... 0.0 Oooh. Um, well, er, I'll favourite this in a sec'. But, before that, I must say this is incredibly helpful. Now I just need some copic markers... But I'm stuck with my bloody Prismas for now. Hmph. I shall beg for my birthday... Anywho, not only is the tutorial kick-ass, but the picture is also very nice. It inspires me to buy white-out, which I will get to eventually. Or something like that. >_> I'll get to the art store eventually... -procrastinator- -nodnod- Anyway, I worship you much for making this tutorial. -does so-

Ahah aaww thanks, oh but not white out, sometimes it's way chunky and gross. If not a bottle of white ink go for a white gel pen type thing. Or one of those deco paint pens. Most arts and craft stores should have them. Oh and prisma's would work with this too, just a little bit more difficult 'cause you have that big fat tip to work with (or at least difficult to me X3), but glad if it can help ~~<333

Yeah... I thought that was probably it, but I thought I'd heard of someone using white-out for it once... Or I'm delusional... And thanks for the advice! I shall check Michael's and see what I can find there... and I agree heartily, Prismas are difficult... and evil... >_>

Bruu, how helpful is this? I absolutely adore my markers, even though they're prismas. Yet, this still helps and explains a lot. I hope to get copics soon. =TT_TT=
There isn't any chance you know how to draw water with markers... is there? xD; I could reaaaaally use a tutorial like that. lol
Anyway, awesome job. x3

okashichan In reply to enjeruchan [2005-02-21 21:09:00 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I'm glad it helps, and yeah in theory the method should work with prisma's too, you'd just be using the fat chunk tip rather then the brush tip copics have (which personally I suck with but that's because I got spoiled using the little tips Tria's have). Eer...actually I think somewhere in my gallery there is a scary ass mermaid chick with water...in truth I just made sloppy circles with the fat tip of the marker X3!! I think I handle water too ghetto to be of any real help there. Sorry! ~~<33

This is going into my faves. I never heard of the markers you use, but they sound neat :3 now I use Prisma markers so maybe I can almost do the same with these like your markers. I actually learned some new things from looking over this Thanks ^^

okashichan In reply to candlegirl [2005-02-21 20:49:14 +0000 UTC]
Oh it should be about the same. Prisma's are just the cheaper and more readily available and easier to find kind. I have a set of them too. The only diff is they don't have the brush tip, but if you've got control with the fat chunky tip you should still be able to. Thank you for the fav ~~<333

you know, if everyone knows how to do something, it soon becomes an invaluable skill
It's like the magician's trick. No one is as interested once you find out how its done.
i guess i still dont get why people are so eager to be cloned. congrats on the DD n stuff
π: 0 β©: 1
okashichan In reply to martinhoulden [2005-02-21 21:04:49 +0000 UTC]
Alright, I put in my description that I was asked to make this by a friend, so no, it's not a want to be cloned. It was a favor to a friend who needed help. I think your assuming that just because someone can look at a tutorial they'll suddenly be transferred someone's skills. If that were so there would be millions of people with huge comic deals because of all the 'how to do comic' books out there. Thereβs always a distinct difference between someone who only ever copied there stuff and someone who actually develops the skills through practice and thereβs nothing wrong with using something like a tutorial for reference. It's just help; can get people started if they've no clue; can give them a hint on how to handle a medium. You still need skill to do it as well as practice. I didn't pick up a pencil or my markers for the first time and just bust out some prize after skimming through a anime mag as I'm sure you didn't suddenly pick up your pencil one day after leafing through an anatomy book and draw the lovely anatomy and poses your pictures have. Art is never like a magicians trick because regardless of whether or not you know how someone did it, it is still something that only that one person can do like they do it, and each and every person, no matter how much they try and copy, does put their own personal touches to it, because we're all different. And shit didn't that sound almost deep? Iβm anything but deep. X3 In other words I don't have the clone fear because no one can suddenly learn my style and steal my drawing and coloring abilities just because I put up one 8 step tut. Thanks for the congrats.

