Description
This one is very interesting...I had a dream about alchemy once again. It not abnormal for me to dream about alchemy because my dreams fill the gap in my life. Alchemy is a gap.
After doing some crazy hard looking into the array, I figured out what it does! It was a mystery, but now I know it creates "Souls". I use that term very loosely, but its the closest definition to how I can put it. In essence, this array would provide the ultimate programming for an object.
This array is base upon the theory of the Universal Knowledge. I believe that all the knowledge known to the universe is in existence, and in some cases, accessible. How to access it is the hard part. So people are said to have had access to it. It's also believed animals all have limited access.
This array would open that wealth of knowledge and provide it to what the array is drawn on. It would basically give it a soul; the ability to live.
Now some might fear that the array would make the creature super intelligent, and this could cause a problem. I honestly don't think that would happen, as it is my belief that the knowledge would still be restricted to the being. Say I animated a paper swan. It could fly, it could move. It might adapt a bit, but It wont be able to do something advanced as it just isn't capable.
To those of you who have seen 9, it's like the robot brain. It knows all, but It can't do all.

^These are the three arrays that made this array as I saw them in a dream.

So did you see these in a dream then draw them to figure out how they worked or did your dream help to discover its purpose?

I figured it out after staring at it for hours on end when I should have been doing other things.

A body capable of information registry, a brain of some sort, less limited than a paper crane. What if one produced and bound a soul to a computer? It would gain functional sentience?

More than likely, but that would be really scary...

Well, if you bound a soul to an object incapable of sustaining life (paper crane) wouldn't the soul die upon creation? A machine can sustain itself, and a computer even has a brain to store information.

Depends on how you look at it. The way I see it, a soul could be bound to anything and it would live. It probably couldn't hold memories, but it might. I have never gotten the chance to try...

I don't see how a paper crane could facilitate life. It's a mesh of dead cells, the same way a corpse becomes no longer suited for life and death occurs. It would also need a brain, some means to contain information. A soul doesn't produce the body's ability to motorize and sustain itself, that's the condition the body fills so that the soul stays connected...
I suppose. I dunno, I'm trying to look at this from the most realistic perspective possible. (on the assumption that the theory of the soul being a channel to the world's knowledge is true)

That's your problem. Realistic perspective on a made up form of magic/science. This is based off ye old theories of the body, mind, and soul, so a lot of this stuff makes little logistical sense in these modern times. You must suspend disbelief on things like this.

drat.
do you suppose there would be any merit in modern adaptation?

To something like a computer as you were saying, oh yes!

Well, modern science understands that paper cranes (and suits of armour, lol) are incapable of movement and information registry, the conditions of the human body that enable life, so perhaps that should be considered..

Modern science also says alchemy is impossible, thus rendering any argument against alchemy null, but correct by default... I suppose....

okay.. lets say the military invented a substance that is capable of everything (limitless stretching, changing chemical makeup to mimic other elements, dissolving anything on command, etc.) and they decide to slap this array on it. would that mass of junk be able to do virtually anything and take over the world??????

Hello.
So, I have a role play that revolves around a bit of Alchemy and things in this category. After stumbling upon this piece, a question struck me. I have this character that was a constructed soul that wasn't birthed by a human but artificially created. He was infused into the mind of another character, and thus they share the same body, basically. I won't get into details.
But, I was wondering. Would this array be capable of doing something of that sort? And if so, is it alright if I use it and give you full credit?

Yes, this array is capable of that. And yes, you may use it.

I don't know about this.. There are no symbols that would tell you this is a "soul" maker. I know you use it loosely but I think this should probably be redone with more runes and symbols.
Also, you said it would open "that wealth of knowledge" that sounds a lot like the "eye" or "gate" from the series. I see no eye though.

You are basing to much of FMA, my friend.
This is a theoretical thing, but I had two other friends who know about alchemy look at this and think of what it could do. They both eventually came upon a soul creation, or something to summon something out of the known world. That's how I came upon that thought.
Now let me drill this in your head while I can; Symbols are not always needed. What is a symbol? A series of lines that mean something. What is an array? Also a series of lines that mean something. Thus, symbols can be bypassed by using certain setups in an array.
Now the Eye is a creation of the series and a strong point in many beliefs. That is the All Seeing Eye, which represents all that is and knows all. It is just. However, it is only a representation of the knowledge. If like the word "Cheese". It only represents cheese as a way of pointing it out and giving it name, while cheese is really something, much more that a word.
I hope this made some sense because I am rushing all this because I have to go, so if you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
