officially designed as a special class for exploring gas giants down to the middle atmosphere of these planets, these ships were equipped with powerful impulse engines and excellent sensors for this task

in fact, the ships served as a test platform for various new construction concepts

With these ships, Starfleet tested these new design features for their spaceships: new alloys for new construction methods of the ship's hull, different deck layouts, sensor arrangements, drive configurations

Therefore, each of these ships is unique internally. For example, the decks of the Crossfield were structured in a box shape (even distribution of all rooms per deck, without a specific center on a deck). The decks of the Discovery were divided into circles (a precisely defined center on each deck around which the rooms are arranged), the Glenn has a spherical deck structure (the bridge is the absolute spatial center, all other rooms of the ship are spherical around the bridge grouped)

the armament, however, originally only consisted of the prescribed minimum armament of two type IV phaser banks and a torpedo launcher

the area of application, the research of gas giants, was selected partly in order to be able to test the ships inconspicuously in extreme situations and environments, but partly also out of the real desire to research in this area

the U.S.S. Crossfield, was unfortunately destroyed in such a test maneuver in the atmosphere of a gas planet, before the outbreak of the "Four Years War"

the U.S.S. Discovery and the U.S.S. Glenn were given a much stronger armament at the beginning of the war, due to their enormous importance in that war

the U.S.S. Glenn was destroyed during the "Battle of Phyria H05U", in the eighteenth month of the war, when a Klingon fleet was waiting for the Glenn at this Tkon outpost, whose location in the atmosphere of this gas planet was already known to the Klingons

the U.S.S. Discovery survived the war and the battles relatively unscathed and fulfilled all expectations of the ship

the Discovery crew was able to find all Tkon outposts that were marked on the star map that the U.S.S. Shenzhou had found shortly before the "Battle of the Binary Stars" began

and mostly before the Klingon forces reached the respective outposts

the design and concept of the U.S.S. Discovery turned out to be so successful that the U.S.S. Excelsior was developed from the U.S.S. Discovery, the U.S.S. Excelsior in turn became the prototype for most ship classes of the 24th century
