Description
Well this is part one of my lineart tutorial. This tutorial is all about how to extract ink lineart from paper white. You'll need a inked lineart in order to begin this tutorial-Heres a link to the finished product of this tutorial: [link]
-There'll be a second lineart tutorial to follow which will be about how to do digital lineart
*Note* To download this tutorial, click the "download" button to the left side of the preview picture
*Note* This tutorial assumes you know the basics of Adobe Photoshop CS2. Please don't post comments asking things such as "How do I create a layer?" or "Wheres the eraser?" or "How do I arrange layers?". If you need the answers to those...Look for a "Photoshop for beginners" guide in google

I love your sketch! (Even though I know it's just a preview image ) It's so beautiful! The finished version is really pretty too!
I really want to try this! (I just wish my drawing was as detailed and controlled as yours.)

helpp!
it doesn't work DD:
i have my line art
and then i did what u did
then i filled in the bg black
and pasted it
but instead of it appearing like it does in your tut, the original picture covers over it..
what do i do?

I think you most likely havent seperated the lineart from the white in the layer. To do that the easy way.. just have the lineart layer on the very top and switch the layer mode to "multiply"
The layer mode can be found in the layer window, and it'll be "normal" for each layer by default

sorry for late reply
okay then
i will try that oo
but i also figured out how to use the pen tool
so maybe i can use that to make line art too xDD

ah, thank you! i have been trying to do this for a long time XD i never thought of cutting/pasting the line-art itself onto a new layer~ i ink pretty neatly so cleaning up should be easy. . but question! it seems like there were a few smudges on the hair in your drawing; do you not care about minor things like that or . .? just wondering ^^

Thanks for reading the tutorial XD;
Umm, I rarely use this technique myself to do my linearts. You'll see the title says Tutorial 01. There was suppose to be a 02 that followed, which would have been the technique that I use XD; (I lineart digitally in photoshop).
Whenever I use inked lineart I'm usually in a rush, so I usually dont bother with minor details unless its on the face or something XD;
Merry christmas btw

Very useful tutorial.
I didn't knew the function of the mask tool until I read this. Now I have a great alternative to digital inking
Thanks a lot.

This tutorial seems to be missing some step somewhere? Am I meant to read it left to right top to bottom?

First off, thanks for the tutorial (though I have made lineart, it was anime though...and I need all the tutorials I can find)! You rock!
Second, is it ok to use a noninked drawing...I don't ink my drawings much if not ever. I'm picky as hell and even if I consider myself done, I'm not all that good at tracing (so-so I guess) and I don't like messing with my drawing (unless its on the computer or with a pencil).

Wow haha XD! Glad to hear my tutorial helped out so much
At first I honestly didn't think this tutorial covered enough points, but if I expanded it more it would take too much space XD;
Glad to hear its doing its job the way it is !!

First off I just wanted to say that the tutorial is awesome. I did notice something a little strange though... in the second part of the tutorial you're missing step 3. @.@ lol. It goes from filling in the background to switching the transparency... which of course makes perfect sense... but the numbers are wierd. Thanks for the tutorial though! It was alot of help. ^.^

Nice process , thanks for sharing.
Not sure if you've tried this before, but if you use gradient (with black and white as your fore and background color) along with brightness/contrast you may get a pretty decent result. It's an even lazier/quicker way, though of course it doesn't get rid of the paper textures/smudges as well.
If your lineart is neat enough on paper you can avoid cleaning up altogether by scanning in black and white.

MightyLeafy In reply to archvermin [2007-07-13 02:48:40 +0000 UTC]
Thanks for looking through
Oh yeah, now that you mention it, that could work XD! But then, I only clean up the smudges around the face anyways. Gradient might be too much for delicate areas XD;
Gah, thats why I like doing lineart digitally..But then..its so hard to ink on photoshop ........
