Description
Time for another set of KTS Races, and in just before the end of the month too, phew.Next up is a couple of seperate races, first being the Dwarves.
The Dwarves are an old and proud race that have fallen on hard times. Expelled from their ancient underground kingdoms they have been forced to live on the surface in the lands of other races, and their situation is grim.
Furthermore this has exacerbated a cultural revolution among the Dwarves, with younger Dwarven generations embracing the more open and optimistic attitudes and beliefs of their new neighbors on the surface, which is possibly even more distressing to the tradition upholding and honour bound older generations.
But not all is lost, the Dwarven population is increasing once again, and they are embracing new technologies and ideas, perhaps they can still regain their once powerful status in the world.

Now thatΒ΄s a surprisingly charming Dwarven lady.
I thought Dwarves are born straight out of stone.
At least thatΒ΄s what they tell here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytWz0qβ¦

So young "surface dwarves" are basically similar to the dwarves of Elarn (the name of my novel). Dwarves in that are arguably the most benevolent civilized race, as due to their naturally inquisitive nature (being masters of all material sciences) and the worth of having people to trade with, if these dwarves had an RPG stat, they'd immediately get a +5 to charisma. Well, the dwarves of Nord at least. (There's three distinct sub-groups).
That is prolly the cutest dwarf I've seen yet.

Hehe, well she is a nice gal, but her race... doesn't have the best reputation in my setting.
Dwarves are known mostly as refugees, living in disparate communities in the wilds, migrant camps and secluded quarters in larger cities. Even among other Westerlanders (Humans, Hauflin, etc) they are shunned and looked down upon.Β
And their disreputable reputation isn't entirely unearned, Dwarves have had to do a lot of bad stuff to survive, for instance, the reason Dhukari Orcs have big hefty Dwarven Iron weapons, is because they traded with the Dwarven blacksmiths for 'em

Fair dues. In Elarn most of the other races have some disreputable traits:
High elves (yl'fol) have a stereotype of being haughty and elitist, which is definitely not unfounded; they all possess the genetic factors for a mage (so they can all use arcane magic, the ability of magic wielding itself being based entirely on genetics), so that alone makes them think highly of themselves over others. Though they don't rub this elitism in anyone else's face more than those of their race who don't inherit the mage genetics, which is a very rare occurrence.
Wood elves (sko'fol), though not really belligerent, are very distrustful to anyone not their own caught in their territory without permission and are not above shooting first, asking questions later, or letting said territory take care of them. They're openly prejudiced towards high elves, and vice-versa, the wood elves basing it on their cousin race's haughtiness, while high elves view wood elves as uncivilized and weak due to their life-style and lack of the universal prevalence of the mage genetic factors.
Humans are arguably the most polarizing of them all; the northern Galandrians being very old-fashioned and slow to accept new ideas, as well as being rigidly patriarchal and misogynistic, hence why many of their disgruntled peoples actually go live with high elves, many joining their foreign regiments (army regiments comprised of non-high elves, which include humans, dwarves and even orcs). By contrast the Falarnians (based on Renaissance southern Europeans) are more open-minded and arguably more advanced than Galandrians, heavily influenced by their cousins across the gulf, the Katintans. The Katintans, based on Africans, are the most advanced human civilization, even having developed cannons, all the while basing their entire social structure on their god, which is a primal lion god. As such all their warriors are women and their men are the non-combatants. Biggest contrast comes from the Amritians (based on ancient Egyptians), situated north from the Katintan nation, who are the only civilization, other than the dark elves, who openly practice necromancy. Hence everyone else scorns them, though they practice it not out of malevolence, but because it's the only way they can survive since their kingdom was sacked by the dark elves, due to one of their royalty betraying them, and when the dark elves were finally driven off, the nation was pretty much decayed, so they used the knowledge they gleamed about necromancy to compensate their once lush land becoming an arid, ever grey wasteland.
In terms of dwarves; the mountain ones are the most jovial and will happily greet with open arms. Their hill cousins, in turn, are more aloof, mostly because their culture is also drastically different, being more druidic than industrial, but if you make 'em happy they'll treat you right. Biggest contrast comes from sea dwarves, who are seafaring with ironclad ships, and not particularly fond of outsiders. They'll wreck your shit out of paranoia that you're trying to steal their techniques for their seemingly invincible ships.
And this is not even touching upon goblinoids, beastfolk and insectoids.

Damn dude, by the sunds of it you really do have a good handle on the background lore for your own setting, how long have you been working on it?

TheWolfJarl In reply to Obhan [2017-12-23 20:50:49 +0000 UTC]
Background I've been working on since high school, so maybe around nine years. I've written a few chapters as of now, but because I was doing university I had to lay off it. I'm trying to get back into the groove, what with burn-out from all the research and analyses I had to do for my master's degree. That is to say I've been revising and fine-tuning it all these years to ensure I have the world as plotted-out as possible so no inconsistencies or the like arise.

Oh I've certainly been there myself, there's nothing more fun and interesting than working on your own fantasy setting when you're supposed to be doing seemingly dull university work

she reminds me of that gnome i think it was you drew a few years back, the one where you did all sorts of expressons for her. Not sure why, probably because small busty women

Obhan In reply to LordofFury [2017-08-01 11:54:22 +0000 UTC]
It could be that, also maybe because she has similar enlarged facial features (big eyes etc) and head on a smaller frame.
Still that Gnome girl was cute and fun to draw, so I think it's still good, right?

There may be some bearded dwarven ladies, but I haven't decided yet.
In any case being bearded probably won't be a popular fashion trend among Dwarven women, so rest assured

Yeh that's weird isn't it?
I mean I'm not super into the Furry ladies, but they're allright in their own way, but the idea of a fictional female character with a beard or facial hair just weirds me out.Β

Obhan In reply to Kajmakan [2017-07-29 12:02:46 +0000 UTC]
Oh right!
Yeh it kinda weirds me out for some reason too, though I don't know why. Like when they did it in the Hobbit movie during the flasbacks, I thought it was so weird.
But then again they did it in Rat Queens with Violet, and I felt that was different, it meant more to her character and they explained it a bit better in the culture.
Plus Violet kicked ass
