Description Another SW RPG character. This time an Arkanian offshoot gene spliced commando. I was frustrated to realize that some of my pervious builds were not entirely within the rules, that combined with my inability to properly characterize my last character caused me to consider a vastly different build. We also had a change of two characters. We lost our useless noble and retard jedi for a useful noble and a faceman scoundrel. So I decided to run a rifle commando build with Farscape's Aeryn Sun as a basis for mannerisms and voice. With my last attempt I ended up with an unworkable mix of Aeryn and Jool's voices and problems mixing personality types. A commando is a much simpler personality to run. I was going to run a skill monger with a variety of abilities but I figured I would be better off just running a straight forward soldier to function as a boost to party firepower. As an added bonus I decided to take a level of scoundrel so she can be trained in Acrobatics and thus tumble out of melee combat without provoking an attack of opportunity and just keep on shooting.

I figured Arkanians would be perfect since they are an arrogant race which likes genetic manipulation and who tried to supply the empire with super soldiers to replace casualties in the clones the Kaminoans made. They are as close to the Peacekeepers as anybody other than the Empire would be. The best news is tha tI may have a chance to play more since our new player is an experienced GM and willing to take turns running sessions.

Outfit is pretty good! Looks like a real commando. Especially I really like the blaster rifle, did you completely copied or designed yourself?

She is left-handed! Yahoo!

Thanks. The rifle design is actually a Peacekeeper Pulse Rifle from the series Farscape. Starwars rifles tend to be modified M-16s and I wanted a bullpup design for this one.

It's one of the most popular Sci-Fi series for a good reason. Among other things it's quite funny, featuring an American "everyman" type in the midst of an otherwise all Australian cast. He makes a lot of American Pop Culture references (which nobody else gets), and it's even funnier when the rest of the crew tries to use some of his phrases and messes them up spectacularly. It's got action, adventure, romance, loads of aliens, and an underdog crew trying to save their necks from a militant alien race and what begins to shape into a massive intergalactic war.

Unfortunately this series is not so popular around here. Nobody has heard before..

Well it was originally on Australian TV before they dropped it and Sci-fi Channel picked it up in America. Even then it got canceled after only 4 seasons despite doing more to increase female viewership for sci-fi in America than any other show on TV and having a large rabid fanbase.

If something is not so popular in Europe, also not popular here. However we have some US influence, here a channel called "cnbc-e" in evenings only shows American TV shows and series. Even there I havent seen.
BTW they show great TV series. Scenarists have an awesome imagination.

So then do you get a lot of imported European reality TV. I know we get a lot of that (especially with the writer's guild strike earlier and the actor's strike coming soon).

Oh yep, we heard that writer's guild strike. But we have not idea what happened.. Can you enlight me about the happenings? Why they went to strike?

The Writer's Guild's contract was expiring and they wanted to get more royalties from online distribution (which their previous contract did not deal with specifically) and when studios were not willing to give them as much as union leaders wanted the union declared a strike for months until the Directors' Guild convinced them to play nice. In the meantime networks had to cancel series and studios had to postpone or can movies and many writers went bankrupt and other studio staff got laid off. The end result is (as always with unions) more money for fewer people and the little guys get screwed.

No, just that the Writers', Actors', and Directors' guilds all have their contracts expire this year.

I was going to say that it looked a lot like Farscape fanart, very Peacekeeper, and then I read the description. I didn't know that SW had any humanoid alien species. Actually the first time I watched SW ever I just assumed that they were ALL aliens since it is prefaced with "Long long ago in a Galaxy far away..." So I figured, "long ago" and far away were relative to our own time and galaxy, therefore since humans have not yet begun to colonize other worlds, much less other galaxies, then they must all be aliens. But then I was thrown off when SW episode one came out and they referred to Anakin as being human. How is that possible I figured? So then I just assumed all the humanoid beings were human. I guess I assumed incorrect, or does your information come from the game? What sources of Cannon are there to draw on besides the movies and what allows those sources to be authoritative?

Star Wars has several dozen "near-human" species many of which are only culturally or pigmentally different from baseline humans. Most info comes from the Expanded Universe which occasionally leaks into Lucas' work but is generally internally consistent for SW novels, games, comics, etc. Arkanians typically have white eyes and black or while hair with four fingered hands but they are geneticists (among other things) and have subspecies which are indistinguishable from humans. Echani are also physically similar to humans except for white hair and that all offspring of a particular pairing are genetically identical. The Chiss are physically human but with blue skin. The books suggest that most near human species have common ancestors from way back before the Infinite Empire, long before the Old Republic. And that much of the differentiation is the result of genetic alteration not unlike what the Arkanians have done to themselves and several other species. It is my understanding that pretty much everything in the EU is Cannon unless Lucas says otherwise. After all, he created numerous continuity errors in his own movies so it's not like he has much right to complain anyhow. Star Wars does not have alternate continuities like Marvel or DC does so everything is supposed to be in the same continuity unless it is declared otherwise. The Star Wars Wiki (wookiepedia) has a lot of information from various EU sources (all cited) and it does denote any entries of questionable cannon. Aside from buying a lot of books it's your best bet at finding that kind of information.

Strange man. Haha, wookiepedia. That's pretty funny. It's weird how Lucas allowed so many people to have creative rights to his creation. He is far less stingy then I would have been. If it were me I would say, "only my stuff is cannon, the rest of you all are just making fan fiction." Unless of course he gets a cut of all that fan fiction material published. I don't know...

The answer is most likely a simple one, money. Licensing and giving up creative control have made him a large steady stream of income above and beyond royalties for the two trilogies.

I guess. I dont keep up with all that other stuff though, to me only the movies count. I'm not a big enough nerd I guess.

Lucas is certainly not the best writer working on the Star Wars Universe, nor is he the most prolific. But at the end of the day he still gets paid no matter who fleshes out his universe.

spontaneous is perhaps the best way to come up with something.

For me the creative process may be somewhat spontaneous, but the way I craft the ideas which come from it is methodical and deliberate. In a pinch I do have a large collection of writer's aids to allow me to piece characters and scenarios together without inspiration (though that process generally gets the creative juices flowing since limitations and boundaries are a key element of creativity).
