Description *edit* I decided to shade the pic, fix her left eye and add her signature weapon, her axe, which which she at second level has a (non crit) max damage rating just shy of the max hit points of the toughest characters in the party.

So, after giving up on running a Twi'lek or a human scoundrel I decided that since the rest of the party is multi-classing into Soldiers or Jedi but only doing ranged combat I might enjoy going in a different direction without going all non-combat. I though, let's go MELEE! So I got the idea to run a Mandalorian warrior. The Mandalorians are an ideologically based loose organization of clans who follow the code of the Mandalorians.

This character would be plain compared to my other ideas but having a pragmatic, honorable (even if it is by the harsh Mandalorian standards), and melee oriented character is such a huge contrast from the rest of the party. Even though everybody has at least one level of combat class character they are mostly, small, weak, and cowardly individuals who use pistols. This one will carry a rifle with a power weapon as a bayonet and a power axe and will use heavy armors. I'll probably add a jetpack soon also and maybe a flamethrower as Mandalorians (think Bobba Fett) like them a lot. Where it not for out scout she would be the the tallest, the second heaviest (by body weight) and by far the strongest. She's strong enough to carry almost any two of them (and her strength ain't all that high). It will be interesting to see how the coward Jedi Agricultural Corps members and pacifist Jedi deal with a Mandalorian. The Scout will probably be fine with her and I doubt the mid level crime boss scoundrel would be bothered (unless she made her opinion of him abundantly clear). I still have to figure out how I want to run her ideologically. I need a better worked out world view than what Wookiepedia can give me.

Star Wars, Twi'lek, Mandalorian, Jedi, Bobba Fett, etc are trademark of George Lucas etc.

One thing you could try for the character is taking the Japanese bushido code and borrowing from that.

I find that rather overdone. When I was in highschool forever ago they were novel but now everybody does them and in Star Wars the Jedi already borrow heavily from samurai and the Jedi are always trying to annihilate the Mandalorians. The Mandalorians were modeled after the Predators. They are clan based warriors but they're also almost universally hated/feared by the rest of the galaxy so they have to pick carefully what battles they revel in.

When it comes to codes of conduct I prefer less common ones. I like the Scorpion Clan from L5R where they wear masks and deceive everybody but consider themselves the most honest because they never technically lie and they "wear their masks on the outside". Or the Vodacce from 7th Sea where they can be family men while having mistresses and men of honor while engaging in treacherous political actions. Bushido does not seem alien to anybody anymore and its not as tricky to play anymore.

Eh it was a thought, since you're familiar with L5R I'd recommend the Dragon Clan which is a bit of a personal fav out of there.

Sorry, I shouldn't have unloaded on you like that. I suppose I have a touch of indie in that when I like something obscure and it becomes mainstream it loses a lot of my interest.

My personal favorite clans are the Crane and the Scorpion. The Crane have that enigmatic eastern warrior aesthetic and the Scorpion take a very skilled and clever player. I think the best Star Wars equivalents would be the Echani for the Crane and the Arkanians for the Scorpion. Mandos are probably more like the Crab.

I like the idea of having a warrior with a strong code of honor that conflicts with the honor of other more traditional warriors. When the tactician meets the romantic warrior's challenge with a stealthy pistol shot you end up with a lot of roleplaying fodder.

No problem, it happens. I always liked the Dragon since you never saw them that often in the fiction, but when you do you know something big is going to happen.

That could well be. I only played a handful of convention games and a little bit of the card game so most of what I know came from skimming and older edition of the rulebook. At the time my group was much more into 7th Sea and we ran that about 3/4 of the time with touches of Starwars RCR, D&D 3.5, and a handful of other things.

Yeah 7th Sea is one of the few I haven't played, everyone was busy playing L5R. Not a bad situation though.

All the 7th Sea stuff is out of print but last time I checked you can get PDFs of all the books from RPGnow for half the cover price (which is nice since hardcovers sell for up to 10 times cover). I love 7th Sea. It may not have a flaws system but I think it was an improvement over Wick's previous work on L5R and it was a great system for roleplaying. The backgrounds and virtues/hubris(es?) work very well for causing everybody to play interesting characters and the drama dice encourage a lot of crazy cinematic stuff. I really love the system. It's rolled and kept dice mechanic pretty much covered any task resolution situation you could come up with and the rules were very simple compared to most of the games I play. I may have cut my teeth on AD&D but 7th Sea was my first true (RPG) love.

