Description The Golden Bear Nightclub, which stood on the corner of Main St. and PCH where Huntington Beach Surf & Sport is now, was host to some pretty big performers. Do Jimmy Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin or The Doors ring a bell? Rumor has it that even The Rolling Stones once crept in to hear a friend play.It was torn down in 1986 because it did not meet earthquake standards but was not rebuilt. Many, who had visited the county landmark, claim Huntington Beach is not the same without it.

I shot this photo in 1985, just a year before it's demise. It's sad really. HB is sort of ugly now and no longer the great laid back surfer town it used to be.

That's just depressing. I bet they built a piece-of-crap walgreens in its place

I agree about Huntington Beach they've made it too touristy now. These are great shots of The Bear though, I only went there a few times but it was a great place that should have been rebuilt!

It should be rebuilt...but where now?! HB used to be just a street with surf shops and resale shops, and maybe an ice cream shop or two. Now...ugh... I hate going there.

I know it was just little ol' Main Street for so long. Now the only place I go is to dog beach. It sure was great seeing a photo from the old days though!

I'll be back in California in November. It will be good to see the dog beach again.

Mmm November's the best time to go too not so many people. I swear I'm getting so sick of all the people!!

My kids and husband call me a hermit. I think living in California coastal areas can do that to you. There are simply too many people! But here in the far north of Michigan, I'm still a hermit...so go figure.

I'm a hermit also I try to only go out when there's the least amount of people around.... maybe I'm more of a vampire!

It is my suspicion that most of the people here are deviant are hermits, even the 'street' photographers. They put the camera between them and the world. The distance is great when it's you looking at them rather than being part of "them".

Thanks for the photo and your comments. I too miss the old HB and the Golden Bear. So many great musicians played there.

HB isn't cool anymore, nor much fun either. Those huge hotels near Beach and PCH as well as the Mallization of Main Street sure have taken away the soul HB use to have.

Oh well, thanks for the photo.

Yeah, they made a huge mistake by allowing all that ugly development!
