspiration for doing these was the lack of any other tutorials on this when i was trying to figure it out. I hope people make more though! I like seeing the different theories behind this sort of anatomy

Your Welcome. I might give my hand at it using some of my OCs to illustrate my problems with the wings I see people draw....I've almost completely remastered and revamped one of my demon OCs because he literally wouldn't have been able to fly... 8 ft wingspan on a 6 ft guy....doesn't work too well... xD So now that same demon is floating around on turkey vulture wings with a 20 ft wing span ^^

Mmhmm....I've even modified my harpy to be more correct....that one was hard....he has the hollow bones and all but still....getting a large wingspan when the arms are the wings is harder ^^

That should be easier since you don't have arms in the way lol

This is very interesting. Do you have any suggestions or tips on where I might find the best human anatomy and bird anatomy references if I wanted to research something like this more? I know the basics about wings I think but I know next to nothing about the actual anatomy and how it works

You can probably prob the internet for hours like I did for all kinds of anatomy, there's plenty of human and bird anatomy diagrams on the internet, or you can find articles that explain what muscles/bones/whatever do what, which was helpful for me when I looked into pterosaur anatomy. There are a lot of books on anatomy too, I referenced "Drawing Human Anatomy" by Giovanni Civardi a lot, "Artistic Anatomy" by Dr. Paul Richer has in depth drawings. Look into comparative anatomy too, between humans and other animals/winged creatures - if you think about it, the wing is structured similarly to the human arm and has a lot of the same muscles that do the same motions.
hope that helps

I am VERY interested to see a completed version of this Sala from the back. I have been looking everywhere, but this is the only full-length full-body feathered tail I really and truly love. Seeing the whole guy finished would be really cool!
And I love quite enjoy 'going up' to.

I was actually searching all over for studies on winged humanoids, and I'm very pleased to have found this. I've been working on developing a winged humanoid race, and I will most certainly be using this as a reference guide. Thank you for providing this wonderful resource!
One thing I would like to ask about though. Many people will put small hand-like attachments onto the joints of wings (usually where the thumb on a bat would be). Could you perhaps add a bit more to your study looking into these? I've been trying to figure out if such a thing would be realistically anatomically plausible and how they might work and look, assuming the attachments would be capable of use like a hand at all and not simply be a useless vestigial attachment. Would the wing even be capable of functioning like an arm if it had such an attachment? Would modified bird or bat anatomy work, or would it have to be some sort of completely new structure?

This tutorial has a good visual about arm-wings: [link]
You could probably do it at the cost of a finger or two (or I guess you could add more phalanges if you wanted to). As this tutorial says, you will have to modify the pinky finger etc to accommodate flight. For bird wings, the one finger should do it since bird's technically have one fused "finger" in their wings. The downside is that bird's have ligaments in their wings that prevent the elbow, wrist and shoulder form moving independently, so you would lose most of the mobility that the human arm has. [link] With bat wings, they do not have these ligaments and would move similarly to a human arm, however, the phalanges of the bat's wing are used to manipulate the membranes of the wing, which helps it fly - so you could limit the number of finger on the "hand", or add more phalanges (to a reasonable amount). There's nothing stopping you from combing both bat a bird wings either.
Many people have suggested I look into pterosaur wings, which is also another option. [link] From what I remember from reading, their wing structure is most similar to a human arm. So you can play around with that two.
The best way to do this is to keep the "hand" and wing as one unit. Dont try and make them separate units because it tends to get more complicated with where to put muscles and all that. Dont make the "hand" bend back towards the shoulder (like in the show Gargoyles, bad exampled of hand/wing). Imagine the wing as an extension of the hand, or the hand a segment of the wing
I hope that helps

I've been trying to figure out how this might work for quite some time now, and have been poring over muscle structure diagrams till my eyes were sore... now I realize that you've got it all worked out...
Well on to centaurs
I do have one question however, have you considered insect wings at all? To me the indirect muscle system for flight most bugs use should be relatively easy to fit into a human torso compared to bird or bat wings (though wings that fragile, and the need for an exoskeleton raise their own problems.)
In case you are unaware of their mechanics the following link leads to a great diagram.
[link]
Incredible job though, you've saved me a lot of contemplation, thanks.

no problem! And no I haven't considered insect wings because I figured it would be relatively easy lol I think most people tend to go with the more attractive wings I guess, so I hoped to provide some insight to that as well as for my own purposes.
