Description Do you need to split your scene into multiple renders, but also need to cast a shadow across several slices? Do you need to keep characters to a minimum, but wish you could add a few to cast shadows? Here is a great way to do it by using what I call "shadow dummies." This is designed for DAZ Studio, as it uses DS's geometry shell feature.

EDIT: I think I figured out a way to use this in Poser, if Poser doesn't have the geometry shell feature. Reduce the figure (be it a V4, G2, G3, or what) to Resolution Base, 0. Export that as an .obj file, with no textures. Then, reimport it. It won't be as low resolution as a geometry shell object, but it will be a heck of a lot less resource intensive as a full figure with articulation and textures.

I'm probably gonna have to do this. Even with the added lights, it's still rendering super slow.

That's a bummer.

I'm trying the render with models only to see how quickly it goes with just 4. The plus is that I'll need less lights for the models, the downside is that I love the reflection of the characters in the puddle.

What a wonderful idea!

While my PC can handle 16 or 17 G2/G3 figures with minimal props in a low poly scene, that's the wall for me. In a poly rich scene I have to back down to 8 or 10 figures. I have been itching to do a 30-40 character scene, and shadows were my exact stumbling block, thank you for this tip!

WHOA! My hat is off to you for even thinking of that many in one scene.

I have this vision of a pitched Scifi battle with ray's and explosions, but realistically it is probably beyond my skill level to pull off, it would have to be four or five scenes laced together and I dunno if I am patient enough to make it happen!Β

Yeah. Patience is the key for multi-part renders, but sometimes that is the only way to make it happen. It's a good time to invest in some quality pizza and beer. That's what I do.

Oh this is brilliant. I'm going to have to try this, since I do all my renders on my laptop. Thanks for the tut.

Glad it helps. A laptop is the reason for this. I use a 2011 Sager laptop. We do what we must.
