Description
D1 Matriline and D14 Matriline swimming together in an aerial photo taken by a drone.
|| Nim | Flint | Ummi | Dex | Sita with Gemma | Nyla (breaching) | Data | Selena | Coen | Cyrus ||
Nyla has always been a highly active individual, often showing off with her aerial stunts. But researchers couldn't believe their luck when she performed a beautiful, full body breach just as the photo was taken!
_______________________________________________________________________
As always, Nim and Flint are swimming together. The Mothers Group in the middle with young Sita getting support and valuable mothering skills from Ummi and Selena. Then the boys flanking the side.
This painting took way too long. But I am so happy I got it finished just in time to meet my January deadline. Woohoo! I can tick this painting off my Painting Resolution Journal

Holy smokes that drone level is amazing! I think I haven't seen anything like this before. Well, I've seen drone photos of course but art based on drone level - that's new. Seeing the D matrilines swimming together makes me feel happy. I can imagine them chatting together under the surface. Really great details; the transparent water is gracefully done.

This is awesome! You can almost "feel" the orca moving, and that takes talent. Good jobΒ

Aahhh Nimkish I lament not commenting on your work more often! It is so incredibly beautiful and inspiring to me, I love seeing your pieces pop up in my inbox. Rest assured I usually spend several minutes gawking at them haha. I'm having a hard time just coming up with words to describe all the things I like about this. First and foremost: AERIAL. I occasionally see aerial pictures of whales and dolphins and they are always so awesome. They lend this unique view and it's something I have very rarely seen in artwork. Definitely never with orcas - let alone so many! (you must have been spent after painting all of them : p) You did an amazing job on the water. I like how you can see exactly who is above and who is below water, just by the colouring. The surfacing ripples are great (plus, those little shinies on Nim and Data(?) ), and the splash is AWESOME. It looks like the splashes you'd see on a commercial photo for milk or something
Yeah man, wow, I love this. Stunning stunning work!

Thanks Namu!

I am super happy with how this turned out. It is always exhausting adding more characters, but it usually pays off.

This is an incredibly good piece of art. The way you colored each orca a little differently to reflect their depth makes this feel very real. The ripples and splashes are so well-done and accurate. This pose is difficult, but your anatomy is still spot-on. This is some really nice work, you've done a marvelous job.

Thank you! I was excited when I started painting this because its the type of painting that's not very common. I'm so happy with how it turned out

Yeah, it really is uncommon. Β I've only seen a few aerial-view drawings, and even then, I've never seen one that is fully colored and this realistic. Β You did really well, especially considering that this is a new and difficult pose to do.

Aww thanks! <3 I was pretty impressed with how the splash turned out. I've never found a technique to draw splashes that has worked very well.

As you should be it looks great! The intricacy on the droplets baffles me lol
Did you use a special brush or did you do it all by hand?

Nimkish In reply to Dj-Luka [2016-02-03 05:42:35 +0000 UTC]
I did the splashes by hand A lot of low opacity painting + erasing to achieve the look.

Thank you! I fell in love with all the aerial photos from the drone surveys and I knew I would draw something inspired by them eventually! Large group shots are also love, but damn, they will be the death of me XD This painting just wouldn't have looked right without a large group though Β I was considering adding my entire pod (an additional 5 characters) but just too much 0___0

Aleksi-Ann In reply to Nimkish [2016-01-31 15:42:48 +0000 UTC]
yes, it's a lot of work, making sure it still looks cohesive and not cluttered, and getting all of them correct proportionally with one another (I've never been able to do it lol)Β
And ahhh the survey photos are to die for! You hardly ever see orcas at that angle and some of the unique saddle patches are so beautiful, plus some great nursing shots have come out of them!
lol the extra characters would have been great, but this piece doesn't feel at all like it's lacking so they weren't necessary.
