Description ***EDIT***
Sorry for all the editing guys. Compressing this file really blurred the image a little more than I would have hoped, so I had to try to sharpen and resize it...Doesnt help when dA throws the res down to 72 either.
***END EDIT***

GLINDA: I hope you're happy now that you're choosing this.
ELPHABA: You too, I hope it brings you bliss.
BOTH: I really hope you get it, and you don't live to regret it. I hope you're happy in the end. I hope you're happy, my friend.
--Defying Gravity, Wicked the Musical

ELPHABA: And just to clear the air, I ask forgiveness for the things I've done you blame me for.
GLINDA: But then, I guess we know there's blame to share.
BOTH: And none of it seems to matter anymore.
--For Good, Wicked the Musical

Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West, from the musical Wicked.
This is the Broadway musical currently taking up my time, as well as being better than Phantom of the Opera (but that's sort of unfair to say since this isnt an opera).

Gift art for ~daphnemoon (sorry I short changed you on all that lovely detail Elphie's dress should have ).

No harsh critiques please. I know my rendering of green skin sucks. Deal with it.

Let me know if you think this is even close.

It is Idina. The easiest way to tell is by the eyes and jawline. Each Elphaba will look the same except for those two places.

Yeah, plus the Japanese version is only like an hour or something. I dont know what they cut out, since I cant see them cutting any part out. It's all important!!
Also it's in Japanese and English, so it does sound really silly.

It's only an HOUR! Wow, that's so weird...ya, what could they possibly cut?
Umm, that's weird The sets are really different too, like in "Popular"
they don't have the beds and it looks like the clock cog wheel theme isn't
aparent. Maybe they don't have the dragon either, eek! Ya...the random
English words are weird...like how they'll say "popular" and "wicked"...
and Glinda's way too graceful and not awkward...they did a weird take on it!

I've had people tell me that this picture it's really my own work and that I just took a picture of Elphaba and put a filter over it to look like it was drawn, so I've had to send people to my scraps page to see the WIP (work in progress) so they would know that I did actually draw this
I've got an image in my gallery of Glinda and Elphie too, if you're interested.

Omg i love this, it looks soo much like idina... just one nitpick about the description... Phantom of the Opera is NOT and opera. An opera is sung all the way through with no dialogue, and the singing in phantom is not operatic either (i LOVE it, but it's not operatic.. maybe a couple operatic notes of carlotta's ) just needed to clear that up. Both Phantom and Wicked would be classified as "musical theatre," not opera... anyways great pic and i'm not trying to be mean i'm just trying to expand your knowledge. =^___^=

michiruokami In reply to InsaneMoose [2007-09-14 02:24:03 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for that, but I assure you I never called Wicked an opera. In fact, I said, and I quote:
This is the Broadway musical currently taking up my time, as well as being better than Phantom of the Opera (but that's sort of unfair to say since this isnt an opera).

And, Phantom of the Opera is an opera, in the fact that it falls under the 'rock opera' category. Just an fyi Although, yes it's not a true opera like Un bel dΓ vedremo.

Some knowledge swaping I'm really glad you like the picture, I think my other wicked image does more justice to Idina than this one. The reference for this is literally an inch by and inch.

She did die in the novel. However, because musicals don't end with the title character's death, Elphie lived in the musical.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

michiruokami In reply to TherealRNO [2007-05-01 17:12:55 +0000 UTC]

The musical is based on the book Wicked, and she doesnt die in that either. The spin they put on the Witch Witch of the West's death is kind of nice in that it tells us not to take The Wonder Wizard of Oz's words for face value, because it's written from Dorothy's point of view....So maybe she didnt die.
But yes, in Oz, she dies.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TherealRNO In reply to michiruokami [2007-05-01 20:54:23 +0000 UTC]

The book--Wicked--is an adaptation OF original tale and it DOES use the same basic premise as the original, but just through Elphie's eyes.

michiruokami In reply to TherealRNO [2007-05-02 00:10:52 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I know. That's what I liked about it.

Don't get me wrong, I like the original novel very much, and while Wicked was a terrible read (as far as writing styles go) I did enjoy it very much as well. Obviously they should be taken as seperate entities, but I like to think that sometimes the story can be in what the author doesnt tell you, or wishes you not to know, which is EXACTLY was Wicked provided for The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

To link the three (i.e. the original Oz tale, the '39 MGM film, and Wicked [and its sequel]), I'd just assume that Oz and Wicked each give you a different side to the same story (Oz through Dorothy Gale's point of view & Wicked through the eyes of Elphaba, the not-so truly "Wicked" Witch of the West) and that in all, Elphie did die, but she was revived (like the 90's cartoon that revived her). Upon being revived, she went into hiding, considering how people forever now dislike her for the stigma the original Oz tale gave her.