martinhoulden In reply to okashichan [2005-02-21 22:37:37 +0000 UTC]
cool!
and yeah, i know what youre saying, its just ... the way you DO things, is YOUR style right? like, its all cumulative, like the materials you use ... whether you start with stick figures ... whether you ink ... what types of pens you use ... maybe you do a little thumbnail first etc. All these things, and a bunch more, eventually come together to make a style that is your own
When they first "invented" manga, it was fresh, unique, cool. But how many pieces on dA do you see, that are all pretty much the same standard, and absolutely indifferent from eachother. I mean ... i look at the anime on here and with the exception of a few very talented individuals, it looks the same. I cant look at their stuff and say "ooo, thats by (insert name here) (apart from, i said, with a few people)
and you know what, that RUINS manga, cos so many people are quite blatantly just following those "paint by numbers" hot to draw manga books. Its liek ... "ooo, an anime eye looks like THIS. you dont have to actually understand how an eye works, just ... draw this line, then this line ... then this line. and viola"
For me, it takes away all the coolness that anima and manga once had, because so many people are doing it! Because of bloody tutorials! (and also cos anime is largely glorified smilie faces).
I have my own personal little grudge against tutorials. All they do, as far as i'm concerned, is just make a style worn out, and used up. Yeah ... ok maybe people will not copy your stuff to the letter ... but any little secrets you've given away about how you make your art YOURS, will intrinsicly leak into anyone who reads this and wants to follow in your footsteps.
I could talk about this all night, but i shall'nt XD Once upon a time, i used to love people and their tutorials - heck, i used to do them for people. But then i realised ... how hard it is to stand out in the crowd nowadays, with the amount of people who do stuff that is "similar" to me ... or whatever. So i am quite vigilant in trying to preserve every part of "me" possible.
And ... as far as im concerned, you seem a decent person, so don't take this as a bitch at you. I like a little ... two way argument now and then, othewise, how do we evolve to be better if we don't open our minds and allow for outside input?

okashichan In reply to martinhoulden [2005-02-21 23:25:32 +0000 UTC]
Ahah oh no no, I'm not taking it as a bitch. In truth I'm the most argumentative mofo ever, and I enjoy talking about shit like this, but most people get all up in arms if you disagree with them so yeah 'cause you're not dumb!! X3! I've seriously had too many people get all pissed about my replies 'cause I'm not particularly tip toe-y with what I say so I appreciate you being the same way.
I do totally agree with you about the lack of originality in most manga inspired art these days, a lot of people simply copying the style they see (a lot having to do with those horrid books), but to me that's all they'll ever be. People who copy. Those aren't the people that will make it some day big, those aren't the people that will develop some awesome comic that will sell millions. They are just what they are, clones. They can make a fairly nice looking copy of an image we've seen a million times but after all the OoOo's and aaaahs they won't really have anything to show for it.
Glorified smiley faces X3 That made me choke on my juice. The way I always consider it is this: The people that think drawing in a manga-esque style is easy are stupid wankers that have no real talent and just copy what they see thinking it the easiest way to do art and get fans. I actually heard an ART DIRECTOR of all things at a convention say that he used to draw like marvel, and then realized manga was WAY easier so he changed to that. After nearly strangling him to death I realized, hey, his stuff looks like shit. I hope he has fun sucking so much and dies some day soon X3 That's a shallow kind of art and I just...disregard it completely. It holds no interest to me or real value. Those kind of people may get the page views on devi but....so what? Those aren't paying the bills are they? That guys stuff was only at the con because he was the art director for gods sakeβ¦.man thinking about that guy makes me wanna spew x.x Anyhow X3
I can see how a lot of tutorials from one person would get annoying and redundant, but like I said I don't do them normally and won't probably do them again, I've just been getting a lot of questions about how I do certain things and I'm lazy, so now I have something to point to. In truth I don't have any secrets. I don't sit and consider my pieces composition and lighting and flow and all that artsy crap first. I just go with it, waste hundreds of trees drawing crap, and every so often get unlazy enough to ink and color something. Iβm seriously the most undeep artist ever and proud of the fact. Iβm not angsty or tortured, Iβm poor but thatβs βcause my job sucks X3 I donβt have the super secret master technique to lose, and even if someone can see how I do it, and maybe even copy it fairly decently, hell even exactly, theyβve just become that fat art director man, and therefore have nothing but scorn awaiting them when they turn because you can always tell when somethingβs a pale imitation. The only people believing those kinds of works are the other people dong them.
I still see tutorials as nice help for beginners even if some people would abuse them and use them for copying purposes. In truth, I myself am not too keen on using tutorials, I never even freaking imagined so many people looked at them here, but I know in school, a teacher coming over and showing you how to properly do a contour line, or how to shade more realistically, or whatever, is about the same in some ways. You can either learn from it, or robotically copy that exact technique. One will be better for it and one wont. A lot of people don't actually take classes, can't afford or they do art for a hobby, so they use tuts as their way of learning and I canβt really hate on them for that if itβs their only means, and some people, regardless of how many times you tell them life drawing helps, that you donβt need a lesson plan, that they should just practice, wonβt ever get anywhere on that alone, so itβs a little help.
I personally think you have a very distinctive style, itβs nicely realistic and stylized at the same time, and even if someone were to try and copy it, I just canβt see them doing a good job of it unless they actually stopped and took the effort to learn anatomy and such, in which case theyβd be learning something more then just what they did staring at your work anyhow, which is the equivalent of someone learning from the great masters and such. If they ever surpass you, great, a new awesome artist in the world and you get to be one of their influences, but if all they ever do is keep copying, theyβll forever be boring and fake and I just canβt see that as something to be angered at even if they do manage a certain fame from it. Getting paid to suck just ainβt too cool to me X3 I started rambling about half way through that and now Iβve lost my train of thought so sorry if my reply is random X3!! Itβs my day off damn it!! *enjoys her incoherentness*
