Description Ever since I uploaded this mess   I've been wanting to do a proper tutorial. Of course, most of these tips are basically from Cory Loftis, but I am rather pleased with how it turned out!
Lemme know if this is helpful or not, I might do another one for legs, arms and paws.

And please, don't draw humans with animal heads anymore. It can be so much cooler than that

This is great!, all I need to learn about is legs now!

Legs are tricky! The most tricky part of the zoot anthro body I think. They have a very specific flow to them that's easy to mess up, and I still do a lot of the time.
Here's some resource from the behind-the-scenes stuff though, maybe it helps:     Credit to Cory Loftis.

I don't know if I will draw any zootopia characters, but I'm sure it will greatly help me draw better anthros

I hope it will! Zootopia has some of the finest anthro anatomy ever, in my opinion.

No problem! Anything else you might want some tips for regarding anthro anatomy?

Very helpful tips!
As for the hind legs, it can be summarized in the following way: if you put the mammal on four legs, it should look just like the real one.

MonoFlax In reply to mosgorarts [2017-06-07 17:18:03 +0000 UTC]

True! Its not the whole truth however. Thats just the anatomical part. As for drawing the legs, one thing I keep forgetting but is actually important plays into the whole "merged shapes" idea I mentioned here. The legs don't actually form a crease at the knee joint. They go in a nice swooping line instead. Propably gonna share some tips about the legs aswell.

I still like the idea of a mammal having some ancestral traces of quadrupedal locomotion in their makeup.  The hind legs tend to not be mess around with as much, aside from longer shins and greater movement if given the same joints and muscles necessary for said movement.

same tbh - its why I made this in the first place. Its basically all from Cory Loftis, but I just want to make it more common knowledge to avoid that typical "human body, animal head" trope on anthro characters. Which, to be frank, doesn't work on Zootopia characters, in my opinion.

You could sorta say it's been around for a while if you look back at earlier Disney films that tried a similar approach like Robin Hood, though at the time, it was more about caricature and retaining that approach to anthro design.  An animator I know once did a little critique about that here...
characterdesignnotes.blogspot.…

An early inspiration for that can also be traced to book from 1945, an adaptation of Reynard the Fox featuring illustrations by Keith Ward.

Loftis' designs are certainly an evolution of what was done before obviously, but certain a step in the right direction.

True! Credit where credit is due The whole style of Zootopia was inspired heavily by Robin Hood, so it makes sense they would go for a similar approach to anatomy.

True.  I just think it's nice when we get that sort of thing again after so long.

Absolutely. In my opinion, Zootopia is Disney returning to old heights - in more ways than one.

I still wish we had a Zootopia comic book series personally, if they wanted to tell stories they don't have to waste on a sequel.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MonoFlax In reply to studio-toledo [2017-06-09 01:12:24 +0000 UTC]

Well I feel its more like they would waste a cinematic sequel on a story that could equally be presented on the small screen. But I agree. I wouldn't want a series to be 3d though. Those always look kinda cheap, compared to the original. And with Zootopia a tv budget would be a huge shame because a big part of why Zootopia felt so alive was the amount of detail that went into the animation. Impossible to portray with a tv budget. Zootopia would lose all its life.

I had a true nightmare when I started to draw Nick & Judy for my Zootopia comics. My knowledge of human anatomy was almost of no use, especially when drawing their hands, their bloody animal hands, i.e., paws.

studio-toledo In reply to borba [2017-06-02 23:18:36 +0000 UTC]

I think what made what Cory Loftis' designs work is that it throws out what we've seen done with anthropomorphising animals before by going for a more what-if/evolutionary method catered to those body structures.  a lot of care and thought went into creating designs that weren't simply cribbing generic human physiques, it was very mindful of the anatomy of these species and worked around how could one simply 'evolve' if given the opportunity, how could the legs work in becoming bipedal, how could the arms and chest operate if allowing total freedom of movement in the arms was achieved, how hands could develop to allow for true grasping of objects with thumbs (except some like elephants).  It makes sense that there's still quite a bit of vestigial traits going on with the chest given how animals like foxes were was quadrupeds and didn't develop a chest the same way as a human would.  This is what I wanted to see personally since this is perhaps a far better explanation and demonstration of how this "Zoot Anthro" approach can work plausibly.

borba In reply to studio-toledo [2017-06-03 15:16:54 +0000 UTC]

I think they avoided human anatomy to help keep that "animal feel" of the characters, which is just an artistic choice. The reason we humans are, well, "humanlike" is because our evolution leads us to a bipedal position, with an erected column. If those animals really evolved to a have a similar human like bipedalism, they surely would become physically very similar to us.

studio-toledo In reply to borba [2017-06-03 16:24:23 +0000 UTC]

Perhaps it's the "animal feel" I favor the most here. I don't like them to be totally similar to us, there needs to be a distance (perhaps the reason why they go with the four finger/three toe look to these hands and feet, even though that is a classic cartoon cheat).  Yet someone I saw in one comment in the file cried "uncanny valley" even though I'm sure they had no idea what they were talking about. Yet the film does make them appear like flesh 'n blood beings the way they were rendered. There's sublte movements when they're standing still that suggests their bodies are still working internally. These characters aren't immortal, they could easily be killed if they're not careful.