Yeah I remember some people had gotten 7th Sea books and they loved them, too bad that one had to go by the wayside though.

I know what you mean, my current groups seem damn near scared to venture away from D&D. The worst part is anything I want to play I have to friggin run in order to do anything with them.

mindflenzing In reply to LoneStranger [2010-02-20 07:51:16 +0000 UTC]

Exactly. I can't even get players to run one off games in systems they know. Living Forgotten Realms is about the first time I found OTHER people who would run anything. Sadly, now they are making me DM modules too.

LoneStranger In reply to mindflenzing [2010-02-24 01:05:21 +0000 UTC]

I know how that is, worst part is I wouldn't mind a full campaign of some of the games I'd like.

Also I think people want me to run a campaign I have no ideas for too.

mindflenzing In reply to LoneStranger [2010-02-24 01:40:07 +0000 UTC]

Sometimes you need a good idea to use. I pull from some of the podcasts I listen to for ideas. My last campaign was a planescape one. I heard about a world where fragments of other worlds connected like inside a snow globe and used it as a platform to recycle movie plots like from Conan The Destroyer. I'm looking at the possibility of a military or time traveling campaign next year after I finish my classes.

I'd go for the military campaign, not a fan of time travel myself.

mindflenzing In reply to LoneStranger [2010-02-24 02:14:52 +0000 UTC]

Time travel is hard to do well but if heroes were in a situation where there were rifts to certain key time periods where they could effect the future with some sort of energy like in Feug Shui (by Robin Laws) or if they were being lead on a chase through time with a purpose like in the Legacy of Kain series I think it could be a blast. Maybe even something like Eternal Darkness where they experience life as past heroes in critical events leading up to a final battle where their successes and failures determine what resources they have for the final fight.

For a military campaign I like the idea of them starting off as faceless mooks and see how the other side lives. Then after watching the rest of their regiment destroyed, taking refuge in a Necropolis where they fall back to a tomb of forgotten heroes. They sort of fuse with the restless spirits of those heroes. As the campaign goes on they begin to become recognized as heroes themselves but the more they embrace powers of these heroes the more they begin to lose themselves to these spirits. In the end they must decide how much of themselves they are willing to sacrifice for the power to save their world. It would be interesting to see how a bunch of writers/drama people would handle it. Would they be like Teal'c from SG-1, like Dax from DS9, would they appear to have Disassociative Disorder, or would they be completely subsumed by the new personality in time.

LoneStranger In reply to mindflenzing [2010-02-26 08:08:01 +0000 UTC]

Yeah the time travel one can work in certain circumstances but it is hard as hell to do.

The military campaign sounds interesting, what happens if one guy doesn't want to bond with a spirit?

mindflenzing In reply to LoneStranger [2010-02-26 16:30:05 +0000 UTC]

Roleplaying consequences. I'll describe how it effects the way the character feels and maybe even looks and then describe and failures they make in terms of the hero. It wouldn't be fair to penalize a hero beyond the occasional appropriate -2 circumstantial penalty for a roleplaying choice after all.

Semi-random question. How did Sancho meet her fist husband and what species was he and the jedi that became her second. also what species was her adopted kid?

mindflenzing In reply to Nehmeahosis [2008-05-21 12:35:52 +0000 UTC]

Her first husband was a childhood friend of hers from her clan. He was one of those sly ruggedly handsome humans. The Jedi Master who was the second was an old Cerean who was more interested in the "jackpot" of big destinies than anything else. The child she adopted was a young (6rys) Zabrak who she took off the streets of Courescant and raised as her own.

I felt the need to have her carrying her signature one hit kill axe. And it definitely makes her look more like a warrior than a soldier compared to the rifle.

The blades are wild. Were you inspired at all be yt Mandaolrian/Clone trooper exclusives at entertainment earth? That had a couple female Mandalorians.

mindflenzing In reply to RobinsArtist [2008-04-13 16:11:28 +0000 UTC]

The bayonet is a fairly common knife design, the axe on the other hand I spent hours trying to find something wicked looking, somewhat crude but with a touch of elegance, and without looking like it's compensating for something. Let me tell you, that's a tall order for an axe. I decided that a slender curved blade with a gap would have presence with less mass and gives more options for gripping it.

