Someone asked me to explain my process...in detail x.x so here it is. This is my first time trying a tutorial so I'm sorry if it's lacking x.x I hope this can be helpful to someone and if all else fails now I can just point to it rather then explain myself X3

Great tutorial! And it isn't lacking at all
Hm, just one question: do you layer shadows when the base colours are still wet, or do you let them dry?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

okashichan In reply to sandalwood01 [2007-03-21 21:12:50 +0000 UTC]

Let them dry! There's not enough time to do it wet anyhow usually, plus the color comes in darker if the marker underneath is dry. Er, that's a bit confusing...how to reword...when you color wet marker on wet marker, it's smoother and the color differences are less severe because they try to blend with each other. When you color wet marker on dry marker it becomes darker because the colors sort of lie on top of one another rather then blend so it's darker because there's more ink building up there. ahaha it still sounds confusing! I hope that helps =3=!

Nice tutorial, I forget how similar using markers is like using photoshop by doing each coloring phase in layers. I have a bad habit of working with dark colors too early.

Yeah that's one of my biggest problems. All my cg shit is pretty dark/bright, so I have to mentally prep myself to think in LIGHT SHADES whenever I marker something or I ruin the whole thing right off the bat!

*-* <333 *rolls around* Dx This is alot like my process, except:

1. I dont weight my ink (Lacks skills ;o;'')
2. I use colored pencils, cause markers never agree with me. :<
3. You art is ALOT prettier. *O* <333 *makes sexy noises* >o< <33

I have a question... how does something like prisma colors compare to this? Can you use the same techniques?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

okashichan In reply to K-i-s-s-h-u [2006-07-19 04:05:58 +0000 UTC]

Prismas are my least favorite markers in the world. They're obnoxiously bright and don't blend as well and die really easily, but in theory yeah they can be used the same way, though they don't have a nice brush tip, only broad and fine, neither of which blend smoothly. I'd recommend Tria's if you have them at local art stores over prisma for nice blending. They're usually wherever Prismas are sold.

Ahaha yeah, the price is killer. I ended up just biting the bullet one day when my local store had a sale and bought the big huge ass case. I wept X3

K-i-s-s-h-u In reply to okashichan [2006-07-19 15:20:28 +0000 UTC]

Oh maaaaan. Yikes. Yeah.. I have no idea why everything is so expensive.. it's also a pain because I have to order everything online. Cuz the place that sells the only art supplies near us is like WICKED expnsive.. thye totally overcharge.. so I have to go online to buy stuff >.> so you sya Trias are the best? What about Copics? Or Neo Piko (sp?)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

okashichan In reply to K-i-s-s-h-u [2006-07-20 02:08:22 +0000 UTC]

Copics are the absolute best for sure! But again, way expensive so I recommend them, but if price is an issue Tria is a good substitute. They blend really nicely and have three tips which really comes in handy and usually aren't shipped from overseas so shipping isn't killer like it is on the copic site. I actually just got my hands on some Neo Piko's for the first time last week and they seem pretty nice. I haven't full blown colored with them yet, but from what I could see they blend pretty well and have nice colors. So I'd say, Copic is the best, but Tria and it seems Neo Piko are a good second, but prismas totally suck XD

Uwa! Sugoi! I found this site that has copics and neopiko for PRETTY cheap.. but maybe I could find some trias as well.. are tria pressure sensative? I knwo I was disappointed with my first marker set because it was water based and not pressure sensative. Not to say that they won't come in handy (they were chartpack >.< Osh.. but I had someone give me a big rant last night on how Tria's were used by the strict professionals and that nothing else can compare O.O XDDDD But I'll take your word for them being good!! I'd also like to know what your opinion on Neo pikos are when you get mroe of a chance to sue em!

okashichan In reply to K-i-s-s-h-u [2006-07-24 21:46:24 +0000 UTC]

Woot, sorry for long pause in commenting, finishing a trip up to new york and just got back. I'd say tria's are pretty pressure sensative, since they do have a brush tip. The brush tip on Copic Sketch markers are the absolute best for that though. As for your friend and the Tria for strict professionals, that's a dirty lie! XD There's really no set things pro's use. I've seen pro's use prisma just fine even though it's the cheapest, ugliest marker set to me, but regardless, Copic is a better, higher quality brand then Tria no matter how you look at it, so if I were to make that statement, I would make it regarding Copic, not Tria. Either will work though, because they both color well and are quality markers. I used the neopiko's a bit more and I really like them, though still like Copic better. I would break the 4 markers down like this:

Prisma= Poor
Tria/Neo Piko= Good
Copic Sketch= Excellent

You can't really go wrong with any of the bottom 3 I think, but Copic Sketch again wins because they're refilable, which really saves on money in the long run if you use them a lot.