Meanwhile, the man Elphie loved--Fyiero--who was accidentally morphed into a scarecrow that lost his memories of his past life (hence why he wished that he "only had a brain", although he never has once as it pertained to relationships [given that--though he loved Elphie once--he seemingly flirted with Dorothy in the original Oz tale & moreso in the film), he became temporary leader of Oz until Ozma was free (as seen in "Return To Oz" after Elphie & Nessa's head-hunting cousin, Mombie, was defeated & the Nome King taken care of).

michiruokami In reply to TherealRNO [2007-05-03 23:56:25 +0000 UTC]

Ah yes, Return to Oz. I always did find it amusing that the Scarecrow took over as temporary King of Oz.
Elphaba being revived makes far more sense of the books, than the idea that she never truely did die. Considering what the magic of that world can do, and give life to (as seen in Return to Oz), the idea that she was raised from the dead sounds plausible. I have read the Wicked novel once, and I cant recall how exactly they tackled that, but I do recall them calling that section of the story her 'afterlife'. Revival sounds much more realistic than the idea the musical decided to go with.
Although Wicked doesnt seem to counter or cross what the original novels state (mind you I have not read Son of a Witch. I dont know that I could stand to read another novel in Macquire's style), the musical steps on many toes. If you assume that the Scarecrow is in fact Fiyero, then by the play version he could not have become King of Oz, as he leaves with Elphaba to live a life of exile. Neither could he have actually lost his brain, since it seems to me, that he would not have agreed to go along with the idea of killing Elphaba and additionally he returns to save Elphaba in the end, which also suggest they has a predetermined plan. I also doubt, very much that Glinda would have allowed Dorothy to keep the ruby slippers. In the play she understands the value those shoes hold for Elphaba.
However, the musical is an adaptation of an adaptation of an original novel. So, in reality, it should be viewed as an entity of it's own and not part of the original and subsequent storyline.

--If you assume that the Scarecrow is in fact Fiyero, then by the play version he could not have become King of Oz, as he leaves with Elphaba to live a life of exile.--

But, time wise, that could have also happened some time after the events of "Return To Oz", once Ozma was back in control.

"Neither could he have actually lost his brain, since it seems to me, that he would not have agreed to go along with the idea of killing Elphaba"

Recall that her spell made him lose his memories. Therefore, he still had a "brain" per se, but he couldn't recall anything beyond his life as a Scarecrow, hence his "you weren't around when I was stuffed and sewn together, were you" comment, and why "Fyiero" no longer existed (and consequently, his memories of Elphaba).

"and additionally he returns to save Elphaba in the end, which also suggest they has a predetermined plan."

Who says he didn't? The original tale never truly into the character's interactions beyond that of what Dorothy perceived, and remember that perceptions can be altered or changed.

"I also doubt, very much that Glinda would have allowed Dorothy to keep the ruby slippers. In the play she understands the value those shoes hold for Elphaba."

That's the play, because in the musical, everyone is "happily ever after" cliche in that everyone is happy in the end. In the novel though, Elphie is killed, and Dorothy is lead to believe that the events in "The Wonderful Wizard" are what really happened and that the East & West Witches were forever Wicked (which we know from any form of "Wicked" is far from the truth, but by the time Dorothy arrived, the lie of the East/West Witches being Wicked was so far ingrained into the Ozian pcysh that everyone believed it).

"However, the musical is an adaptation of an adaptation of an original novel. So, in reality, it should be viewed as an entity of it's own and not part of the original and subsequent storyline."

Not if you take in with a grain of salt the belief that each tale is simply the same story retold in the point of view chosen by the writer ("Wicked" was from Elphie's side of the story and "The Wonderful Wizard" was from Dorothy's eyes).

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

michiruokami In reply to TherealRNO [2007-05-08 20:10:15 +0000 UTC]

I'd forgotten that Elphaba made Fiyero's memory vanish. I cant say I'm an expert, I've only read Wicked once, so I forget details now and then.
I agree with you completely, each story should be taken with a grain of salt, because it is perspective. As well as interpertation of a story. I happen to like all three stories very much. Regardless of how they intersect each other.