I had not heard about those figures till you mentioned it to me, however the red one looks a lot like one of the minigame figures I have. The funny thing is that I did not realize the Mandalorian was a she until a couple of other figures I orded came in and I began to realize that any slim figures spread legs are female (I could not get high quality images for the minifigs). Those figs though, look pretty sweet. After I get my next paycheck I may have no choice but to get them.

RobinsArtist In reply to mindflenzing [2008-04-14 01:56:13 +0000 UTC]

Well, you found a good model for that axe. That figure set is pretty cool--once upon a time they would have been a must have, but I've been cutting back collecting a bit--for space reasons even more than fundage.

All the better to kill Jedi with. I think I will make it that after Order 66 she killed one or two before the war ended. That would probably lead to some interesting situations with a half jedi party.

It looks pretty sweet.

Mandalorian.. I love them, they are great warriors. Armor design is cool. Your female Mandalorian is pretty good. Have you ever played KOTOR-II? In that game, I helped Mandalorians and jedis both. I am not a jedi order supporter.

Mandalorians are great. I've played both KotOR games. I love em. I strongly dislike the Jedi Council (in any time period). I'd be tempted to like the Sith except that they are more like Jedi outcasts with a chip on their shoulders rather than a genuine alternative. I think the Jensarri have a much better path as they are not just a knee jerk reaction to Jedi stupidity.

Egek In reply to mindflenzing [2008-04-14 09:33:17 +0000 UTC]

During KOTOR, I didnt try to be sith but naturally became one of them. Actually I was a bit above the neutral. If you dont behave like an angel you easily gain dark points. (BTW I find dark forces better, they are more offensive) I helped people according to my benefits and conscience. In fact if you look to Expended Universe, jedis are not angels of goodness.

mindflenzing In reply to Egek [2008-04-14 13:04:33 +0000 UTC]

For me I will help people and generally be tolerant of them but if you cross me you'll probably be found floating face down. I don't like the lack of neutral statements. Instead of telling Bastilla a bunch of council drivel I would rather have used the , "I'm freakin' Revan and I'm still much stronger. Serve me."

Egek In reply to mindflenzing [2008-04-20 14:49:27 +0000 UTC]

It is bad while playing you have to behave according to story. Sometimes I want to reject something but game does not give permission.
I havent played KOTOR-I, this is a great loss. I should play..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mindflenzing In reply to Egek [2008-04-20 18:18:32 +0000 UTC]

The problem is, the more intricate the story, the fewer options you have to effect it. In KotOR your choices really boil down to Darkside and Lightside. I would like to see more than a good/evil axis for alignment like the individual/collective "lawful/chaotic" axis from D&D where you can run the Robin Hood type who is treated and acts different from the Paladin type.

I bought a used X-Box just so I could pick up dirt cheap copies of KotOR I and II (which actually cost about as much as buying them both for my computer). They are great games and I love em.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Egek In reply to mindflenzing [2008-04-23 13:17:14 +0000 UTC]

Yes, me too. Individual/collective sounds better.
Once I played with a paladin according to D&D rules and after a few hours DM left the game! He said I cannot be a paladin with walking over dead bodies and injured villagers.

X-box? Cool! My brother has playstation 2, however I am not so good at playing games on these machines. I find PC better.

mindflenzing In reply to Egek [2008-04-23 13:25:47 +0000 UTC]

I generally ran Neutral/Good characters. As long as you didn't do evil stuff your GM rarely got on your tail about your alignment. Some day, though, I'd love to try running a Lawful/Neutral(or evil) Nihilistic Paladin. He believes in an ordered society and justice but he also believes that life is suffering and that death is often the best solution to social problems. I'd love to see a group react to a character which is somewhat evil while being civic and well behaved. Our paladin got in trouble for murdering unarmed orcish women and children, abandoning his allies because he didn't want to wade through a sewer, and wussing out in front of a high priest of his deity. He got two warnings and an extra sidequest to "redeem himself" which just netted him extra XP and loot. We all hated the paladin.

They did release KoTOR for Mac and PC (PC being much cheaper, which is why I got a better deal buying an X-Box to play it on).

Wow.. That paladin is really bad guy.
I played with a classic paladin and DM selected me as the worst paladin in the history.
