Description
After longer than I care to think about, this pic is finally done. I'm sure it'll eventually get easier, but at the moment, digital painting just takes AGES. Like ... as long as a real painting. :-pMy goal is to draw dinosaurs that catch the fancy, and I thought it'd be great fun to pit a female Tyrannosaurus against an elephant. His tusks are exaggerated quite a bit, mammoth-like, so he'd have a fighting chance. And baby Rexy there in the grass is just scared. He really grew on me as I painted him. He may show up in another pic.
Done in Photoshop 6 with a mouse. Rawr.
Edit: I made a tutorial on digital painting from this pic. You can see it here: [link]

Before I saw this larger, it almost looked like the baby had tried to kill the elephant and momma had to take over. This is beautiful, especially the blurred scales right next to the... fourth wall, I suppose, It gives the viewer a big picture effect before focusing on the smaller things.

Well you know the dinos could have been Kasai Rex, seeing as she's fighting an elephant.

I like the concept - "mammoth" tusks and all! I love your color choice for the Rex, your perspective is awesome, and the overall composition is engaging. And... You did this with a MOUSE?! Incredible!
Also, I really appreciate the detail in Junior's eye and his patterns!

nicely done, i really like the concept of the elephant fighting a trex, good job. and as far as painting goes, i think its very well done. it might just be my eyes, but it looks alittle blurry, but rather than that i love it

Tyrannosaurus Rex vs. Loxodonta Africana
Most likely, the Tyrannosaurus would win. Why? #1. It's size-
Tyrannosaurs stood 16 to 18 feet in the air. Especially females. They stood 18 to (possibly) 20 ft. They were at least 40 feet long, and weighed about 6 or 7 tons.
#2. It's maternal instincts-
Tyrannosaurs were extremely powerful, especially when offspring were in danger. Basically, trying to attack a Tyrannosaurus offspring is like going up to a rhinoceros, and slappinng it in the face.
#3. It's sheer power-
T. Rex was the strongest land carnivore to ever walk the earth. It's bite force is 5 or 8 times stronger than that of a Nile crocodile (not entirely sure). If a Rex gets you in it's jaws, it's game over.
- But considering the fact that it would be facing something just as powerful, the fight would be like Tyrannosaurus vs. Triceratops.
Tyrannosaurus, victor.
Elephant, lunch.

Cool you know there is/was a show on Animal Planet called Prehistoric Park. Its about a guy who tralves through time collecting prehistoric animals to be in a zoo. On the last Episode a young female T-Rex escapes her pen and goes on a rampage. She attacks a baby elephant, the narrator says "She attacks the baby seperating her from the herd . . . . . . all but one." A wholy Mammeth was in the herd and stands face to face with the T-rex. The Mammeth does not get killed in fact there was never a fight. The guy in charge intervided.

great painting. I enjoy ideas of creatures from different times encountering each other. The musculature on the T-rex is as good as any scientific illustration. Excellent job!
And for the record, a bull African elephant's tusks can measure up to 8 feet long, enough to gore ol' rex!

I've often imagined a dinosaur and an elephant fighting, though I usually have the dino as Spinosaurus, as if Spinosaurus existed nowadays, it would be very likely to run into an elephant.
Nice. I bet on the elephant.

That is a possibility if Spiny was still around, they found the skeleton around Egypt or somewhere else in Africa before it got destroyed in I think WW2.

Holy geez-- you did that with a mouse?! O___O;; Wow. You've got a really steady hand. It's kind of hard for me to imagine, but I use the mouse with my right hand and I'm left-handed, so that probably adds to it, hehe.
It's easy to see why people thought this was a photo or something in the thumbnail. Again, excellent excellent realism on the dinosaurs and the elephant. That would be an interesting battle. The dinosaur probably has a stronger chance, since that species was a meat-eater (I think...), and it has sharp teeth and stuff. Very nice scenery, too. You did a great job fitting all three into it like that. I like how the mom dinosaur is squashing down the grass with her steps (good detail), and the way the elephant looks like he's about to give her a slam with those tusks. Awesome job. ^^

O_O Wow, you did this with a mouse? On a computer? From scratch?
Wow, that's awesome! I wish I could figure out how to do something THIS great straight from a computer. Of course, at my present level I can barely draw that by hand, and I certainly couldn't color it that way...@_X I've got loooots of work and practice to do.
Anyway, on to the actual COMMENT. There's tons of stuff I like about this one. First and foremost, it's got ACTION, and plenty of it. The mother T-rex charging forward to fight (and hopefully feast afterwards), the elephant turning and getting itself ready for the charge. And the baby T-rex getting scared of the oncoming battle (well, hey, I would be too...mommy's about to fight with a big huge thing with horns! Which is probably making lots of noise and looking as threatening as possible...). I think my favorite thing about this picture is the details in the lighting and texture, which I particularly noticed on the baby T-rex. He's got a noticably scaly, lizard-y look, with skin that reflects/shows of highlights very nicely, and really interesting orange/yellow eyes that I love, for some reason. It's also obvious on the mother T-rex, though not as much. And I love the look of the grass and trees, as well as the sky, which just have a very realistic look to it overall.
The one thing that strikes me as a little iffy is the elephant. Not the tusks, so much, but just...I'm not sure, but compared to the T-rexes it looks less realistic in comparison. I'm trying to figure out what it is, but at the moment I'm coming up blank. Texture, maybe? The fact that it looks a little flat in comparison to the bumps, curves and highlights on the dinosaurs? I'm not sure. Hmm.
But anyway...overall, I like this picture a lot. It looks very nice, and as I said before, I'm once again amazed that you could draw something like this with a MOUSE. That's just amazing.
Good job
~Karma

Wow. This is like aboslutely a magnificent piece of dinosaur work you created; it's mind blowing!
Again, wonderful job with this. I love the atmosphere in the picture and how you drew the two dinosaurs and the elephant very well. I love how the female T-Rex is charging at the elephant, while the elephant itself is about to put up a fight, even though he may not win or not. I like how you added in the baby Rex into the picture, he really does look a bit frightened here, but I bet all baby dinos were like that back in the day. *giggles*
You're digital artworks are quite impressive, really they are. I love how you positioned each animals with a sort of different action or mood. The brushes you applied to the scales, skin and the plants are excellent in my opinion. Also, I like how we get to see the view from the baby Rex here, it's quite lovely. I see you used a grass brush for the tail grass.. well, that's what I think. Still, you did them well and placed them so they don't clump in some areas; and I like how you made them spreaded out where the Female T-Rex has her foot on. The trees in the background are amazing and I like how you did the different greens. The trunks are superb, like how there are different sizes and how it spreads out at the top. The pond is done very well too; I like how it seperated the charging female T-Rex from the elephant.
The expression on both the baby Rex and the female T-Rex has on is lovely, but I love the baby's expression more then the adult's. The sharp teeths and tucks are drawned in and colored in details; they're visible and that's what I like to see on objects. The muscles on the female's body is awesome here and I like how they really stick out, it shows that she's well built for strength and speed, nice work on that. I like how you did their mouths. And those eyes... I must say, you colored them in wonderfully, they are greatly detailed to me. Great job with the different colors and the shadings and highlights that you applied to the animals, as well as the background. This picture is truely stunning. Excellent job overall as always NetRaptor. Keep it it, and keep making those dinosaurs come to life and make them catch the fancy. ^_^