Ok!! Thankyou for the big tip!! I'm sorry I didn't respond right away either.. I jsut got back form Chicago! XD Must be a time for travel or something.

What I think I'll do is buy 2 or three of Tria, Neo Piko, and Copic and see how I like em before I invest all the money in one brand. I owuld hate to do that and not end up liking em very much ^_-

Thank you for your time in replying to my questions. I really appreciate the help! I've been getting a lot og mixed responses and really have no idea what I am going into since I use Photoshop on pretty much all my artwork. thanks again!

Ahaha np, and yes that seems like the best thing to do, buying a little of all. Be advised though, Neo Piko and Copic both have two different types of markers, one with a fine tip and one with a brush tip. For both I recommend the brush tip versions. On Copic the brush tip markers are called 'Copic Sketch', and for Neo Piko I'm not sure what the name for the brush tipped one is, but wherever you buy from should let you know so just keep an eye out! Good talking to you about it all! I love markers so I love talking about them XD Good luck with your marker buying! Drop me a line some time about how you liked um!

What pens do you use for inking?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

okashichan In reply to Obi-quiet [2006-07-02 14:23:38 +0000 UTC]

no problems asking! I use Micron liners, sizes .005 and .01 and copic sp multiliners, sizes .05 and .03. You can get the microns at almost any craft or art supply store and copic multiliners on the copic site.

Obi-quiet In reply to okashichan [2006-07-02 15:24:53 +0000 UTC]

I use microns, but I can't get my lineart to look anywhere near that good. *sigh*

What are copic liners?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

okashichan In reply to Obi-quiet [2006-07-03 06:49:48 +0000 UTC]

They're just like microns but they're refillable and the nibs are changable and they're even finer point. I really love them to death! And it just takes practice with line work!! And a steady hand!

My computer's a freak. When something loads for too long or I let the computer sit idly when I run to the bathroom or grab a glass of milk the computer will log off the net, WITHOUT telling you. So you're sitting there thinking to yourself 'Holy damn, when the hell will this finish loading' then it hits you like a birck and you're like 'DAMN. I'mma gonna beat you, Mistah Computah. Stop mocking me, dammit' Then you restart the computer and the process repeats itself.

Enougth yammering though. That tut made me laugh mroe than once. Twas good and funny.

T_T I bow down to your mad ninja drawing skills @_@
I tried and failed miserably to color with markerso.o; but maybe that's cause Le Plume markers aren't as good as Copics? o_o I dunno<<;
anyways, awesome tut^^
you should put up a digital one too(for PSP8 if you could, there aren't any out there ;_; )! but only if you have timeXD;;
eee and congrats on the DD^_^ you deserve it~!

You know I've never heard of those markers so I'm not sure of the quality level. Thanks so much for liking the tut and for the congrats! As for a photoshop 8 one, well I don't have that version X3 I have 7 and CS but all photoshop tuts can help with all other photoshops, (well all the higher number tuts at least). Ahaha and honostly I have no method X3! When I color in photoshop it's really random! I can imagine it being the least helpful tut ever X3 ~~<33

DawnofChaos In reply to okashichan [2005-02-24 20:55:30 +0000 UTC]

Le Plume markers are by Marvy Uchida, I thinko.o; Japan-madeX3 they work out pretty good for me, but I've never had a chance to compare them to any other brando.o; 'cept prisma, and those bleed way too much for me to ever use them<_<; plus they smell like a bazillion sharpies put together and cause me to go all dizzy and loopy so I have to cap 'em or open up a window or somethingo.O;
and I color the same way in paint shop, only it never turns out just the way I want it to...o.x
I can't quite figure out how to get all the crisp edges for shadows and highlights and sucho.o;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

okashichan In reply to DawnofChaos [2005-02-25 01:09:28 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I hate Prisma's x.x Plus the colors are bliiinding and the tips are useless too me. The fine one's too small and the thick ones too big. I've never seen the Le Plumes but now I wanna find some X3 As for photoshop, I'm not very good at crisp in it, or rather I don't do crisp. Mines always sort of...fadey blah X3 I dunno, I love my markers so much it makes me hate my cg stuff sometimes! X3! I'm fickle!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DawnofChaos In reply to okashichan [2005-02-25 02:42:38 +0000 UTC]

hah I'm a CG-chick mainly but we had this project thing in English today where we had to draw something related to the Grapes of Wrath, so I went out and bought new Le Plumes and used em to color the picture I'd drawn, and they turned out pretty well^^ they kinda had lots of ink in the brush tips when I first started using them, but a couple swipes on a scrap piece of paper helped with that issue<<
they're really cheap too! I got a 6pack for $14 XD;;
well. Cheaper than copic;
