A slightly more theoretical beginning which I'd love to discuss and improve upon. Some things are hard to explain, damn...Related content

I like this tutorial, it's way more in depth and complexly detailed than some of the others I researched. I feel like I have a good grasp on eyes now and I'm particularly greatful for the little tid-bit on how only the females have eye lashes (My male MLP-style characters thank you, lol). My only concern atm nowΒ is weather or not I'm making the eyes too big or too small overall since I notice the MLP style tends to use very large-soulful eyes. Thank you for the tutorial, kudos on a successful teaching~

Sorry, I have no idea what could cause that.
Were you able to use those tools in the past?

yes, was fine but one day I was finishing a vector making the eyes. also in the same vector I used before so I dont know

So what does happen? You can't use the tools at all or they don't do anything or what?

The object's opacity could be set to zero. You can check that in the fill and stroke dialogue (ctrl + shift + f).
It could be other things, but this seems most likely.

Frankly, the way inkscape uses the last opacity setting - but only sometimes - can be somewhat confusing. I'm glad to have helped.

Hey, thanks for this.. took a couple hours of trial and error (probably because I'm making a Derpy) but I finally got her some decent eyes...
of course it's a comic and now I have to eye about 4 other Derpies but at least I know how now. Thanks.

One more thing about the eye outline: Especially with more dominant eye brows I've noticed that the black eye line seems to consist of two parts in different layers: The actual top eye brow obviously is top layer, while the black eye line that is usually on the nose side of the eye belongs to the sclera layer. The important difference here is that the sclera outline and the outer black eye line form a common smooth path, thus the nose path gets smooth again.
How I do it with clipping: The sclera is a boring white box, with all the iris parts and the nose-side eye line on top. All that is clipped with the final sclera outline. On top and on bottom of that clip, the eye brow and eye lashes get placed.
My all-alone Dashy has this kind of eyes: [link]

You seem to have missed a major trick here, the use of masks. Also, there is a typo in the third sentence. But despite these issues it is a well thought out explanation that highlights all the important areas.

Believe it or not, I didn't know masks existed. But yeah, they seem incredibly useful... ground-breakingly, even. Thanks!

Besides the lack of clipping paths (masks? But I think they're two different things in Inkscape--I don't know which is easier/better), I'd just like to mention that using translucent white for the eye highlight and accent is incorrect. The eye accent (the darker stripe) and eye highlight (the lighter stripe) should be solid colors (rather than the slight gradient that they end up being with translucent white). Also, they're usually slightly more saturated and a slightly different hue than they would be with the translucent white. has color guides for the Mane 6, the princesses, the CMC, and some background ponies which include solid colors for the eye stripes.
Oh, and they don't always point outward. One notable exception is actually in your tutorial (a Twilight pic).
Other than that, it's a wonderful breakdown of everything that an artist should take into consideration when making eyes.

You're right. But I still use translucent white white because it's pretty good approximation. Sort of like using translucent black for the leg shadow. Which I do not do any more. People learn.
Not to mention it's pretty universal. When you make the eyes different colour, you'd have to change the stripes as well. And changing colour is one of the things I do often.
And yes, they don't seem to be pointing outwards every time. But I was tired and it seems like a nice general rule, again. I mean, when you create your own pony and abide by this, you probably won't say "hey, that's not right, they should go the other way". Just like you probably won't care about the slight difference in the eye strips.
It is rather lazy of me and I should have done better, but in my defence, it saves time in the long run.
And who says I've achieved perfection? I don't...

Baah, I needed this two weeks ago D:
Still, pretty awesome, it'll come in handy if I draw some more ponies some time. :3

Finally, a smartly written and comprehensive guide for eyes in Inkscape. I'm pretty sure this might be the only one on the internet.

It is rather hard issue to tackle. And it's spans well beyond ponies. I only hope the tutorial makes sense. I can't tell any more.
