In the tradition of the Renaissance Masters, all curves on the body are treated as convex - as the idea is that we are like balloons filled with water that presses out against the skin.  So, curves that at first appear concave are to be broken into several concave curves arranged to describe a concave design - as exemplified here with the hand.  It is a good rule of thumb!  (Rule of thumb - get it?  haha. )

Great tutorials.

The second point may vary between genders (I think), because when I lined my thumb up, it was half-way between the base knuckle and it's first one above it.

in the diagram it suppose to be a projected line from the knuckles formed with the hand open , not suppose to measure it when you have the fingers close to each other . but it's suppose to be a guideline anyways

The soggy pizza analogy is both helpful and hilarious.
Also I had never noticed that the thumb lines up with the knuckle like that. No more too-long thumbs! Yay!
