Description Well.  I do love maps.  And this is one I drew mainly to guide me through Episode I of my upcoming comic Lift.  It shows the main scene of the action: the Eastern Coast of North America, Southern Canada and the Northern Caribbean.  Maps always get the imagination running I find.

So what is Lift if I may ask?

It’s a dieselpunk adventure aimed at the YA audience, set in an alternate version of the early 1940s where World War I is still going on in Europe. As a side effect, a power struggle is playing out in North America between various competing interests over the future of the Free Cities, the remnants of a once thriving mercantile confederacy on the East Coast.

So does the US not exist?

It does, but it’s called the United State.

At some point in the near future, I hope to have enough time to devote to my comics - at the moment I'm barely touching the ground and can hardly keep all my commitments in line.

It does have a similar Dieselpunk flavor, for sure. But it's a rather different world.

So are the city-states still part of the USA?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MrAverage In reply to Bolo42 [2016-01-02 18:13:12 +0000 UTC]

Partly.  The United State and the City-States voluntarily associate and have a long history of cooperation, but they are technically independent of each other.  Strictly speaking, the United State is a league of city-states that banded together to form a larger government, gradually turning into a single large country as the territories merged.  This dates back to the Revolution - originally there was no United State, only dozens of small city-states, but the majority joined the United State and gave up their autonomy over the years, or merged with other city-states for protection and trade benefits.

Only the thirteen strongest of the original seventy or eighty city-states remain.  They have their own governments (or lack thereof, depending on your point of view) and militias, and trade with each other and internationally under what they call "laissez-faire," which is their version of neutrality.
