<<Now with a recap for those of you who forgot what happened a page ago! DO YOU hate soulless radio commentary? Text in to let us know!!1
And I know it's not the most gripping cliffhanger to end a page on but I wanted to give you some idea of the time it takes Houston to communicate. Go make yourself a cuppa and then get on with reading (when the next page is there).
This seems like a good time to link some old concept art for this page!

Poor Alan's arm! OW!
So many changes in scene. I love the fish eye you used on the police station. REALLY nice yellows and greens in the Leicester household. It looks so warm and snug. Also the utensils are SO much fun.

Yeah, that's going to hurt...
I'm glad you like it! I want to show off the station but it's IMPOSSIBLE to fit it in a panel entirely without losing the focus on characters, so I do what I can. That and I think more intense a scene = more visual distortion. But honestly I just really like fish eye, it's like it makes more sense for my brain somehow.
I knooow, fun utensils are fun (and I can't even remember when was the last time I drew a kitchen, not counting work stuff)!

Nice to see another page! The narration with the radio part is done well. How typical--they talk about something like that, about the man throwing himself in front of the bus--and then say "Hope your morning is better." Typical of media...
I wonder what Houston has to say.

Thank you! I blame the culture of rolling news - every channel out there feels the need to have regular news breaks, but most media is light entertainment so they "balance" heavy news and cheery commentary like that... I don't listen to that sort of radio much but I find it really annoying.
Working on the next page, so you'll find out soon, I hope - and you'd still have to wait 3-5 minutes inside the story!

Good to hear this! And yeah, I couldn't fit everyone in this chapter (for multiple reasons) but it feels good to get more stories going right from the start!

I know I told it already, but man, these people with phones everywhere... Still make me paranoid.
And this radio commentary... I hate popolar Polish commercial radio stations because all they broadcasting is annoying popular music, commercials or stupid broadcast with pathetic jokes. And in official Polish radio is too much politics, of course there are interesting broadcasts too, but I don't like when people talking too much. So, if I want listen to the radio, I chooses stations with oldschool music.
But let's back to main topic!
I love way you draw these English estates. Also love all small details in the kitchen. I even have similar plant in my kitchen.
And nice to see Houston, I haven't seen this boy for a while.
I'm really curios what will happen next!

I used to listen to a very political (but NOT mainstream) radio all the time in the uni but I stopped doing that after my mental health went downhill. I still don't do that, which is a bit of a shame, but I just can't handle rolling news anymore. I do like listening to people talking so I listen to a lot of podcasts and radio shows at home, music is more for walking...
And thank you!! Which one of the two plants?
And I'm already sketching the next page (but I dunno how long it'll take me yet)!

You just made me realize I listen to the music all the time. Also while walking. But in my case it's indispensable, because you know how I love noises and blabbing when I'm outside.
This hanging one.
Yay! But don't worry about it and just work in your own tempo.

Yeah, lately I take headphones with me even if I don't want to listen to anything, just to know I have some barrier between me and whichever noise might happen. I don't need headphones when I'm walking in a wood, SURPRISE SURPRISE. Music is great for anything to do with emotions though, thinking about art and stories or just feeling too sad/angry to do anything. It's a bit of a trick because music is easy to relate to and that's why everyone feels understood when listening to their favourite music but it helps.
Niiice! And yeah, I will!

Duuno about gripping, but it sure did work for me x) cause I went "nooooo! what should he do??" guess I'm gonna be extra nag-y about the next page And I really like the way you've used radio for narration here - it's not a new trick, but it works really well here (and I'm guessing the dj is not a fan of the met
)
(and this is silly but I looked at the fist panel and thought - that's a lot of bald guys in the background x) Also, is that a house shaped tea pot on the microwave??)

Oly-RRR In reply to sn0otchie [2016-09-19 22:14:12 +0000 UTC]
Good!!! I'm hoping to draw it fast-er than usual but it's also that time of month when I have other stuff piling up!
That IS a lot of bald guys in the background! I was thinking how I don't draw bald people that much and I had to something about that! There's a lot of them out there, especially in the summer! Now to add some that aren't background characters (though I'll probably draw this crowd again too, I like how they turned out).
That's a house shaped teapot on top of a dishwasher (after I drew it I remembered that my dishwasher is as tiny as it gets and most of them are larger but it was too late) but yes! I just had a feeling Houston's mum would have one, she has this whole "cosy house from an illustrated book" style going on and I keep worrying I'm not drawing it well enough. We also had a similar teapot, it's still in one piece - well, sort of, the roof fell off and had to be glued together a couple of times before we decided to stop using it, and it leaked from the start, dunno if it is the one we had or it's a generally impractical idea.
But I still like the look of them!!

