Description I admit that the three-tone scheme I used here is not my own invention. I got the idea from *Shimmering-Sword [link] who used the technique very successfully, and more skillfully, on some BattleTech tank designs. But I thought the look was so damned effective that I used it on a piece of my own.

This, kids, is what happens when there is no World War II, and atomic bombs aren't invented until the 1970's: conventional warfare goes to seed. At least, that's what happened in the world of my online Graphic Novel, 6-Commando. [link]

Here we see one of the sister formations to the eponymous military unit of the story. This is 4-Commando, and they operate in Somalia, which is part of the East African Disrecognized Zone. And with them is their Autonomous Armored Vehicle, a robotic "Rumbler" tank with no crew, named Victor-Three-Victor. Victor was "born" at the Nordyne Defense Dynamics plant in Calgary, Alberta on December 14, 1996, and he has been with 4-Commando ever since. He is not to be trifled with. He represents the apex of United Nations Alliance tank and artificial intelligence technology. Victor is capable of withstanding atomic blasts, and in the event of loss of command and control, can continue to operate on his own for up to three years, or until his ammunition supplies are depleted.

It’s just a colloquial expression in English - when a plant goes to seed it drops all of its seeds as widely as it can to grow as much of itself as possible, regardless of where the seeds land. It’s an expression meaning β€œto do something randomly and indiscriminately in an unplanned way just for the sake of doing as much as possible.”

Once upon a time, I guess they were, but they really have more in common with Laumer's BOLOs. And yes, this guy is Victor, who has had a, let's say, "malfunction."Β  Although that's really relative, isn't it?

I'm afraid not. Β They do have robots, but they're primarily utility and support units, not Mobile Armored Strongpoints. Β The FSR has had a lot of difficulty with artificial intelligence and gel data systems, which the UNA has mastered as part of their Rumbler program.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Comet9 In reply to MrAverage [2020-01-28 16:32:28 +0000 UTC]

gel data?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MrAverage In reply to Comet9 [2020-01-28 17:35:58 +0000 UTC]

The UNA developed a synthetic protein called 2-4 desoxypolyribotransistorase in the late 1980s that changes shape on the molecular level when electrical current is applied, allowing it to record what is effectively a β€œ1” or a β€œ0” based on its shape. By shooting a current into the gel you can record information in it selectively, allowing very dense storage of information. The result is called a β€œgel” computer because the protein looks like a clear box with a vat of bluish protein gelatin in it.

DeathlessLegends13 In reply to MrAverage [2014-11-09 15:09:16 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm, So their advantage is stereotypically larger numbers and a massive tank fleet, am I correct (not even going to touch the Nuclear side of things)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MrAverage In reply to DeathlessLegends13 [2014-11-09 15:25:34 +0000 UTC]

I wouldn't say either side has an advantage. Β The UNA has more complex computers, more advanced aircraft, better armor and engines. Β The FSR has generally higher industrial capacity, more extensive natural resources, more advanced electromagnetic weapons, more manpower resources to draw upon. Β The FSR simply prefer more easily-maintained and reliable weapons over the higher technology of the the UNA. Β Some members of the Politburo advocated a crash program to produce an FSR Rumbler, but the cost seemed to them excessive when they could produce far more better-tested conventional weapons for the money.

Also, nuclear weapons are a new invention in the 6-Commando universe, having only been discovered in 1974. Β The FSR has about half as many nuclear weapons as the UNA (that is to say, Atomic weapons), but the UNA has them decentralized. Β While in the FSR only the Russian People's Federative Socialist Republic is allowed to possess the Bomb, in the UNA, the United States, Canada, Mexico, Cuba, Japan, Australia, and South Africa all have them, in varying numbers. Β So their nuclear command is more decentralized.

But let's be honest, that's what the real comparative advantage for the Soviet was, as well: while NATO weapons were individually more effective and technically sophisticated, they were fewer in number. Β Also, the Soviet was preparing to fight a war on his own doorstep, while NATO, especially the US and Canada, had to get over an ocean first. Β And the Soviet just couldn't match for numbers or accuracy the American, British and French nuclear arsenals until well into the early 1980s, and the race to keep up in nuclear strength bankrupted his society.

MrAverage In reply to mars1812 [2017-10-10 00:36:51 +0000 UTC]

The FSR never built a Rumbler tank.Β  They instead put the money in conventional arms and atomic weapons.

MrAverage In reply to Lt-Havoc [2011-09-16 00:59:07 +0000 UTC]

Victor is a fourth-generation Autonomous Armored Vehicle manufactured by Nordyne Defense Dynamics. But yes, Laumer was a really enormous early inspiration to me and Rumblers draw a lot of inspiration from the Bolo. I tend to think my Rumblers' characters are more nuanced and less singleminded than the Bolos, though.
