Description
That would be the "Republic of California", not the "Republic of China"...The flag, commonly known as the "Red Star Flag", is a descendant of the original Republic of California flag, still used in our timeline as a state flag today. When the region took up the reigns of independance, there were many loud voices proclaiming that no self-respecting modern nation should have a bear on their flag... thus, with the bear removed, the Red Star Flag was born...

Wow it was a long time ago I did this lol. I believe my reasoning was that the unclaimed territories that make up the eastern areas of the RoC were settled by Mexican revolutionaries and Mormons, who both appealed to California for integration and an effective "statehood" to avoid consumption by either Britain, Mexico, or the Confederacy.

I kinda think the Californians woulda said "screw you" and kept the bear flag anyway, but that's just me.
Lots of people forget Texas and California's OTL independence movements.

The Californians who gained independence from Mexico paid homage to Texas by putting the red star on the flag.

Probably a lot of them would, tbh, but I felt that the biggest consideration would be to properly stake out their claim as quickly as possible; with the C.S.A. looking to expand west, and Britain colonising west Canada and Dakhota, it was essential that California got their name (and flag) out there. With the Bear Flag taking longer to embroider and manufacture than the Red Star Flag, it was inevitable that cuts were made - the Bear had to go.
In the 1880's, when state symbols and flags were adopted, the Bear Flag was brought back into official use as the state flag of California, so its not like the bear dissapeared forever
This is all just my thoughts and ideas anyway; who knows what it would really be like, lol.

Got it. I like the star more than the bear, even I think most Californians in OTL would disagree

Let's just hope the mob doesn't call the CCLU and sue the CMP for police brutality.

Not in the 21st Century California of this timeline
The Republic of California has been struck hard by Chinese terrorists in the past decade. The destruction of the Porta Aurea Bridge (analogous to the Golden Gate Bridge) was the final excuse that the military required to take control of the nation; now it exists as a virtual military junta, elections suspended indefinately, cut off diplomatically from the League of Nations. Checkpoints and military convoys are a common sight on the freeways and city streets of the republic...
