It's very sweet, and very warm... I'm not a fan of the candid shot in general--but on the other hand, I dearly love it when you snap an unexpectedly beautiful moment in someone's life--and it's no longer a "shot" it's a portrait. This is a portrait in every sense of the word.

I rarely take the photo I have 'set up'. I can set it up... but then I wait and try to capture the in between poses moments. It takes a really good model to do a pose and not look posed. But of course, that may be what one is going for...in which case all bets are off.

Actually, surprisingly enough, I tend to work the same way. I design my shoots around individuals--not around an idea. The idea comes from how I view the person...and when I set them up, I pose them in a flattering pose--that is, something slimming, that plays to their strengths--and then I explain to them that I'm not looking for anything in particular--and that they should only feel like they need to stay in one place when I ask them to "hold it"--otherwise, I'll laugh and joke with them until I get the unguarded expression that I want. Some of the most difficult models I've had to work with have been the ones who want me to pose them, and just hold that pose until I give them a new one. They're the ones who think they are being professional when they resist the urge to laugh, when I tease them...and even if I come back with pretty pictures afterwards, I never feel a strong sense of connection to the end results--to me, they're a bit soulless.
I wish I was one of those photographers who carefully plan a shot--the lighting, etc--but nope, I fly by the seat of my pants. I just get someone dressed up, made up, and in the mood--and then *poof*--magic happens. (I hope!

it is funny as i am having extremes of both right at the moment...
the good is making the bad almost bearable and the bad is making it difficult to revel in the good like i would want to.
