Description
Tutorial took me about three hours to do, mainly because I had to write the tutorial out. XDThis was drawn mainly cause there were no tutorials on how to draw Sea Foam (That I could find) using Photoshop. I've had some minor experience when I was learning how to Oil paint with my grandma three years ago at how sea foam is made using real paint, but a brush loaded with paint and daubed around didnt quite work right on photoshop. So, while working on a picture that I have been practicing for (those who watch me have seen sneak peeks -- it involves my tropical water dragon Alohuaki), I played around and lucked out on my first attempt of making it. The technique made me squee in joy. One of my friends told me they wanted to know how to do it since they had been trying for a while, so I figured "I need to share this with the world, since there doesnt seem to be anything about it here in Deviantart.
Please enjoy the tutorial, and if you learn from it and use the technique, why not post your picture here? I'd love to see it!

If you have photoshop, its easy -- Take a color, usually a grey or greyed color, and make a big blotch. Then, take the burn tool and burn it till it looks rocky.

XD Thanks! Its amazing how easy it is, but how hard it was the think of. I've experimented so many times with trying to make seafoam that I almost felt helpless. The idea came to me while looking at lots of seafoam pictures for a picture I was working on before my graphic computer died on me. (Its now sitting in my portable harddrive, waiting patiently for my computer to get out of the shop.)
XD I smacked my forehead too before dancing for joy when I figured it out, since it was just... So simple, yet took forever to figure it out. And since there were no tutorials on it, I figured I'd share it so people wouldnt have to go through so as much trouble as I have to figure out how to do it.

XD I try to make a tutorial whenever I find a Nitch that hasnt been filled.. Like Pixel fur or sea foam -- I have a paint style bubble tutorial in the making, the kind I used in this picture , since the only other tutorials for bubbles were premade bubble brushes in a more cartoony style then "Painting" style and looked out of place when around a lot of semi-realisim detail.

You said that already, I looked at your stuff, and replied. XD No pity, I just think your underestimanting your own abilities and holding yourself back because of your feelings of your own art. You get better with Practice, not with natural talent.. If it was natural talent alone Id still be drawing chickens in blue hats, cause I wouldnt get any better because the talent I was born with got fine tuned with lots of practice. LOTS of practice.

Thanks for the nice comments! Im glad you feel it will prove useful. X3 I figured I'd share what I figured out, since I was so frustrated trying to find an Ocean tutorial that was paint style or semi-realistic, rather then really cartoony.. Or non existant. I figured others would want to know how I did it, so I made the tutorial -- and I'm glad I did -- It gives me a place to refrence back to myself XD

Ooooh, I'll definately be using this. Just one thing- when light hits the water, it distorts the image underneath, causing it to look 'cut off' when it really isn't, even when at a view point like that (I've tried it while looking through goggles halfway into the water) So that might be something you want to keep in mind. (:

8D I hope it helps with anything you do. X3 And there is a reason for acknowledging the rock -- basicly I was being silly but still telling peopl that the need to understand that, even though its really flat, they need to realize the rock is there and not just part of a background. Its supposed to be a three dimensional item for the water to react to XD So, you gotta know its there. XD

Foxchibi In reply to mindsend [2006-08-18 16:37:59 +0000 UTC]
lol me too! 0.0;;
See I understand that although the rock is really flat, you need to pretend the rock is dynamic and 3-D so that it comes out pretty, but your rock, although flat, is not REALLY flat. You made it look dynamic.
Now my rock, is flat, flat on the screen, flat in real life. It goes "Kaput" and that i s why I hope the water shall make it pretty...
yes, I confused myself on your message and mine. >o< -ishastupidface-

This is a great tutorial. Isn't funny how little things crop up like this when you are making a picture. I've seen all kinds of star tutorials, and clouds, but never sea-foam. Its an important addition to a sea-picture. Its just the stuff to make it sing, especially shore to water scenes or waves. Good job.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
mindsend In reply to SmirkyLurk [2006-08-18 02:40:40 +0000 UTC]
Exactly. There needs to be more tutorials on things other then just "underwater" or "clouds" and a bunch on hair, eyes, and skin. I have nothing against those tutorials, but EVERYONE makes them D8 With very little fresh content, either.
I sort of wish this would make the front page -- it would be seen by more people, and thus help more people who would need it.
