No, it isn't a real mat. But I do a very very narrow line close to the color of the image, then a black and then the larger whitest area. It gives it more of a mat look. I hardly ever do mats but on this image, it seemed to be needed. Thank you very much.

Yes...you've done a fine job at emulating one.
I find when something i am working on needs to be visualized as it is meant to be--adding the mat -frame helps me decide if its a keeper.

I have been surprised at the reaction to them. They are the types of photographs I take regularly, processed the way I do (in PS) and .. almost never put up on this site, or any other for that matter. It has made me think that maybe I've been ignoring the photos that are all 'me'...not done for anyone else. Interesting and a real growth experience to have so much reaction to these 'ignored' or 'hidden' works of mine. Thank you for the great comment.

My daughter and her boyfriend bought their first aquarium and
some beautiful tropical fishes! So next time I'll visit them I will
take some pictures too!