Aw geez, I'd hate to see what those people are gonna say when they post the videos they're taking on social media. It's gonna be full of outrage and critical comments about something that's taken out of context. They'll be all like "Police beats up guy" when in reality, Alan is keeping the guy from getting himself run over by a bus. I've seen those kinds of posts made about exhausted resident doctors dozing off during the night shift in the hospital.
I like how you added people taking videos of Alan knocking the guy over (will it be spoilery if I mentioned his name?).
I also like the details you added in the kitchen. It's a good kind of crowded - homey, is the word that pops into my head. And Houston, what do you want your dad to do? [I think I have an idea about what Houston wants his dad to do]

Oly-RRR In reply to achattystoryteller [2016-09-19 21:26:48 +0000 UTC]
I'll get there eventually but I think it's no spoiler to say you're thinking in the right direction when it comes to social media... It's really annoying, people make the same remarks about cops, doctors, firemen and forget that they are human and can't spend 10+ hour long shift without food breaks or showing emotions or feeling tired.
Alan's name is no spoiler of course, the ginger guy's name is a bit of a spoiler (mostly because I'm getting last minute doubts about renaming him before it's too late)!
And thank you! This is exactly how I wanted the kitchen to feel, I wasn't sure if it'd get across since it's the kind of kitchen I like but I'm not really used to them irl! And I think you are right with your idea, I need to draw the next page fast!

Why'd you leave us on such a cliff hanger! What is Houston going to say!!! I also agree that toe typing is a skill that I'm amazed by, like people who paint with their feet or months. Do toes have the same amount of sensitivity? If not then that's even harder
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Oly-RRR In reply to Sleyf [2016-09-19 21:11:00 +0000 UTC]
I need to check but I think toes have the same or nearly the same amount of sensitivity, it's just that most people don't use them that much so our brains are not used to controlling them with precision, like writing/drawing with a non-dominant hand. With Houston it's more the case of picking the most controllable limb out of four.
Also Houston doodles and colours colouring books for fun from time to time! I keep meaning to come up with some ARTSY KIDS from his school who are REALLY SERIOUS about it but when Houston does something it's usually "just" because he likes doing it.

Sleyf In reply to Oly-RRR [2016-09-20 12:12:52 +0000 UTC]
You might be right, maybe they are very sensitive...I don't know but I mean they sometimes replace thumbs with toes (it sort of creeps me out as I have this...disgust of toes) - though I'm not sure the toe can feel as much as the natural fingers in that case anyway? I imagined toes were less sensitive only because we walk about on them so if they were the same it might be uncomfortable, but you may be right as a lot of people can pick things up and stuff with their toes, and people use them to paint so it must be a learnable skill.
Houston has more mastery of his limbs than most people then, if he can do that with his toes (a lot of people can't even separate certain toes from the main toe bunch - if that made sense)
Lol I need to see these kids, the Art Crowd. Art should be fun!

Oly-RRR In reply to Sleyf [2016-09-20 16:38:38 +0000 UTC]
In case of replacing thumbs with toes it's more an issue of nerves being damaged, hence less sensitivity. Besides, have you ever walked barefoot outdoors after a long winter season of wearing shoes? It's really uncomfortable for the first hour but you forget about it by the end of the summer and skin on the soles of your feet gets thicker (it also happens with age, summer after summer). If you happened to walk on your hands skin would get thicker there. So a lot about this is a matter of life-long habits, though unfortunately the sort of habits that's really hard to change at an older age.
Nah, that's what I was trying to explain - he doesn't. Oh gosh, it sounds like I'm talking him down and I'm not, I just like being precise... What I mean is that he doesn't type with all his toes, he can't play a piano, he can't pick most things up, he aims with his big toe and hits the touch screen. It's a skill, sure, but it's a very regular skill for him, he uses his body the the extent he can like the rest of us.
Someday! And yeaaah, most people get the artsy phase by the time of college/uni but it's annoying either way. It's hard to explain it, there's loving art and then there's that sort of in-your-face way of doing it.

I have a hard enough time communicating by using my fingers to text. I can't imagine how hard it would be using my toes. So many hilarious toe typos...

To be fair, most people don't use their toes much so it's easier when it becomes a habit, same as drawing with your non-dominant hand. BUT YES, I can barely control texting on my new phone and had word prediction turned off entirely on my old one! Though Houston (and everyone using modern AAC devices to some extent or another) has a lot of mundane repetitive stuff preprogrammed as sentences, that helps.
This felt relevant.

I knooow, I feel the same about it - there are some amazing moments people wouldn't be able to share before and that I love! But then there's also people filming all sorts of violence or pretty much anyone they don't like for some reason, including emergency services doing their job...

So true... I just read a newspaper article about our local fire brigade, who were saying that people filming them on their phones (and commenting, joking about it, or even insulting them while at it) is becoming more and more of a hindrance to their work :/
I don't get it. Next time it could be you needing an emergency transport to a hospital, or your house burning down - wouldn't want anyone hindering the helpers then, would you?
