My friend made one (stuck a copyright label onto the inside) and passed it round in class. :< The stitches were really messy and wide on her hat's tail, so maybe you can also add that stitches should be small for neatness.
Lovely tutorial, though. I'll be making a Catbus hat soon. =w=

^__^ Happy sewing! And remember: It's OK to make hats based on copyrighted characters for yourself, but if you plan on selling them, they must be original!

I ordered it online from Amazon.com-- It's actually used to be a placeholder for wigs, but works just as fine for a hat holder. ^__^

Thank you so much for loving my hats!! Unfortunately, I don't make them anymore, and it would be violating copywrite laws to sell fanart. If you ever need help making your own hat, feel free to contact me at any time, and I'll get around to replying within 24 hours!

0.0 Wow, thanks for all the favorites!
Sorry about the confusion-- The section I made about the ears is poorly made! Yes-- The plain hat is made first, then the face and cheeks go on. Next make the ears separately as if they were little stuffed animals. *Finally* sew them onto the decorated hat. But if you do it a lil' out of order, it's no big deal. ^__^ Hope this helps.
Happy sewing!

I love the tut! But when you're talking about sewing the last side of the ear, the picture and your description confuse me D: Maybe because you didn't put the black on and it ended up as a square instead? Yeah, I don't know, but I think you could just sew a triangle piece and leave the bottom (the side attached to the hat) open to stuff and then sew it in with the hat seam, correct?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
nikkiswimmer In reply to BekahthePikachu [2009-01-07 02:17:49 +0000 UTC]
^__^ Thanks. I originally sewed the square-ish scrap felt together as a sample to show that you can make any shape with the technique, not just a pika-ear. Upon completing the tutorial, I realized just how confusing this must be to people!! Yes-- use a triangle shape for the ears. You can find a pattern for the pika-ear as well as the other decorations in my gallery.
Again, I totally apologize for the ambiguosity. Happy sewing!

It would be near-impossible. I sewed this with a machine, and even then I ran into troubles. You can buy travel sewing machines for about $15 these days.

hey this looks really fun to make. i was thinking, is it possible to add a pipecleaner/wire into the ear to make it bendable? how would you attach it? thanks so much for taking the time to create andd share this tutorial! :]
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
nikkiswimmer In reply to aleckzandurh [2008-11-16 05:32:27 +0000 UTC]
Yeshh, it is possible. Make sure to bend the ends of the pipecleaner wire inwards, so that you don't get poked by the sharp ends! I would put the wire right in the ear with the stuffing and sew it in.
Check out my Magikarp hat-- the two fins both have pipecleaner sewed inside the seams to bend the fins into shape.
Happy sewing!!

Cool tut! Thank you. A question. If I put light wire in the ears before stuffing and sewing, would they stand upright? or would the weight just pull them down?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
nikkiswimmer In reply to foxpaw [2008-09-25 15:13:25 +0000 UTC]
Hm, I'm not sure. I've had difficulty with wiring things-- I wired the fins and tail for my magikarp hat, but they still tend to flop down. I've found that the more stuffing you add, the more something will want to stand up. You might also want to think about sewing the actual ear into the hat's seam-- ask clearkid about this, because she is a guru!

Oh oh! You didn't tell me about this and now I must leave such late comments!
First I will say that I will be referring people to this for the whip stitching! I was planning on making a tutorial on that if I ever had the time, but this covers that and some other things pretty well.
I think you've presented some useful stuff here and shown great initiative making this. I think it's clearly presented as well.
Just a tip/reminder, you can sew all kinds of things in the existing seams of the hat. It's easier, cleaner and usually stays better.

This is amazing! Thanks for posting!
A question though, how much of the material did you use? Would a yard cover it?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
nikkiswimmer In reply to XBudgiexchanX [2008-08-06 20:50:31 +0000 UTC]
Um... about 1/4 of a yard makes one hat with no decorations. Just make sure to be economic with your cutting! Usually with small decorations, I run over to the Michaels to get an 8 1/2 by 11'' sheet of felt for like 89 cents! Super cheap; way better than buying 1/4 of a yard of white felt for $2 if you are only going to need it to make eyes.
Thank you so much for the kindness and the favorites! (:
