I use a much simpler technique for ice and crystals and such, draw some random blob that looks sharpish in white, add tons upon tons of light and SHAZAM thats me. Glowy gets me everywhere. Except rocks, rocks dont glow and i hate them i can't draw them and argh *kills self* why did i have to draw rocks!

i actually base all my pictures on lighting, if i'm gonna add some form of detail, i think about it during my lighting stage and add it out of light first.. i'm weird i know ._.
