Description
So, about 25 or so hours overall, colours done in Photoshop CS3.Feel free to ask questions, I'll try to answer them.
Final piece is here -
with some others.
NOTE: this isn't a tutorial as such; i worked out a pretty solid method while working on these illustrations (I ended up producing more than 20 of them) but I've since changed my process a fair bit and always continue to experiment, but either way I hope it's helpful.
Enjoy!

Hey Luke, is there anything particular you look after when you do the silhouettes? Yours always seem to be so ... lively!

I want to ask something.. I always get confused and wasted by lineart. How did you do yours? I can see it's digital, but manually with a pen tablet or did you use the photoshop's pen tool?

This linework was done in sketchbook pro but these days I just use photoshop; either way it's pretty similar, I use a tablet and a basic round brush - vector / pen tool lines are far too laborious, especially to go with a detailed painting like this.

Oh, thanks xD
I just asked 'cause I'm having a little trouble with the lineart. I recently got a tablet but wasn't able to pratice with it a lot.

Yeah, having a tablet is completely essential to the digital painting I do
does take a while to get used to it though

I'm confused as to howw your getting perfect 'colouring within the lines'...
Are you useing the quick mask for every individual section? Because I've found it to be a pain to go throw and flat colour every section too only say to myself "there, a whole day of tedious colouring flats done......now what...ooh damn I have no idea what I'm doing"

Mr--Jack In reply to Nexsusthenewb [2010-08-19 05:47:49 +0000 UTC]
Well the short answer is I'm not
The main silhouette is done using the magic wand and then the rest of the 'flats' are fairly roughly painted in actually - it's just that at this small size they look tighter than they are. I didn't really use the quick mask or other selection tools that much while painting generally since (at least on the 'Jack, the background is a different story) it's mostly straight painting and not much gradient work and that sort of thing.
Because I know that I'm going to be painting over the top of everything (even with the background) to clean it up you don't have to be so paranoid about getting your flats right. (Especially I guess on a piece like this with only a few basic colours.)

That's one of the few times that I use a brush that's not at 100% opacity, but I usually just paint it in.
Thanks!

I loved the way you made these jacks, and loved them more when you showed on how to make them!
But I have a small question: any tips on making the tight lines and how do i make the lines more discrete when i paint the illustrations?

Well on these working at a higher resolution always helped to get things tighter; and just taking your time with it.
Thanks!

Mr--Jack In reply to HolyMane [2010-08-17 05:16:25 +0000 UTC]
as in the brush setting? Not really, no - opacity with pen pressure has always done enough for me.
At some point I might
