Description
253 Million+700.000 Years PE
The gibrilla is one of the last simagibs. They are living in the last subtropical forests ( those are almost temperate by now) of serina. Those forests are located on serinarcta near the equator. The gibrillas are indeed a relic species. Once their kind was much more widespread, now they are restricted to a small band around the equator.
The gibrilla is one of the smartest simagibs, about as smart as typical boras are. They live in groups, recognise other individuals, care for their young and communicate with each other with various calls.
The adults are doing just fine, as they huddle together in the increasingly cold nights, but the young are more susceptible to the cold. Oftentimes they die despite huddling together with the others.
The gibrillas simply cannot survive freezing nights. Their ancestors were a tropical species, so they never evolved to withstand the cold until in the recent few million years. Their skin, which is usually black (thanks to chromatophores) to absorb sunlight, and subcutaneous fat layers(which can´t be too big, because then the gibrillas would become too heavy, bulky and slow) are simply insufficient to protect against the changing climate, as they lack other structures to retain heat such as hair or feathers.
Nowadays they number barely a few thousand, and their range has fragmented. In less than a few thousand years they will be no more.
Despite this, they will not be forgotten entirely, a near sophont (maybe fully sophont?) species has taken interest in them…
The Proto-Woodcrafters are fascinated by them and have some simple stories about them.
More than one million years later(likely much earlier, but this is not known) , they would make topiaries of those legendary, social, mischievous and warmth loving six legged creatures.
