intergalactic deep space explorer

Cargo Capacity: various holds, total capacity = 5428672 m³

Specificity:

  • The Aurigia-Class (speaker's note: Aurigia = Navigator in the Covenant dialect of Alteran) is the standard deep-space explorer of the scientific organization Astria Denarlumen (speaker's note: not to be confused with the Antad Denarlux of the Alteran Astria Republic of Itias Antitias, also abbreviated as AD, hence the Astria Denarlumen is usually referred to in non-governmental statements as CAD = Covenant-AD, abbreviated).

  • The Aurigia-Class are research vessels with a standard crew of 2.380 individuals. Additionally, they can accommodate up to 11.900 scientists and mission specialists. In total, during a long-term research expedition, 14.250 individuals can live and work on board.

  • Aurigia-Class ships are equipped with an exceptionally wide range of laboratories and sensor arrays.

  • These include astrophysics/astrometric laboratories, various xenobiology areas including hydroponic gardens, planetary laboratories and several high-security zones that are under constant quarantine to study potentially dangerous research subjects such as single-celled life forms. Approximately 8.000.000 m² of space, spread across 17 decks, is reserved for scientific work. The remaining 17 decks are dedicated to ship operations and the ship's crew.

  • Both the scientific and non-scientific areas are strictly spatially separated from each other, independent of the high-security zones, for safety reasons. For example, there are no crew quarters on the scientific decks, and ship systems are located on the scientific decks only as necessary for the operation of the ship or the scientific facilities, such as life support systems.

  • Critical systems, such as life support, are redundantly available well beyond the standard found on board military units.

  • These ships are also equipped with a wide range of sensor arrays. In addition to the standard sensor systems found on explorers, such as multi-phase short and long-range sensors, active and passive high-resolution EM broadband sensors, they also have sensor equipment that is rarely found on spacecraft. The following is an incomplete list of examples:

  • Several subspace radio telescopes for long-range astronomical observations, with a range of 1000 light-years+, using subspace communication signals.

  • Passive and active space-time structure scanners for analysing space-time using disturbances caused by natural and artificial gravitational waves and hyperspace events (speaker's note: referring to hyperspace windows).

  • Internal and external Quantum Reflection Sensor Arrays, designed to detect matter bridges to parallel realities and universes. Their primary purpose is to prevent the ship from accidentally traveling to parallel realities/universes or to return quickly to its own reality.

  • The propulsion system is, on the one hand, an intergalactic hyperdrive, which is a version of the Tech Con SHEHE 2000 engine, originally developed for the current series of Hammond-class battleships of the IUSP, manufactured under licence by the Covenant.

  • On the other hand, a gravimetric Clerehaet Deilor Ven Tiaer sublight engine. As with civilian ships, the advantages of gravimetric propulsion systems, such as efficiency, versatility and minimum environmental impact, are more important than the disadvantages of such propulsion systems compared to ion engines, such as lower acceleration or maximum speed.

  • Yet, even more impressive than its offensive potential is the Aurigia-Class's defensive capability. Equipped with a Lucidum Adbo defense shield, it possesses one of the most potent shield systems of the Covenant. Only the Lucidum Menad shield system of the city ships of the Cor-Domum-Class surpasses it in strength.

  • The complement of the Aurigia-Class consists of a maximum of fifty shuttles. The actual composition varies depending on the mission. The most common arrangement includes 30 Rehaet Altestoven shuttles and 20 Nesori shuttles. This mixture ensures maximum flexibility by combining the multifunctionality of the purely sublight-capable Rehaet Altestoven shuttles with the independence of the hyperspace-capable Nesori shuttles, which can also be armed with a 140 mm VST-Gun turret.
