Description I got a little tired of drawing so many fair-skinned and haired characters, and so decided to do something a little different. This is a 11x20" ink, watercolor and colored pencil painting of an Indian (not American) princess and her Naga-dragon. I'm trying to find a good title for this.

(I've just uploaded a brighter version of the image. I think the original I had uploaded was too dark.)

Original now resides in a private collection.

Oh my bloody god . That's freakin' beautiful. I really love the color here, it's so vibrant. And the detail is absolutely amazing, and it's so lifelike. Wow, that Naga creature came out so awesome-ly. Damn, this picture is fantastic on all fronts. Automatic fav !

I'm a sucker for anything Indian, and nagas are one of my favorite creatures from Indian mythology (usually they have the torso of a human and the tail of a snake) the colors are great, but what really does it is the paisly and Indian patterns on the dragon.

I can't do watercolors either.

Not PURE watercolors. I'm not sure I have the patience. I'm also a little too detail oriented. For me it's the colored pencil that brings the painting to life. The watercolors just serve as a base and guideline and add glow to the painting.

One day, though, I hope to be able to do ure watercolors that I'm happy with.

This is some nice work, she does indeed fit the classic profile of a Hindu princess.. the Naga dragon looks somewhat like a cobra, which would not be inaccurate for the region..

However, the only criticism I might have is that you uploaded too small an image... perhaps if you went 800 or 900 pixels on the height instead of 576, more of the detail might show up...

Otherwise, very good work

I actually will probably try to upload a better and bigger version of this image once I get a scan that I'm truly happy with. The colors on this aren't quite as balanced to the original as I would like.

Very beautiful - I love all the little details you've focussed on, such as the patterns on the dragon's chest, and the little streams of water trickling through the rocks. Great job!

This is quite beautiful. I love the lighting and how the trees in the background have this wonderful glowing look (something I've always tried to achieve), and the soft mossy tone to the rocks. The colors really work well together, and I like the fect that you managed to do all the detail on the water and never make it look blue. It gives the piece a really realistic feel, and helps you believe all the more that you really are looking at a dragon sitting there, and not just a picture of one.

The details on the dragon are great, and the scales too! *gasps* Oh joy! The cloth of the woman's sari (it looks like a sari, anyway) seem a bit stiff where they wrinkle, but really, it's such a great piece it doesn't deserve that kind of critique.

A wonderful painting, great job!

P.S. Congratulation on the Daily Deviation, now you shall be famous and swamped with crazed art lovers wanting to worship you! Have fun!

I kind of developed the idea for how I made the trees glow when I did Lady Greensleeves. I'd recently bought a book of movie poster art by Drew Struzan - whose work I've loved for years- and he sometimes does this thing with adding a line of bright color around something he wants that type of effect on. I tried it on my trees and it works SO WELL!!

It's something so simple, that really shouldn't work, but it does.

You're right about the sari being a little too stiff. And actually, there should also be a shadow where the skirt droops down a little before being picked up again by the lower coil of the snake. However, I'm not sure that it would have worked quite right with the composition. I was afraid that the shadow would have been too horizontal and distracting, so I didn't put it in.

Truly Great Artworx!! I like the combination of the princess with a Naga there. And the colour of the painting is simply beautyful!! The Naga in my homeland,Indonesia (Bali), has funnier shape.

Since I can only work several hours at a time on Tuesday evenings and Saturdays with some work on Sundays- with spots of activity every other evening during the rest of the week -what I've been doing is working on the drawings for paintings on Sundays and Mondays, then working on the paintings on Tuesdays and Saturdays and whenever I can during the rest of the week. I try to complete a major painting every other week, with a smaller one each week in-between - I do drawings for the bigger ones while I work on the smaller ones.

Which means I usually do a painting in about a week of dedicated work, but can't usually do two big ones in a row.

I know I won't be able to keep up this pace forever, but I'm enjoying it for now.
