You... hmm... you know about the "Live Trace" option, right? ...that automatically does this for you, provided your image is already fairly defined? Because with an image as clean as the one you use here, I'd imagine just the default LT would do the whole thing very nicely...
Nice tutorial, nonetheless. Very informative! ^_^b

Oops, PS, by "this" I just mean the line art. The coloring thing is te de, obviously.... and you do it so well!

Haha, yeah. I think that live trace is great (especially when I'm in a hurry and don't have time to waste!) but more often than not I just prefer to vector the lines directly...plus, I always had to do that anyway with CS and Illustrator 10 so I'm used to it! CS2 users are spoilt, lol!
It's still a very good thing to know how to do though, I think...I do a lot of freehand vectors (without an image to trace) so knowing how the lines work definitely helps!
Thanks!

Agreed. ^_^ I'll have to learn to wean myself off live trace now.... XD

In the next tutorial, can you mention gradients? I know how to do them on CS2, which is the one I have at school, but at home I have version 10, and it only lets me do black and white gradients, and its driving me totally crazy. Maybe you can clear it up a bit? Thanks very much. Great tutorial, by the way. I can't wait for the next one. Also part one and two were very good, I was satisfied.

Actually, I was debating whether to do gradients next or the pathfinder next, and I think that I'll do gradients! Luckily I have a copy of Illustrator 10 on my other computer, so I can check back and forth for reference!
My weekends are usually busier than my weekdays, so I don't know how long it'll take me to make (I need a good 5-7 hours free per tutorial) but it should be up soon!
Thanks for the nice comments!

We're starting vectors at university this year, and I was kind of worried about how hard it would be.
But this tutorial kinda makes it look less daunting! It's is going to help me a lot, thankyou so much!

this, and your part 1/2 tutorials are really helpful, even though I already know that basics!! You made them easy to read and understand, which are good qualities in tutorial-makers, or anyone else for that matter. Great job!

Wuaahhhh, no one liked my vector tutorial. Oh well. At least someone's getting their vector skillz out there for people to learn. I am an Illustrator fiend. I just wish I was better at conveying how I do things. Nice work! I wish more people would find out the glory of vector.
PS: Someone needs to ask DA to make an actual resources area for vector stuff. It's really odd that there's nothing for it. PETITION TIME!

minimonster777 In reply to bassanimation [2005-10-15 03:40:14 +0000 UTC]
I am checking out your tutorial as we speak!
Yeah, a resources area for vector tutorials would be GREAT....it's hard to pick them out of all the "miscellaneous" tutorials...and usually people just submit them to "Photoshop" tutorials!
I'll head over to the suggestions forum and drop them a line...and maybe note some admins
It is always good to find another Illustrator fiend ^_^

Sweeeet, if you give me the link to your thread I'll go and rave as well. Vector folks need support, there's so few of us, and the recognition is very hard to get. It's really cool to meet another person who uses the program similarly to how I do If you ever want to collaborate, let me know! Itd be fuuun ^_^

how much different is cs2 from cs?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
minimonster777 In reply to Vashtastic [2005-10-14 05:58:17 +0000 UTC]
Some tools are different - there is a live trace tool and a paintbucket tool in CS2, although I don't really use them. There are a few other things too, but so far I have only seen minor minor differences - mostly stuff with filters and stuff which I rarely use. So, as far as I know, not much difference.
It might be worthwhile checking out the Adobe website - maybe they have a list of all the updated features? *should have thought of it before*

I mean tto say that the paintbucket works differently in CS than in CS2. Sorry for the confusion.
