Holy crap. Even the first introduction had my head hurting. Geometry was mentioned and...ouch. Hopefully I'll be able to learn this! I want to so bad!

Well, the important things is that vectors are shapes, not pixels. That's all. Once you start thinking about SVGs as a bunch of shapes, you're gonna get all sorts of ideas.

I just picked up Photoshop CS6 the other day, and downloaded "Photoshop For Dummies" online, so I'll give that a read, so as to better understand what everything does. I want to contribute more than just writing on this site!

How do you export vectors in a high resolution from inkscape? The reason for this is because when I tried joining #MLP-VectorClub and they declined saying I needed to upload my vectors in a larger, higher resolution but the problem is I don't know how. Can you help me with that?

MisterAibo In reply to blueblitzie [2012-05-23 05:18:46 +0000 UTC]

When exporting with File -> Export Bitmap dialogue, you can change the bitmap size. Either you can adjust the resolution manually, or you can rev up the dpi. Both has the same result.

What's the best size to export?

MisterAibo In reply to blueblitzie [2012-05-23 17:02:20 +0000 UTC]

Depends, really. The Vector Club wants > 3000px on the shorter side. But a whole scene usually calls for more.

Sweet! Just what I've been looking for.

Thanks MisterAibo! Will soon be having my own pony vectors.

I really like how you set out the tuts. Extremely noob friendly and fun.

Its great and practical art you have here.

+5 interwebs to you!

Ok Proff, I have a question for you. What is the easyest way to create ponies (proprtions, size, outline, the different thickness of some lines [my hardes problem], editing) with the program Inkscape?

I've been meaning to cover technicalities throughout the first few tutorials, but I'll try to spruce up some little thing about this as soon as possible.

In a nutshell, SVG>JPG.

Deal with it...

MisterAibo In reply to Archonitianicsmasher [2012-03-12 15:20:48 +0000 UTC]

For this type of things, yes. But it should be more like SVG =/= JPG.
Plus, it's like saying PNG > JPG - png compression is lousy for things like real world and jpg compression is lousy for things with quick color changes. They all have their merits in their chosen fields.

It's nice even though I don't use SVGs, I done everything through Illustrator, and that's AI file.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MisterAibo In reply to BB-K [2012-03-12 14:24:15 +0000 UTC]

Well, .ai files are pretty hard to edit manually, from what I can gather. I think the only reason to use illustrator would be that you're so used to its user interface that you find inkscape confusing.
Plus, I guess it must offer some functionality inkscape doesn't (Adobe is behind it - they have the resources for that), or people wouldn't buy it.

Through a proper class or workshop teaching Illustrator, even the newbs of newbs should already know how to use Illustrator. My first was very painful too, particularly the Pen tool. You can't illustrate without it.

MisterAibo In reply to BB-K [2012-03-12 14:39:00 +0000 UTC]

You can learn to use any program through good tutorials, class or workshop. That's why I don't see much point in using a paid program that uses some pdf-esque file format if you can have a free editor that works with XML-based files. But I guess it's more about who gets to you first - that's why flash animation is still so prominent, even when SVG has long surpassed it in simplicity and compatibility.

SVG animation is cool and all, but I was under the apprehension that there weren't any applications that provided a ui for creating them, and the only way to do so was to edit the xml manually. Is this not true?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MisterAibo In reply to SirCxyrtyx [2012-03-12 18:09:09 +0000 UTC]

There is a plugin for inkscape (very, very much a beta version) and a few stand alone programs that can't do it very well. There's certainly nothing that can compare to flash in the field of comfortable user interface. But since making animation is about as hard as writing a tag in HTML, it can be done manually. And since any interactivity can be written in JavaScript (and it's all XML based, after all), anyone who's done some web page coding can do it.
The problem is that it's usually unappealing to "pure artist" - i.e. those who draw and can't really do anything else. But then again, so is flash animation or video editing at first. But they're forced to learn some of it eventually. But again, if you're new at all this, where will you go? Will you dabble in "big scary code", or will you buy (or indeed steal) a program that offers comfortable user interface?
Flash is quickly becoming obsolete and ultimately, those can't animate in anything else will find themselves out of their jobs. I'm not sure that SVG is the "new big thing", but it's growing in popularity. It's simple, the basic structure of both graphics and animation is the same, it can be integrated into web pages seamlessly and it requires no third party plugins to run.
But sadly, no comfortable editor to make the animation in.

Err, I've been through college and I studied graphic. Although I was meant to take up culinary, but graphic was so easy and I took advantage of it. Today I possessed the skills while I work as, *cough*, an insurance clerk.

So I have what I need, you see my illustrations are based on that, and don't forget, Adobe also comes with other software too, hence how I did with my Flash skills.
