Description The new version of my Lightsabers tutorial!!

It presents a few differences with the original.. just thought it needed an update..
as for the rest of the colors:
Silver: Without Colorb Balance
Orange: As yellow, but adding some red, in midtones and highlights, add as much as you want..
Viridian: Less highlights than in the green one, let's say below +50

I think that's all.. enjoy and ask me about any issues you may have with it..

Question - how would you do this for a black-bladed lightsaber? Something along the lines of the Darksaber, or the black lightsaber from Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (like in this screenshot: Star Wars The Force Unleashed - Dark saber  )?

what about orange?

nico89-fx In reply to MichiganWolf [2015-07-01 01:30:48 +0000 UTC]

Well, with this method you can do any color you want, actually. See the X/Y/Z values beneath every color? those translate to Red Green and Blue in the color balance adjustment. So if you take, for instance, yellow, and start adding to the red (say: 50;0;-100) you'll start getting orange. If it's too strong start substracting from the yellow, or both if you want your orange with more red, whatever suits the look you are after. But that's the basic principle. Let me know if it works for you or else I'll try to elaborate further.

That's the idea, it can be applied to any light sources. Thanks for commenting!

I have but a small question, im new to this type of thing and I'm having just 1 issue. After the blade is finished, how exactly do you copy it over to a new image without bringing the backround with you? I eather get a white box, a white blade, or the finished blade with the black backround. Ive made sure its all set to blend to screen but its still not working :3

nico89-fx In reply to Nuhallis [2014-02-13 22:54:47 +0000 UTC]

You mean how do you put this over a picture or a drawing or something like that? Simply flatten all the layers (black included) and set it to screen. Black layer ensures that the blurred pixels can be colorized and when set to screen, black is rendered transparent. Don't know if I misunderstood. In that case, please do ask me back, sorry for the delay btw.

I'm a bit confused about the line tool, I can't figure out how to add another anchor point to it to make it pointed.  Any help on that?

nico89-fx In reply to NexeL-Arts [2013-12-12 03:36:53 +0000 UTC]

The line tool allows you to drawn vector shapes, right? with that in mind, you can then use the pen tool to add/delete and modify points to suit your needs. If you need me to elaborate further, please reply back and I'll gladly do so.

hey nico89-fx how do you do an orange lightsaber

nico89-fx In reply to nicething02 [2014-01-09 00:23:13 +0000 UTC]

Add some red to the yellow one or add some yellow to the red one. Depending on which hue you'd like it to be leaning towards. You may have to lower the other color a bit as well, especially on the highlights so that it won't clip as much, nor blow out a really thick edge, especially on 8bpc color space.

I've already said it, red and yellow. I don't mean this to sound mean, but experimenting and getting it wrong is the one and only way to get better at things, that's how I learnt and still do after all those years.

Actually, I'll get used to doing it, because I actually had to use your tutorial in one of my pictures!!  Thanks so much for it.    (and i've figured out how to use the pen tool on the line as well)

I'll try and use this, but tutorials always take so much for granted in terms of what you need to know in order to follow them, in my case I know nothing, but I'll try and it's good that there are people like you helping out with stuff like this

How would you get an orange color? Like Ploo Koon's lightsaber.

nico89-fx In reply to Spartan9053 [2011-04-02 22:15:29 +0000 UTC]

Master Plo's saber is blue, both in AOT and TCW...

Still, for an orange saber, mix red, green and yellow from color balance.. red being the base color and yellow and green telling it how much orange you want. If you crank up the yellow highlights a bit, you'll get a nice falloff with the core's edge being bright yellow and fading to orange as it loses intensity.

I always wants to know about getting a darker blue... Just thought it might be cool.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

nico89-fx In reply to Jade-Starrz [2011-01-12 22:35:58 +0000 UTC]

Well, you can get darker colors, but since lightsabers are, well, sources of light, they'll end up looking just less bright because of the transfer mode required to make it work as light (add/screen, preferrably the former)
The only way around that is tricking it a little, just like they did on episode 3, using normal as a transfer mode on a transparent layer instead of black. It'll look much less interesting and very flat, but well, I can't argue with personal taste.

Do you know how to make it look like it's in motion? Otherwise, awesome tutorial!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

nico89-fx In reply to freshy-42 [2010-12-14 17:27:35 +0000 UTC]

You mean something like this: [link] ?
It's fairly simple, you take the shape you've created with the line tool, press the A key to select one of the top anchor points and drag it around till you find an adecquate shape.
If you mean making a sort of trail, you may wanna duplicate the whole effect in a flattened layer and use directional (motion) blur to make that happen.

Thanks.. MsPaint? Seriously? Nah. You cant be serious .. It's for photoshop, but I'm sure the same can be achieved using Corel Painter, or even The GIMP, which is for free.

I've never really tried that software out.. You'll need at least layers and blending modes (transfer modes).. I know Gimp, although very limited when compared to Ps is able to do the trick. You could also get a free Photoshop CS4 Extended Trial from Adobe Corp., should you wanna try it out in the real deal.

its a good program for being free, though it totaly doesn't even compare to photoshop, but its still good for illustrating pictures.
